Study reveals how media representations of animal rights advocacy contribute to its depoliticization

Phys.org

Despite the pervasive public interest in animal welfare, the framing of animal rights activism in the media has largely contributed to its depoliticization, argues a paper in Polity. "Vegans and "Green-Collared Criminals,'" by Serrin Rutledge-Prior, presents the reaction to a day of animal rights protests in cities and towns around Australia in 2019, and ultimately concludes that the public narratives about the activists delegitimized their endeavors.

Soy biodiesel byproduct could enhance 3D printing industry

Phys.org

In a development that could advance the 3D printing industry, researchers at the University of Louisville have discovered a way to transform a significant waste output from soy biodiesel plants into a valuable resource.

How to ensure biodiversity data are FAIR, linked, open and future-proof

Phys.org

Within the Biodiversity Community Integrated Knowledge Library (BiCIKL) project, 14 European institutions from ten countries, spent the last three years elaborating on services and high-tech digital tools, in order to improve the findability, accessibility, interoperability and reusability (FAIR-ness) of various types of data about the world's biodiversity. These types of data include peer-reviewed scientific literature, occurrence records, natural history collections, DNA data and more.

Researchers identify nutrient enrichment driven by canopy rainfall redistribution

Phys.org

Precipitation deeply couples with nutrient cycling through its interactions with atmospheric deposition and canopy interception, which alters its own chemical properties. Throughfall and stemflow carry numerous elements into the soil, not only affecting the structure of soil microbial communities, individual plant survival, and plant community succession, but also regulating ecosystem structure and function. This constitutes a key ecological process that connects the atmosphere, phyllosphere, and rhizosphere.

How pooling solutions can be strengthened in road transport

Phys.org

Less than a hundred kilos of human weight, more than two metric tons of steel: individual road transport is a huge climate killer, and switching to electric vehicles is only part of the solution because manufacturing the vehicles also causes emissions.

Advancing transistor technology with triply-degenerate semimetal PtBi₂

Phys.org

Despite its promising characteristics in condensed matter physics, the triply-degenerate semimetal PtBi2 has been largely unexplored in practical applications, particularly in semiconductor technology. The main difficulties include a lack of empirical data on the integration of PtBi2 with existing semiconductor components and the need for innovative approaches to leverage its unique properties, such as high stability and mobility, within the constraints of current electronic manufacturing processes.

Study explores over a century of temperature trends at Beijing Observatory

Phys.org

In a significant stride towards understanding climate change, a recent study published in the International Journal of Climatology has successfully homogenized and analyzed over a century's worth of daily temperature data from the Beijing Observatory (BO), spanning from 1915 to 2021.

Chainmail catalysts: Carbon-encapsulated FeNi alloys for enhanced oxygen electrocatalysis

Phys.org

Rapid growth in global energy demand has caused massive depletion of traditional fossil fuels and serious environmental problems, and there is no doubt that the development of efficient energy storage and conversion technologies is an essential field of research. Rechargeable Zn-air batteries have attracted great research interest due to their high energy density, low cost, environmental friendliness, and safety.

90% of Floridians believe climate change is happening: Survey

Phys.org

The latest edition of Florida Atlantic University's "Florida Climate Resilience Survey," found that 90% of Floridians believe that climate change is happening. In comparison, a recent Yale University survey showed 72% of all Americans believe climate change is happening. The FAU survey includes questions on beliefs about climate change, experience with extreme weather events and support for climate-related policies.

Research team makes hydroxylamine from air and water

Phys.org

A research team led by Prof. Zeng Jie and Prof Geng Zhigang from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) has proposed a new model for sustainable hydroxylamine (NH2OH) synthesis via a plasma-electrochemical cascade pathway (PECP). They achieved the green and sustainable synthesis of NH2OH from ambient air and water at mild conditions. Their study is published in Nature Sustainability.

Study reveals the dietary practices of the agropastoral communities of the northeast Iberian Peninsula

Phys.org

Raquel Hernando, a Juan de la Cierva researcher associated with the European project TIED2TEETH, at the Centro Nacional de Investigación sobre la Evolución Humana (CENIEH), is the lead author of a paper published in the American Journal of Biological Anthropology, in which the teeth of 84 adult individuals found at eight sites in the northeast Iberian Peninsula were analyzed to offer new perspectives on the diet of these populations in recent prehistory.

Genetic discovery helps Angus producers protect their herds

Phys.org

When an East Texas cattle operation contacted Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service cattle specialists in the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Department of Animal Science after experiencing a rash of neurological, unknown issues with their calves, it started a seven-year search for answers.

Machine learning model uncovers new drug design opportunities

Phys.org

Pathogens are nothing if not adaptable, and their ability to protect themselves against antibiotics increasingly poses a public health concern. A research team led by Los Alamos National Laboratory has used machine learning, an application of artificial intelligence, to identify molecular properties that could guide the discovery of new types of antibiotics, especially among pathogens deemed critical by the World Health Organization due to their high bacterial resistance.

Fine roots make the difference in metabolomes and microbiomes

Phys.org

Bacteria and fungi live together on the surface of plant roots, which can promote symbiotic interactions with the plant. Plant roots that are especially fine can support various niches for their microbial proliferations, but traditionally, microbiome studies have not examined fine root systems separately from the rhizosphere.
