NEW YORK (PIX11) --- Several people felt buildings and homes shook after an earthquake hit the New York City area Friday morning.
The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 4.8, officials said. According to the USGS, the earthquake was recorded in Whitestone, New Jersey.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said the epicenter was near Readington in Hunterdon County.
But the shaking was felt in the five boroughs and throughout the state.
"A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit west of Manhattan and has been felt throughout New York. My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day," Gov. Kathy Hochul posted on X.
