A Missouri panel found that fentanyl deaths among Missouri babies, toddlers and teens spiked as child welfare officials struggled to adequately investigate the cases. Forty-three youth died — 20 of them under the age of 4 — in 2022 alone from the infamously powerful drug. That reflected an overall doubling of child deaths, with the spike among the youngest victims even steeper. The Hamas militant group says it has accepted an Egyptian-Qatari cease-fire proposal to halt the seven-month war with Israel. It issued a statement Monday saying its supreme leader, Ismail Haniyeh, had delivered the news in a phone call with Qatar’s prime minister and Egypt’s intelligence minister. There was no immediate comment from Israel. A powerful ethnic armed group battling Myanmar's army in the country's west claims it took hundreds of government soldiers prisoner when it captured a major command post. The Arakan Army is the well-armed military wing of the Rakhine ethnic minority movement and it has been attacking army outposts in the western state of Rakhine for about six months. President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke Monday morning a White House official and National Security Council spokesperson said, as Israel appeared closer to launching an offensive on the southern Gaza city of Rafah. That move is staunchly opposed by the U.S. on humanitarian grounds. A building that was under construction has collapsed in South Africa, with authorities saying there are multiple injuries. Local media reported at least 59 people are trapped under the rubble after Monday's collapse, while 10 others have been rescued. They say five people sustained serious injuries. The building collapsed in the coastal city of George, about 250 miles east of Cape Town. The George Municipality said in a statement that its disaster management services, ambulances and police are responding to the collapse.

Forecasters say millions of people in the central United States could see powerful storms Monday including long-track tornadoes, hurricane-force winds and baseball-sized hail. The National Weather Service forecast that much of Oklahoma and parts of Kansas are at the greatest risk of severe weather. Some of those areas in Oklahoma are still recovering from tornadoes. For the first time, researchers have identified a genetic form of late-in-life Alzheimer's disease. Most cases of the mind-robbing disease occur after age 65. A gene called APOE4 has long been considered a key risk factor. But new research says if people inherit two copies of that gene it's not just a risk — it appears to be the underlying cause. Minnesota Democrats have introduced far-reaching legislation that would add abortion and LGBTQ rights to the state’s constitution. If approved by lawmakers this session and then voters on the 2026 ballot, it would be much harder for future lawmakers to repeal those rights in the future.
