«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The summer performance lineup at the amphitheater on Manhattan's Little Island park will open June 6 with Twyla Tharp’s “How Long Blues.” It's the choreographer’s first full-length work in a decade. Little Island is built atop the Hudson River on a series of tulip-shaped concrete columns. Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo will sing all the major roles in a 90-minute remix of Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro,” running from Aug. 30 to Sept. 22. The works are part of a summer schedule that includes nine world premieres. Читать дальше...

Children are dying of fentanyl by the dozens in Missouri. A panel is calling for changes

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

A Missouri panel found that fentanyl deaths among Missouri babies, toddlers and teens spiked as child welfare officials struggled to adequately investigate the cases. Forty-three youth died — 20 of them under the age of 4 — in 2022 alone from the infamously powerful drug. That reflected an overall doubling of child deaths, with the spike among the youngest victims even steeper. The Missouri Department of Social Services convened the panel of social workers, health officials, law enforcement and child advocates. Читать дальше...

The Latest | Hamas says it agreed to a Gaza cease-fire deal, no comment yet from Israel

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The Hamas militant group says it has accepted an Egyptian-Qatari cease-fire proposal to halt the seven-month war with Israel. It issued a statement Monday saying its supreme leader, Ismail Haniyeh, had delivered the news in a phone call with Qatar’s prime minister and Egypt’s intelligence minister. There was no immediate comment from Israel. The announcement came hours after Israel’s military said it ordered some 100,000 people to evacuate the southern Gaza city of Rafah, signaling that a long-promised ground invasion could be imminent. After stalling in 2023, a bill to define antisemitism in state law is advancing in Georgia

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

A bill to define antisemitism in Georgia law stalled in 2023 over how the measure should be worded. But now it's moving ahead, backed by a heavy Republican push to support Israel in its war with Hamas and Jewish Georgians reporting a surge in bias incidents. The Senate Judiciary Committee voted unanimously for the measure Monday. But fears of opponents who say the bill will be used to block criticism of Israeli war crimes against Palestinians are stronger than ever. Some protesters chanting “Free... Читать дальше...

The UN says there's 'full-blown famine' in northern Gaza. What does that mean?

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The head of the United Nations World Food Program says northern Gaza has entered “full-blown famine” after nearly seven months of war between Israel and Hamas. But a formal famine declaration faces the complications of politics and of confirming how many people have died. A WFP spokesman tells The Associated Press that one of the three benchmarks for a formal famine declaration has already been met in northern Gaza and another is nearly met — important details on how far the effort to document deadly hunger has progressed. Powerful ethnic armed group in western Myanmar claims to capture base and hundreds of soldiers

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

A powerful ethnic armed group battling Myanmar's army in the country's west claims it took hundreds of government soldiers prisoner when it captured a major command post. The Arakan Army is the well-armed military wing of the Rakhine ethnic minority movement and it has been attacking army outposts in the western state of Rakhine for about six months. The group said in a video statement posted on social media Monday that soldiers belonging to the Operational Command No. 15 headquarters in Rakhine’s Buthidaung township surrendered after a siege. The judge in Donald Trump's hush money trial has sanctioned him for again violating his gag order. The judge fined the former president $1,000 on Monday and warned that future violations could result in jail time. Witness testimony resumed thereafter, setting the stage for an even deeper dive into the events and people involved in what prosecutors say was a scheme to influence the 2016 presidential election by buying and burying negative stories about Trump. The trial is in its 12th day. Trump is... Читать дальше...

Biden speaks with Netanyahu as Israelis appear closer to Rafah offensive

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke Monday morning a White House official and National Security Council spokesperson said, as Israel appeared closer to launching an offensive on the southern Gaza city of Rafah. That move is staunchly opposed by the U.S. on humanitarian grounds. A National Security Council spokesperson says Biden reiterated U.S. concerns about an invasion of Rafah and said he believes reaching a cease-fire with Hamas is the best way to protect the lives of Israeli hostages held in Gaza. Human remains were found at a former Hitler base, but decay prevents determining the cause of death

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

A spokesman says Polish prosecutors have discontinued an investigation into several human skeletons found at a site where German dictator Adolf Hitler and other Nazi leaders spent time during World War II because the advanced state of decay made it impossible to determine the cause of death. The remains were found Feb. 24 at Wolf’s Lair, which served as Hitler’s chief headquarters from 1941-44 when the area was part of Germany. The compound of about 200 Nazi bunkers and military barracks hidden in... Читать дальше...

The National Weather Service forecast that much of Oklahoma and parts of Kansas are at the greatest risk of severe weather. Some of those areas in Oklahoma are still recovering from tornadoes. The forecast follows severe flooding in Houston early Monday morning.

Independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders is running for re-election. The 82-year-old from Vermont announced Monday that he's seeking his fourth term in the U.S. Senate. He says in a video announcement that American democracy is in question, and the 2024 election in many ways will be the most consequential in our lifetime. The liberal senator served 16 years as a Democratic congressman before his election to the Sente.

A subset of Alzheimer's cases may be caused by two copies of a single gene, new research shows

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

For the first time, researchers have identified a genetic form of late-in-life Alzheimer's disease. Most cases of the mind-robbing disease occur after age 65. A gene called APOE4 has long been considered a key risk factor. But new research says if people inherit two copies of that gene it's not just a risk — it appears to be the underlying cause. About 15% of Alzheimer's patients are thought to carry the gene pair. Scientists say the distinction could have implications for both research and treatment. Читать дальше...

Starbucks founder Schultz says company needs to refocus on coffee as sales struggle

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Former Starbucks CEO and founder Howard Schultz says the company’s leaders should spend more time in stores and focus on coffee drinks as they work to turn around flagging sales. In a LinkedIn post published over the weekend, Schultz said many people had reached out to him after Starbucks reported weaker-than-expected quarterly sales and earnings last week. Starbucks says it's seeing slower traffic around the world as U.S. and Chinese customers pull back on spending. It's also facing boycotts in some markets for its perceived support of Israel.

Book Review: Memoirist Lilly Dancyger’s penetrating essays explore the power of female friendships

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

In 2021 Lilly Dancyger’s first book, “Negative Space,” was praised for its unflinching portrait of her father’s heroin addiction. In a new essay collection, “First Love,” Dancyger grapples with the murder of a beloved cousin, using it as a springboard to honor the female friends who in that instance and others, gave her unconditional love. Though most of the essays are grounded in the quirky details of specific relationships, she often expands her focus to critically examine the way girls and women are portrayed in the media. Stock market today: Wall Street opens higher, adding to last week's gains

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

U.S. stocks are ticking higher as last week’s rush of market-moving events gives way to what could be a quieter week. The S&P 500 was up 0.5% early Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 164 points, and the Nasdaq composite was up 0.5%. Berkshire Hathaway rose after Warren Buffett’s company reported its latest results over the weekend. This week will bring speeches from several Federal Reserve officials, a preliminary report on consumer sentiment, and earnings reports from The Walt Disney Co. Читать дальше...

For farmers, watching and waiting is a spring planting ritual. Climate change is adding to anxiety

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

As climate change drives an increase in spring rains across the Midwest, it can mean more anxiety for farmers eager to carry out the ritual of spring planting. In Ohio, for example, farmers have lost about five days of field work in the month of April since 1995. When farmers have to wait for fields to dry out, planting days can become endurance tests that stretch into the night. Delays in planting can affect yield if they are significant enough, and the quality of crops planted in wet springs may suffer at harvest, too.

Minnesota legislators consider constitutional amendment to protect abortion and LGBTQ rights

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Minnesota Democrats have introduced far-reaching legislation that would add abortion and LGBTQ rights to the state’s constitution. If approved by lawmakers this session and then voters on the 2026 ballot, it would be much harder for future lawmakers to repeal those rights in the future. The Minnesota Equal Rights Amendment is set to have its first legislative hearing Monday. Opponents say the proposal is overreaching and divisive. It would be among the broadest protections of abortion and LGBTQ rights in the nation. Читать дальше...

Nigerian journalist's arrest last week triggers criticism of worsening press freedoms

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

A Nigerian journalist’s arrest last week has triggered criticism of worsening press freedoms in the West African country. Daniel Ojukwu with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism went missing last Wednesday in the economic hub of Lagos. His family and employer found out on Friday that he was detained and held in a police station for allegedly violating the country’s Cybercrime Act, often criticized as a tool for censorship. «SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Journalists at Italy’s state-run RAI are on strike to protest budget streamlining and what they say is an increasingly repressive atmosphere in Italy for media. The 24-hour RAI strike Monday is the latest protest by Italian journalists against what they say are threats to freedom of the press and expression in Italy. The threats include criminal investigations of journalists and suspected episodes of censorship. The strike came just days after media watchdog group Reporters Without Borders downgraded...
