A third miner is declared dead in a cave-in in southern Poland

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Rescuers in southern Poland have recovered the body of a third miner a day after a cave-in in which 12 other workers were hurt. A spokesperson for the Polish Mining Group says the miner was declared dead Wednesday and the rescue operation finished as investigators look into the cause of the collapse. It was the second cave-in at the Myslowice-Wesola mine this year, following one on April 17 that killed one miner. Two other coal mine workers were killed in accidents inside other mines in Poland this year... Читать дальше...

A Dutch anti-Islam party is on the verge of forming the EU's latest hard-right government

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Anti-Islam firebrand Geert Wilders is on the verge of brokering a four-party coalition in the Netherlands six months after coming in first in national elections, opening the prospect that yet another European Union nation will veer toward the hard right weeks ahead of EU-wide elections. Wilders has said he does not expect to become prime minister himself, because he remains too extreme for his coalition partners, but his Party for Freedom would be the driving force in a four-party coalition. With... Читать дальше...

The Latest | Palestinians mark 76 years of their dispossession as more catastrophe looms in Gaza

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Palestinians are marking 76 years of dispossession, commemorating their mass expulsion from what is today Israel as a potentially even larger catastrophe unfolds in Gaza. The United Nations says more than half a million of people have been displaced in recent days by fighting there. Israel is pressing its military operations in Rafah, along Gaza’s southern border with Egypt, and in northern Gaza, where Hamas has regrouped. No food has entered the two main border crossings in southern Gaza for the past week. Читать дальше...

Indonesia seeds clouds to block rainfall after floods killed at least 58 people while 35 are missing

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Indonesian authorities have seeded clouds in a bid to prevent further rainfall after flash floods that hit the country's Sumatra Island over the weekend left at least 58 people dead. Another 35 are missing. A landslide of mud and cold lava from Mount Marapi, triggered by the monsoon rains, caused rivers to breach their banks. The deluge tore through mountainside villages in four districts in West Sumatra province just before midnight on Saturday. The floods swept away people and 79 homes and submerged hundreds of houses and buildings... Читать дальше...

India's parliament has fewer Muslims as strength of Modi's party grows

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The political power of Muslims is declining in the world's largest democracy. Tensions between Hindus and Muslims in India are not new, but they have gotten worse under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His ruling Bharatiya Janata Party touts a Hindu-nationalist ideology and is on the cusp of delivering him a third five-year term. As the BJP becomes more powerful — this year’s vote will be decided in June — the proportion of Muslim lawmakers in parliament and state legislatures is shrinking. One political... Morocco’s automotive industry shifts gears to prep for electric vehicle era

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Morocco has grown its automotive industry from virtually non-existent to Africa’s largest in less than two decades. The North African kingdom supplies more cars to Europe than China, India or Japan, and has the capacity to produce 700,000 vehicles a year. Moroccan officials are determined to maintain the country’s role as a car-making juggernaut by competing for electric vehicle projects. But whether one of Africa’s few industrialization success stories can stay competitive as worldwide auto production... Читать дальше...

South Africa braces for what may be a milestone election. Here is a guide to the main players

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

After 30 years of dominating South African politics, the ruling African National Congress will face its toughest election this month as most opinion polls predict it will lose its parliamentary majority for the first time. Once admired under the leadership of Nelson Mandela, and regarded as a beacon of hope by the Black majority following the fall of apartheid in 1994, the ANC’s reputation has been battered by record levels of unemployment, widespread poverty, the collapse of some government services and corruption scandals. An Arizona judge helped revive an 1864 abortion law. His lawmaker wife joined Democrats to repeal it

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Arizona Supreme Court Justice Clint Bolick sided with the majority in restoring an 1864 ban on nearly all abortions. Republican state Sen. Shawnna Bolick joined Democrats to repeal the ban a few weeks later. The marked split between the husband and wife adds to an increasingly confusing and chaotic legal and philosophical landscape surrounding abortion access in Arizona. And it could spell trouble for them during an election year, when both of them will be on the ballot. The Bolicks' conservative credentials are strong... Читать дальше...

Latest US inflation report may provide clues to future path of prices and interest rates

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

It’s perhaps the biggest question swirling around the U.S. economy right now: Is inflation stuck at an elevated level — or will last year’s steady decline resume sometime soon? On Wednesday, the government will issue the latest monthly inflation report, a set of figures that will be scrutinized by economists, Wall Street traders and Federal Reserve officials for any insight into that question. Analysts estimate that year-over-year inflation dipped from 3.5% in March to 3.4% in April. Measured from March to April... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

A court in Germany has ruled that one of the best-known figures in the far-right Alternative for Germany party knowingly used a Nazi slogan in a speech and ordered him to pay a fine. The verdict in Björn Höcke’s trial comes months before a regional election in the eastern state of Thuringia in which he plans to run for the governor’s job. The state court in the eastern city of Halle convicted Höcke of using symbols of a former Nazi organization. It imposed a fine totaling 13,000 euros (about $14,000).

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Singapore’s deputy leader Lawrence Wong is set to be sworn in as the nation’s fourth prime minister in a carefully planned political succession to ensure continuity and stability in the Asian financial hub. A U.S.-trained economist, Wong succeeds Lee Hsien Loong who stepped down after two decades at the helm. Lee’s resignation marked the end of a family dynasty led by his father Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s first leader who built the colonial trading outpost into one of the world's richest nations during 31 years in office. The news, conveyed via a Walmart staff memo provided to The Associated Press, said the relocations will serve the goal of “bringing more of us together more often." The memo likewise... Authorities in Mexico say 11 people have been killed by shootings in a small town in the southern of Chiapas. In confirming the deaths, the state prosecutors' office said the shootings occurred Tuesday in the township of Chicomuselo, which is in an area known as a trafficking route for migrant and drug smuggling that has been hit by cartel turf battles in recent months. The town is in a sparsely populated area near Mexico's border with Guatemala. There have been confrontations between drug cartels in the area as recently as Monday... Читать дальше...

The presidential primary may be decided, but election season marches on. Voters in several states, including Maryland and West Virginia, chose nominees on Tuesday in critical races that could decide the balance of power on Capitol Hill next year. Maryland’s former Republican governor, Larry Hogan, easily won his party’s nomination for the U.S. Senate seat opened by Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin’s retirement. West Virginia Gov.
