Jewish food is hard to get in Hawai‘i, especially during Passover. It’s hard to find a can of macaroons, or a bottle of kosher-for-Passover wine, or even a box of matzo. There’s a reason that the charity cookbook put out by my shul—Sof Ma’arav, a Conservative congregation of about 60 families in Honolulu—is called The When You Live in Hawai‘i You Get Very Creative During Passover Cookbook.

When I first perused the unpublished manuscript for Fania Lewando’s 1938 cookbook Vegetarish-Dietisher Kokhbukh—before Schocken Books published the English edition titled The Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook in 2015—I was struck by the beauty of its mouthwatering illustrations and the wide range of its vegetarian recipes. It was truly a piece of Jewish culinary history that must be told and shared.

At the New York State GOP gala on April 14, celebrity rabbi Shmuley Boteach tweeted out a couple photos of himself with Donald Trump. In one of them, Boteach checks his schedule to see if he has the time to serve as Trump’s vice president over the next four years. Though Gitler’s gallery has hosted 22 exhibitions to date, its current display, called “The 4 Sons,” is its first Jewish-themed one. It’s dedicated, of course, to Passover.
