A couple was arrested on charges they attacked a legally blind Salvation Army bell ringer who, police say, they accused of cutting in front of the line at a White Plains, N.Y., restaurant.

In 1988 a Colorado man was convicted of raping a woman. The victim, according to the Associated Press, had been out drinking the night in August 1987 when she was attacked. When she reported the assault to police, she initially named a different man as her attacker (who would later say that he had sex with her that night). It’s Dec. 23, which means we’re smack dab in the middle of the time of year when families across the country come together to celebrate Christmas. Or Hanukkah. Or Festivus. Or they have no religious affiliations but are grateful for the extra days off and the post-Christmas Nordstrom sales.  

A white Jacksonville, Fla., woman faces five years in prison after pleading guilty to lying to a federal officer about whether she'd placed an image of a Confederate flag on a black co-worker's desk.  

On Monday, 57-year-old Barbara Dawson went to the Liberty Calhoun Hospital in Tallahassee, Fla., because she was having trouble breathing. She was checked by a doctor who found that she was fine and could be discharged. But Dawson didn't feel better, so she refused to leave. Police were called, and Dawson was handcuffed and escorted from the building. She collapsed on the way out and later died.

In a world where people are taking to the streets, saying “Black lives matter”—where TV shows and films like Empire, Selma, Jane the Virgin, Straight Outta Compton, Fresh Off the Boat and Black-ish are getting high ratings and winning awards—one movie studio allegedly said no to all that diversity and instead chose to take us back to a “simpler” time when all your intimate black and brown dramas were instead predominantly white, bland vehicles for stars like Keanu Reeves.

Like Star Wars, some movie releases are bigger than the actual film. They are touchstones. They are communal experiences. They are I-remember-exactly-where-I-was moments. And the opening night of the film Waiting to Exhale was exactly that. I can vividly remember, 20 years ago this week, rounding up my friends to hit the theater early because we knew it would be packed—or sold out.

Havana: If President Barack Obama comes here sometime next year, as he has hinted he will, he’ll be under great pressure to meet with Cubans who are widely seen in anti-Castro circles within the United States as the legitimate voices of dissent inside this communist nation.
