On June 9, five people were wounded when a Turkish combat drone targeted a warehouse of the Community Protection Units, a security branch of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), in northeastern Syria.
The warehouse in question is located in in the eastern part of the town of al-Qamishli in the northern countryside of al-Hasakah. Footage from the scene of the strike showed some damage at a number of vehicles which were parked near the warehouse.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, this was the 31st Turkish drone strike to target SDF-held areas in northern and northeastern Syria this year.
The strike came amid preparations by the Turkish military and its proxies to launch an operation against the SDF with the aim of establishing a 30-kilometer safe zone. The Turkish media said on June 8 that the operation could start within 72 hours.
The SDF has been preparing to face a new Turkish invasion. The Syrian Arab Army, who maintains positions in the group’s areas of influence, has been also making preparation for a possible confrontation with the Turkish military and its proxies.
In a recent interview with RT, President Bashar al-Assad said that the Turkish military and its proxies will be met with “popular” and “official” resistance if they launched a new invasion into Syria.
