The Golf Weather Gods shined upon beautiful Winghaven Country Club in the early morning
storms on Wednesday, May 18th, to provide just enough moisture to provide excellent playing
conditions for this year’s Roy Wilson District Challenge. Twenty teams teed it up for this year’s
event for some great competition, playing at about 6200 yards.
The Professionals played a scratch Stableford method in their competition. Old Hickory’s new
Head Pro, Kyle Williams, squeezed out the championship, scoring 46 points. Algonquin’s Brett
Moomey and Quincy’s Jon Roberson, were close behind at 45 points, with Moomey winning
the scorecard playoff to finish second and Roberson third.
In the Superintendent Division, the competitors played a Net Stableford competition, based on
80% of their playing handicap. Bellerive’s Nick White won his second Superintendent’s
Competition, scoring 40 points, just beating Norwood Hills’ Mike Null and our host
Superintendent Brent Rockwell, each coring 39 points, with Null winning the scorecard playoff
to finish second and Rockwell third.
In the Team Competition, the Bellerive team captured their third consecutive Challenge
Championship. This year’s team consisted of Head Professional JD Auping, Superintendent
Nick White, District Rep and former District President Andy Frost, and Jim Sullivan. The team
shot a two best ball (net) score of 130.
Three teams were three strokes back at 133. As advertised for this event, the places are
determined by using the USGA formula of breaking ties, which is comparing last 9 hole scores,
then if tied comparing last 6 holes, then if tied comparing last 3 holes, then if tied comparing
last 1 hole. In an unprecedented event, both Old Hickory’s team of Pro Kyle Williams,
Superintendent Dave Pini, District Rep and past District President John Ricci, and Gary Hill,
had identical scores on the back nine with Norwood’s team of Pro Jason Marciniec,
Superintendent Mike Null, District Rep Mike Hartman and Chris Terry. Both teams shot 65 on
the back. As a result, we paid both teams for a second place finish.
The Quincy team, consisting of Pro Jon Roberson, Superintendent Tim Salazar, District Rep
Randy McFarland, and Eric Terwelp, shot 66 on the back, finishing just out of the money.

the entire Winghaven staff for hosting this year’s event, The appetizers following play were
