Dvorak: Jews and Christians are shining a light in the darkness

Calgary Herald

By Petula Dvorak “Lighting a candle in the darkness, that is something that stands on its own,” Rabbi Jack Moline told me, just as that early winter night was closing in and the Christmas lights around us began twinkling. It’s a powerful image, a strong metaphor for both Christians and Jews. The start of Hanukkah […]

Mitchell: Refugees are determined to build better lives

Calgary Herald

By David Mitchell I’ll always remember 2016 as the year I was welcomed to Calgary by refugees. As a new employee of Bow Valley College, seeking to experience the institution’s mission first hand, I sat in on a class of English language learners. The 20 students — ranging in age from teens to senior citizens — were […]

Pentland: Plenty to ponder at Christmas

Calgary Herald

By John Pentland If there is one word that sums up Christmas for me, it is the word ponder.  The word ponder is within the concluding phrase of Luke’s account of the birth story of Jesus. “Mary, treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart.” Ponder. It means to contemplate, or to consider […]

Discovering the Miracle of Spring in New Zealand

Calgary Herald

Life is full of little miracles and travel is one of them. “We have a tradition on our bicycle tours,” explained Ann Anderson partway through our vineyard tour of New Zealand’s Brancott Estates Winery. “Choose your row and we’ll have a race.” Perhaps it’s the fact that I’m not very competitive, but as I leisurely […]

Milke: Our chilly winter wonderland has been the inspiration for pensive poets

Calgary Herald

As Canadians ease into the Christmas holidays, and perhaps while dreading the next Arctic blast, it will be tempting to daydream about warmer climates. For sanity’s sake — winter just started, after all — best to put off California dreaming until February. In the interim, better to delight in the white wonderland which poets ponder, […]

Bill Brooks: Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre Christmas reception

Calgary Herald

There’s no doubt 2016 has proved challenging for the not-for-profit sector. So Santa, what I would like under the tree this year is a […]

Bill Brooks: Here's to the ladies who lunch

Calgary Herald

One of your faithful social scribe’s favourite events of the Christmas season is the Children’s Hospital Aid Society (CHAS) Annual Holiday Luncheon. Sure, it’s great to be one of a handful of guys amongst hundreds of appreciative ladies,  but it’s the charitable work the incredible CHAS ladies do that really resonates. Since 1908, CHAS has […]

Eric Francis: Things turning around for Flames captain

Calgary Herald

With Joy to the World blaring in the dressing room and the captain wearing the policemen’s cowboy hat as the team’s hero, it appeared things finally seemed to turn around for Mark Giordano. But don’t tell him that. While his stats are significantly down, the first star in Friday’s 4-1 win over Vancouver is of […]

Flames go into Christmas break with comfortable win

Calgary Herald

It had been so easy to turn on cruise-control. With the final National Hockey League game before the Christmas break, flights booked, and both teams ready to chow down on turkey dinners, the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks could have mailed this one in. Didn’t happen. At least, as far as the Flames and Canucks […]
