Bank’s severance deal requires IT workers to be on call for two years

Computerworld

SunTrust Banks in Atlanta is laying off about 100 IT workers as it moves work offshore. But this layoff is unusual for what it is asking of the soon-to-be displaced workers: The bank's severance agreement requires terminated employees to remain available for two years to provide help if needed, including in-person assistance, and to do so without compensation.

Feds to require drone registration

Computerworld

Hobbyists and companies alike are trying out drones for fun and commercial purposes, and as the sky starts to get crowded there is a growing cry to regulate the remote-controlled aircraft. The U.S. Dept. of Transportation on Monday said it would form a task force that will come up with a registration process for drones by Nov. 20.

IDG Contributor Network: IT departments must transform in the face of the cloud revolution

Computerworld

During the week of October 5th I had an opportunity to attend the AWS re:Invent 2015 conference in Las Vegas, of all places. As someone who has built an entire career on putting together custom application server software, I should be the last one to get excited about server-less applications. Just like Salesforce’s “no software,” Amazon’s “server-less software” mantra is about a world where application development is not limited by IT, software to install and servers to manage.

Why you shouldn’t trust cloud service providers

Computerworld

Simply stated, you can’t trust the employees of cloud service providers. Frankly, I don’t think we can really trust our own employees anymore either, but at least our capability to monitor them is far greater. Early on we had warnings of the problem of just anyone having access to secure data when Google Engineers got caught stalking Google customers through their access. Their getting caught and our finding out about it was pretty remote. I’ve seen, over the years, crimes ranging from theft... Читать дальше...

FireEye shows that even security products can have security holes

Computerworld

A zero-day vulnerability in the popular FireEye security appliance was in the news several weeks ago, but it’s still worth discussing. That’s because some people in the security community were outraged that a security product could have an exploitable vulnerability. But why should products from security vendors be any different from other products? Because security vendors should know better? Please don’t tell me you’re going to trust your security career to that naive notion.

Stoner high school kid claims to have hacked CIA Director's email account

Computerworld

The CIA Director had an AOL account where he allegedly stored highly sensitive information of his own, of other top American intelligence officials and of the CIA’s. The personal account came to light after a hacker took it over and started leaking screenshots. The same hacker doxed Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and leaked call logs of White House Deputy National Security Advisor Avril Haines.

Now we know why IT support hate Macs

Computerworld

You can’t blame them I suppose. They don’t really know any better, but the latest IBM report is attracting attention because, well, it pretty much tells any open-minded person that Macs are a better deal, even in the enterprise.

Google sweetens enterprise Apps deal

Computerworld

Google has been working hard to pitch its Apps productivity suite to the enterprise, but has come across a consistent snag: Companies are signed up for long-term volume licensing contracts with its competitors, especially Microsoft. Google has found that those companies came calling to look at switching to Apps when their contracts were up for renewal, but were otherwise locked up.
