US labor market recovery unsteady as mass layoffs loom

Tens of thousands more people are facing unemployment in the US, as airlines and other companies announce a new wave of layoffs. The labor market recovery appears to be stalling, as emergency government support runs out. Elizabeth Crofoot - senior economist at The Conference Board - says it's a sign that more jobs could be cut in the weeks and months to come.



US repatriates dozens of IS 'foreign fighters'

The US Justice Department said Thursday that it brought home 27 Americans who went to Syria and Iraq to join the Islamic State group, as Washington again urged other nations to do the same. A day after filing charges against a Trinidadian-American father and son who enlisted in the Islamic State in 2015, the department said it had brought criminal terrorism support cases against some of those returning Americans. Exclusive: 'We would not accept US drone strikes inside Kenya,' warns President Kenyatta

In an exclusive interview with FRANCE 24 while on an official visit to France, Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta discussed the main challenges facing him. Asked about the fight against terror, the Kenyan leader denied reports that the US military has sought authorisation to carry out drone strikes inside Kenya. He stressed that if such a request were made, he would refuse it. Kenyatta also addressed the Covid-19 pandemic, Kenya's economic development, as well as a bid to dissolve parliament because of a lack of gender equality.

Paris could face new Covid-19 restrictions from Monday, health minister says

The French government could place Paris on maximum alert as soon as Monday amid a rise in Covid-19 infections, Health Minister Olivier Véran said Thursday, a move that would likely force the closure of restaurants and bars, and tighten other restrictions on public life. France reported nearly 14,000 new confirmed coronavirus infections over the past 24 hours, close to the record levels seen last week.

Navalny 'not afraid' to return to Russia, after suspected poison attack

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny told a German magazine that Russia's President Vladimir Putin was behind his suspected poisoning and stressed that he was not afraid. Navalny was flown from Russia to Berlin in August after falling ill on a domestic flight. He received treatment in the Charite hospital for what Germany said was poisoning by a potentially deadly nerve agent before being discharged in September. The Kremlin has denied any involvement.

Israel and Lebanon agree to talks on ending border dispute

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to hold border talks, despite both countries being officially still at war. The US will mediate the talks, due to commence after the Jewish holiday of sukkot ends on October 9. The talks will cover land and maritime disputes. Italian football hit again by coronavirus with Genoa-Torino postponed

Italy's football league has again been hit by coronavirus with Saturday's Serie A game between Genoa and Torino postponed after 15 positive tests at the Ligurian club. The third-round match is the first in Serie A to be postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic since the championship started on September 19. A meeting of the Extraordinary Council of the Lega Serie A confirmed the application of UEFA rules whereby a match can only take place as long as a side have 13 healthy players, including a goalkeeper. NFL moves Titans-Steelers later in season after more positives

The NFL has rescheduled the Tennessee Titans' game against Pittsburgh to later in the season after two more positive coronavirus cases Thursday among the Titans, the league announced. The game, originally set for Sunday in Nashville, is the first NFL contest postponed due to the pandemic that wiped out all pre-season games. The league had said Wednesday the game would not be played until at least Monday or Tuesday after Titans players and staff personnel had tested positive for coronavirus earlier in the week.
