France24.com (en)

The Dutch government on Saturday suspended plans to help beleaguered national carrier KLM with a multi-billion-euro bailout package after unions declined to sign a deal involving a five-year pay-cut plan. The move puts the future of the Dutch arm of Air France-KLM into jeopardy, which said it would not remain afloat without a massive government injection to save KLM, the world's oldest airline hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. "The planned state aid is not going through. It's disappointing... Читать дальше...

Hamilton respects Bottas doing 'talking on the track'

France24.com (en)

Lewis Hamilton heaped praise on his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas on Saturday after the Finn had beaten him to pole position for Sunday's Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. The six-time world champion, who was seeking to extend his record number of poles to 98, was outpaced in the final seconds of a tight session, reversing the roles they had played a week earlier in Portugal. Asked about the quality of Bottas as a racing team-mate, Hamilton said his result on Saturday spoke for itself. "I don't really need to say much more," said Hamilton. Читать дальше...

Albon complains about track limits after crossing the line in qualifying

France24.com (en)

A frustrated Alex Albon advised officials to "just put some gravel down" to define track limits after having eight laps deleted at Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix practice and qualifying on Saturday. In a topsy-turvy qualifying session, the under-pressure London-born Thai driver grabbed sixth place on the grid with a last-gasp lap on soft tyres after his first run on mediums was disallowed. "Honestly, I don't know why we're changing different corners and different track limits," said Albon, when asked about his problems. Читать дальше...

France24.com (en)

Police stepped in Saturday to shield health workers gathered in Bern to demand better working conditions, after protesters against fresh virus restrictions tried to disrupt their demonstration. Around 1,000 health care professionals gathered in the Swiss capital Saturday afternoon to cap off a week of protests across the country demanding better pay and other conditions amid the pandemic. But their authorised and peaceful protest was briefly disrupted by around 100 people taking part in an unauthorised... Читать дальше...

Arizona: Could shifting demographics turn a solid red state blue?

France24.com (en)

Once a solid Republican stronghold, Arizona is now up for grabs. This is due in part to changing demographics with an influx of new residents from more liberal states like California. But there's also a massive backlash against President Donald Trump from white suburban women and especially young Latinos of voting age. They're fired up and mobilised against the president's harsh immigration policies. Our reporters went to the border with Mexico to see how the construction of Donald Trump’s promised wall is moving along.

Iraqi authorities reopened Baghdad's Tahrir Square and Al-Jumhuriyah bridge on Saturday, symbolically ending more than a year of demonstrations in epicentres of an anti-government protest movement. Protester tents have been dismantled at the Tahrir roundabout, now again circled by cars, and the towering concrete walls used to close off the Al-Jumhuriyah bridge across the Tigris River have been removed. Tahrir Square and its massive Freedom Monument was at the heart of the movement that brought... Читать дальше...

Nebraska: Life as a Democrat in the 'reddest' corner of America

France24.com (en)

In the third in our series of reports on America's forgotten voters, we are in Nebraska's third congressional district where Donald Trump won 74 percent of the vote in 2016, making it one of the "reddest" parts of the country. For the region's few Democrats, merely expressing their political views can be daring.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is considering imposing a new lockdown across England within days following warnings his localised restrictions strategy has failed to curb soaring coronavirus rates, reports said Saturday. Johnson is expected to announce on Monday the stringent new rules closing all but "essential" stores, while keeping schools, colleges and universities open, The Times said. The measures could come into effect as early as Wednesday and last until December 1, though no final decisions have yet been reached, it added. Читать дальше...

America votes, Europe awaits: How will the US election impact Europe?

France24.com (en)

Europeans may be preoccupied by their own troubles at home – but many minds are also focused on events across the Atlantic, with the US presidential election approaching on November 3. The result will have direct consequences in Europe: will there be four more years of Donald Trump, who's described the European Union as a foe and launched a determined trade war with the bloc? Or a new path with Joe Biden? And what impact will the election have on the course of Brexit and the UK's new relationship with the EU? Читать дальше...

Tens of thousands of revellers joined a gay pride rally through the streets of Taiwan's capital on Saturday in a colourful celebration of equality made possible by the island's successful vanquishing of the coronavirus. Palestinian marks shoes Trump and Macron in stamp of disapproval

France24.com (en)

Palestinian shoemaker Imad Mohammad makes handcrafted footwear with a difference: they are stamped with the names of the US and French presidents in Arabic calligraphy to show his disapproval of them. "Shoes touch the ground, dust and dirt. So if we write someone's name on them and that also gets dirty, then it shows... how you value that person," Mohammad told AFP. He said he chose to stamp the name of US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron on the shoes he crafts because they "assaulted our people". Читать дальше...
