Initial estimates put the hard-left veteran Jean-Luc Melenchon's NUPES bloc neck-and-neck with Macron's Ensemble! alliance in the first round of the French legislative elections, with 26.20% and 25.8% respectively. A video of a leopard climbing a ladder out of a well in the eastern Indian state of Odisha has been shared widely online. After the leopard got trapped in the well, local officials dropped a ladder to the animal. The leopard was able to climb to safety and was released back into its habitat. A vulnerable species, the leopard is protected in India.

French voters return to the polls on Sunday in the first round of parliamentary elections. Voter abstention is estimated at 53%, an all-time high, according to an Ipsos projection for FRANCE 24. FRANCE 24's James André tells us more.

12 June marks the World Day Against Child Labour to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it. An estimated 800,000 children work in the cocoa sector, some for their parents and some trafficked from abroad, according to a 2018 report by anti-slavery organisation Walk Free Foundation. The decaying 45-year-old oil tanker known as the FSO Safer, long used as a floating storage platform and now abandoned off the rebel-held Yemeni port of Hodeida, has not been serviced since Yemen was plunged into civil war. Energy minister Kanchana Wijesekera said the state-run Ceylon Petroleum Corporation was struggling to finance oil imports, while consumption had shot up due to shortages of electricity and liquefied petroleum gas. "We have no choice but to register consumers at filling stations and give them a guaranteed weekly quota until we are able to strengthen the financial situation," the minister said. Richard Marles, whose centre-left government came to power in May, held talks for over an hour with China's Wei Fenghe on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore.
