Cops, cleaners, Kevins: Fresh faces take a seat in France's National Assembly

France24.com (en)

France's new slate of lower-house lawmakers sit in the National Assembly for the first time on Tuesday to open the 16th Legislature. An astonishing surge of far-right and leftist winners in elections this month not only deprived centre-right Emmanuel Macron of an absolute legislative majority; it also provided some of the new chamber's most unusual profiles. Some stand as symbolic outliers while others illustrate genuine trends. FRANCE 24 takes a look at some of the most noteworthy novices.

US to work with Taiwan, Vietnam against illegal fishing

France24.com (en)

As a major UN conference opened in Portugal on restoring the planet's ailing oceans, US President Joe Biden signed a memorandum that aimed to step up coordination and enforcement within the US government against illegal fishing and the use of forced labor. The White House said the United States also plans new engagement with Ecuador, Panama, Senegal, Taiwan and Vietnam on fighting illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, dubbed "IUU" in environmental jargon. An administration official said... Читать дальше...

How has the case for Scottish independence evolved since 2014?

France24.com (en)

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will set out a "route map" on Tuesday to a second independence referendum. In a 2014 referendum, 55 percent of voters in Scotland chose to stay in the UK – and much to the chagrin of Unionists, the Scottish government plans to hold another next October. But from Brexit to a scandal-plagued prime minister occupying Downing Street, a lot has changed since the last vote.

Three things we learned from the England-New Zealand series

France24.com (en)

Below AFP Sport looks at three things we learned from England's first campaign under their new leadership team of coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes. New attitude A year ago, England made absolutely no effort to chase down a target of 273 in the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's as the match petered out into a tame draw. Yet this series saw them chase down stiff targets of 277 and 299 in five-wicket wins at Lord's and Trent Bridge before Jonny Bairstow's blistering fifty made light of their pursuit of 296 in Leeds. Raducanu beats Van Uytvanck in Wimbledon opener

France24.com (en)

The 19-year-old British player, who was an injury doubt for the Grand Slam, struggled to impose herself early in the first-round match but broke serve in the seventh game. Van Uytvanck broke back but Raducanu again seized the initiative by breaking again and survived a tough test on her serve to take the first set 6-4. The pair swapped breaks in the second set and Raducanu broke again in the ninth game, comfortably holding serve and sealing victory with a backhand volley to the delight of the crowd. Stokes 'pushing the envelope' as England sweep New Zealand - McCullum

France24.com (en)

McCullum was known for a dynamic approach when captain of New Zealand and the attacking mindset now dubbed 'Baz ball', in deference to his nickname, was in evidence again during the third Test at Headingley on Monday. England, after rain washed out the final morning's session, took just 15.2 overs to score the remaining 113 runs they required to reach a target of 296 for a seven-wicket victory that followed a pair of five-wicket triumphs over the Test world champions at Lord's and Trent Bridge.... Credit Suisse fined over drugs gang money laundering

France24.com (en)

Switzerland's Federal Criminal Court found that the bank failed to take steps to prevent money laundering by the criminal organisation, deeming it guilty of breaching its corporate responsibility. Credit Suisse was fined two million Swiss francs ($2.1 million). The Zurich-based bank intends to appeal. It was faulted for the failure up through its hierarchy and by its legal and compliance departments to monitor "banking relations" linked to the criminal gang, and to ensure their "compliance with anti-money laundering rules". Oslo shooting suspect remanded in custody

France24.com (en)

Zaniar Matapour will have no contact with the outside world until July 25, Oslo District Court ruled. The 43-year-old is accused of killing two men and wounding 21 other people when he opened fire near a gay bar in central Oslo in the early hours of Saturday morning, amid celebrations linked to the city's Pride festival. Norway's domestic intelligence service has described the attack as "an act of Islamist terrorism" and said Matapour had "difficulties with his mental health." Norwegian police... Читать дальше...

US Supreme Court backs praying football coach

France24.com (en)

The court voted 6-3 along conservative-liberal lines that Joe Kennedy, a coach for Bremerton High School in Washington state, was protected by the US constitution's guarantee of religious freedom when in 2015 he ignored supervisors' warnings and continued to pray after the games. The high-profile case pitted backers of the principles of free exercise of religion with those focused on the constitution's insistence on separation of church and state -- that is, that public schools should not impose specific religious practices on students. Roman-era mosaic back in Israel as centrepiece of new museum

France24.com (en)

The mosaic, with vibrant colours that have survived the passage of time, measures around 17 by nine metres (55 by 30 feet), depicting roaring lions, elephants in battle, giraffes and dolphins, as well as fruits, flowers in baskets, and sailing vessels. It was discovered in the central city of Lod in 1996 and believed to have been the floor of a mansion dating back to the late third-early fourth century. According to an Israel Antiquities Authority archaeologist, the mosaic is not only "the most... Читать дальше...

France24.com (en)

The Jackson Women's Health Organization, the abortion clinic at the centre of the US Supreme Court's momentous decision to overturn Roe vs Wade, is carrying out its final abortions before it will be forced to close its doors on July 4. As angry anti-abortion protesters gathered outside the clinic on Saturday, escorts chaperoned arriving patients, while a small number of pro-life activists came out to show their support.

Iranian television broadcasts barrage of misinformation to present Ronaldo as pro-Palestine

France24.com (en)

With eight textbook examples of misinformation in just two minutes, Iranian public television channel IRIB broadcast a report on the football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo on June 15. The report made it seem like Ronaldo is a champion of the Palestinian cause, while expressing his “hatred” for Israel. But in reality, the story was rife with disinformation and crudely edited.

Rain delays England bid for New Zealand series sweep

France24.com (en)

England headed into the last day of the third and final Test on 183-2, needing just 113 more runs to reach a victory target of 296. But when Ollie Pope (81 not out) and Joe Root (55 not out) should have been resuming the run chase at 11:00 am local time (1000 GMT), persistent rain kept the players off the field and meant there was no play in the morning session. The umpires brought forward the lunch interval to 12:30 pm (1130 GMT) in the hope of getting play underway at 1:10 pm (1210 GMT). This... Читать дальше...

Ailing oceans in state of 'emergency', says UN chief

France24.com (en)

"Today we face what I would call an ocean emergency," UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres told thousands of policymakers, experts and advocates at the opening plenary, describing how seas have been hammered by climate change and pollution. Humanity depends on healthy oceans. They generate 50 percent of the oxygen we breathe and provide essential protein and nutrients to billions of people every day. Covering 70 percent of Earth's surface, oceans have also softened the impact of climate change for life on land. Читать дальше...

Queen Elizabeth II in Scotland for 'Holyrood week'

France24.com (en)

It was the first public appearance for the 96-year-old monarch, who has been dogged by ill health, since her Platinum Jubilee celebrations ended on June 5. She had previously held audiences at Windsor Castle with foreign diplomats and the Archbishop of Canterbury but had not been certain to travel to Edinburgh. She took part in the Ceremony of the Keys, which sees her handed the keys of the city and welcomed to her "ancient and hereditary kingdom" of Scotland. Other members of the royal family... England's Morgan to retire from international cricket - reports

France24.com (en)

Under Morgan, England won the 2019 50-over World Cup -- their first major global limited overs title -- and reached the top of the one-day and Twenty20 rankings. But the 35-year-old Dublin-born batter has been struggling with form and fitness issues this year. He was twice out for nought during the recent ODI series away to the Netherlands in Amstelveen and withdrew from the third match with a groin issue. England face India in a three-match T20 international series starting on July 7, while the T20 World Cup in Australia begins in October. Читать дальше...

Spain without injured Hermoso for Euro 2022

France24.com (en)

Hermoso, who recently signed for Mexican club Pachuca from Barcelona, has been ruled out of the tournament with a knee injury suffered shortly after joining up with the Spain group. Salma was the surprise name in Jorge Vilda's squad as the 18-year-old Villarreal striker is yet to feature for the national side. Spain are considered one of the favourites as they bid for a first major women's tournament success, with Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas among their ranks. They beat Australia 7-0 in a friendly on Saturday. Читать дальше...

Reigning Tour champion Pogacar given familiar support cast

France24.com (en)

The Slovenian was unsurprisingly on Monday named in the UAE Team Emirates line-up for the race, which gets underway in Copenhagen on Friday. Switzerland's Marc Hirschi was a notable omission, but Polish climber Rafal Majka, Mikkel Bjerg, Brandon McNulty and Vegard Stake Laengen all made the cut. New Zealander George Bennett and Spain's Marc Soler, both signed in the off-season, are in the team, as is Italian sprinter Matteo Trentin. "We've worked very hard all year as a team to prepare for this," said the 23-year-old Pogacar. Читать дальше...

Sri Lanka turn to spin in bid to inflict more pain on Australia

France24.com (en)

Sri Lanka secured a stunning 3-2 victory in the one-day international series last week and the hosts will counting on a bowling attack packed with spinners to give them the edge in the Tests. Captain Dimuth Karunaratne will lead a side bolstered by the addition of Jeffrey Vandersay to their spin brigade of Lasith Embuldeniya, Praveen Jayawickrama and Ramesh Mendis. The hosts bowled more than 40 overs of spin in the fourth ODI to clinch the 50-over series, giving a glimpse of what the Australian batsmen can expect to face in the longer format.
