Texas women denied abortions sue the state

France24.com (en)

It is the first such complaint filed by women who have been denied terminations since the US Supreme Court overturned abortion rights in June, according to the Center for Reproductive Rights, which represents them. The lawsuit, filed late Monday, "includes devastating, first-hand accounts of women's lives almost lost after they were denied the health care they needed," said Vice President Kamala Harris, who gave them her support in a statement Tuesday. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre... Читать дальше...

Three dead in Israel strike on Syria's Aleppo airport: monitor

France24.com (en)

The airport has been a major conduit for relief flights since a February 6 earthquake devastated swathes of southeastern Turkey and neighbouring Syria. A transport ministry official in Syria said the aid flights were among those brought to a stop from Aleppo, Syria's second city. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has a network of sources in war-torn Syria, said "a Syrian officer" and two people of unknown nationality were killed in the air strike. Syria's defence ministry... Читать дальше...

Vaughan's 'life and livelihood' at stake in racism hearing: lawyer

France24.com (en)

Vaughan is accused by the England and Wales Cricket Board of making a racist comment to Azeem Rafiq and three other Yorkshire players in 2009. Former Yorkshire batsman Vaughan has lost roles as a television pundit since the charges were made and revealed at the hearing that his health and wellbeing had also suffered. Christopher Stoner, Vaughan's lawyer, told the Cricket Discipline Commission in London: "This is obviously a matter of significant importance to my client. The shape of his life and livelihood are at stake. Читать дальше...

'Escalation in war of words': Xi harshly criticises US, followed by 'stern warning' from Chinese FM

France24.com (en)

China lashed out at the United States on Tuesday, with the foreign minister accusing Washington of stoking tensions between the two powers and warning of "conflict and confrontation". These geopolitical and economic superpowers have clashed in recent years over trade, human rights and other issues, but relations soured even further last month when the United States shot down a Chinese balloon it said was being used for surveillance -- a claim strenuously denied by Beijing. For more on the heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing... Читать дальше...

Faletau says off-field issues have distracted Wales in Six Nations bid

France24.com (en)

All four Welsh professional regions -- Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets -- face major funding cuts, leading to vastly reduced contract offers for many players whose deals expire at the end of this season, and an exodus appears inevitable. The off-field issues led to the threat of a players' strike before the Six Nations clash against England last month. Although industrial action was averted and the game went ahead as scheduled, Wales suffered a third successive Six Nations defeat. And they... Читать дальше...

Cort takes overall Paris-Nice lead

France24.com (en)

Nielsen, 30, holds a one-second advantage over Belgian Nathan Van Hooydonck in second place and three seconds over Australian Michael Matthews in third. Wednesday's fourth stage is a 165km ride south from Saint-Amand-Montrond to La Loge des Gardes passing through Vichy. "I thought it was a good route, it wasn't very technical, but not completely flat either," Cort said. "Tomorrow? It will be a difficult day but I will do my best to keep the jersey." Tour de France champion and Cort's compatriot Jonas Vingegaard is in fifth spot... Читать дальше...

UEFA to reimburse Liverpool fans who attended Paris Champions League final

France24.com (en)

Heavily criticised in an independent report published last month for organisational failures which "almost led to disaster", European football's governing body said its refund scheme would cover the entire Liverpool allocation of nearly 20,000, as well as supporters of Real and other spectators affected by the trouble outside the stadium. "Refunds will be available to all fans... where the most difficult circumstances were reported," UEFA said, adding that all ticket-holders who did not enter the... Читать дальше...

Israel strike knocks out airport in Syria's Aleppo: ministry

France24.com (en)

The airport has been a major conduit for aid flights since a February 6 earthquake devastated swathes of southeastern Turkey and neighbouring Syria, and they too were brought to a stop, a transport ministry official said. "At exactly 2:07 am (2307 GMT Monday), the Israeli enemy carried out an air attack from the Mediterranean west of Latakia targeting Aleppo international airport," the defence ministry said in a statement. The damage forced authorities to close the airport to all flights, the ministry added. Читать дальше...

Sub-Saharan migrants flee Tunisia following wave of racist attacks

France24.com (en)

Sub-Saharan migrants living in Tunisia have been the target of a surge in racist attacks, following a February 21 speech by President Kais Said denouncing what he called "hordes of illegal immigrants". Since then, many migrants have been urgently trying to return to their countries of origin. The Ivory Coast in particular has organised a repatriation of its citizens, who have had to pack up their lives and leave with just a few days' notice. Our correspondents in Tunis and Abidjan followed some of... Читать дальше...

Nigeria's education crisis: 20 million children out of school

France24.com (en)

Around 20 million Nigerian children do not go to school, according to figures from UNICEF, one of the highest numbers of out-of-school children anywhere in the world. Security fears, a lack of public schools and extreme poverty all contribute to keeping children out of school. For some, like 14-year-old Joy, who was abandoned under a bridge in Lagos by her mother, being taken out of school is also accompanied by severe trauma.

Do we really need to work longer? France's pension reform and the changing labour market

France24.com (en)

France is growing older. However, Europe's record-breaking life expectancy has a downside: in order to pay for its increasingly healthy legion of retirees, the French right wing says there's no other option but to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64. The left retorts that if corporations paid their fair share in taxes, that would more than sustain the country's cherished pay-as-you-go pension system. Ahead of what unions are billing as their biggest strikes yet against the government's pension reform... Local authorities said there were no reports of casualties or significant damage. But a shallower second quake, measuring 5.6 magnitude, hit nearly three hours later in the neighbouring municipality of New Bataan, triggering the collapse of some houses. England's Buttler sees room for improvement ahead of World Cup defence

France24.com (en)

England lost the third and final one-day international against Bangladesh in Chittagong on Monday by 50 runs, although the tourists had already secured the series. With an eye on the World Cup later this year in India -- where conditions will be similar to Bangladesh -- Buttler changed his England side for the final match. Sam Curran was promoted to number five in the batting order, scoring 23 off 49 balls, and the 18-year-old leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed made his ODI debut. The game was England's last scheduled 50-over match until September 8. Читать дальше...

WWII forced labour victims lash out at South Korea's 'dirty money' plan

France24.com (en)

Seoul announced plans Monday to pay the victims with money taken from South Korean companies that benefited from a 1965 reparations deal, in a bid to break the "vicious cycle" in its relations with Tokyo. Japan and the United States immediately welcomed the plan, which does not involve a fresh apology and envisages only voluntary contributions from the Japanese companies involved, such as Mitsubishi and Nippon Steel. But victims' groups said it fell far short of their demand for a full apology... Читать дальше...
