France24.com (en)

A heat dome has been baking the southwestern states all week, posing serious health risks to the elderly, construction workers, delivery workers and the homeless. In Arizona, one of the hardest-hit states, residents face a daily endurance marathon against the sun. Phoenix, the state capital, will record its 15th straight day above 109 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius) on Friday, according to the National Weather Services (NWS). The heat forced the cancellation of a series of concerts meant... Читать дальше...

France24.com (en)

A video of a young child hanging from the arms of a detained Haitian woman through the barred door of an immigration control truck in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, was published in early June. The country's migration director later dismissed the agent seen in the video. According to human rights groups, Haitians regularly face violent and arbitrary arrests. Every month, thousands of them are deported, despite calls from the UN to halt these forced removals.

Tunisia rights groups urge aid, shelter for stranded migrants

France24.com (en)

Hundreds of migrants fled or were forced out of Tunisia's second largest city after racial tensions flared following the July 3 killing of a Tunisian man in an altercation between locals and migrants. The port of Sfax is a departure point for many migrants from impoverished and violence-torn countries seeking a better life in Europe by making a perilous Mediterranean crossing, often in makeshift boats. Hundreds of migrants were forcibly taken to desert and hostile areas bordering Libya and Algeria after the unrest in Sfax. Читать дальше...

France24.com (en)

The hosts seemed to be cruising towards victory in the first encounter of the two-match series after Towhid Hridoy and Shamim Hossain put on 73 runs for the fifth wicket in reply to Afghanistan's 154-7. Then drama erupted at the Sylhet International Stadium. Rashid Khan removed Shamim for 33 to break the partnership, but Bangladesh were still favourites needing only six runs from the final over. Instead Janat dismissed Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed and Nasum Ahmed with the second, third and fourth balls of the over... Читать дальше...

France24.com (en)

Already facing the prospect of an innings defeat on a deteriorating pitch with the tourists' lead standing at an imposing 250 runs, the Caribbean team didn't help their cause when captain Kraigg Brathwaite dropped a regulation catch offered by Virat Kohli off left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican. On 40 at the time, the champion batsman and former skipper's painstaking effort has taken him to 72 off 170 balls at the break in partnership with Ravindra Jadeja (21 not out). UK govt approves construction of road tunnel near Stonehenge

France24.com (en)

The decision comes two years after campaigners won a legal battle to throw out permission for the project that would include digging a new two-mile (3.3 kilometre) tunnel running past the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The £1.7 billion ($2.2 billion) project is intended to ease congestion on an existing main road to southwest England that gets especially busy during the peak holiday periods. It was initially authorised in 2020 by Grant Shapps, the transport minister at the time, despite a panel of planning experts warning of "permanent... Читать дальше...

That left the Dane with a 9sec overall advantage after a stage won by Polish Ineos Grenadiers rider Michal Kwiatkowski. "It's a start, it was a good day, a small victory but it was worth it," said Pogacar after eking out a small gain on the upper reaches of the 17km brutal climb at an average seven percent gradient in the Jura mountain range. On the July 14 French national holiday, the fireworks started when Kwiatkowski... Читать дальше...

The 36-year-old faces world number one Carlos Alcaraz or Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev in his fifth successive Wimbledon final on Sunday. "Semi-finals are always going to be very intense. Iraqis beat summer heat by swimming in shrinking Tigris river

France24.com (en)

Near a bridge linking the east of the city to the west, Abed stood in the middle of the river, but the water only came up to his waist. "I live here in Adhamiya, like my grandfather did before me. Year after year, the water situation gets worse," said the 37-year-old, referring to his neighbourhood nestled along the Tigris in northern Baghdad. Abed waded through the water to the middle of the ancient river, as temperatures reached near 50 degrees celsius (122 Farenheit) and wind whipped through the city like a hair dryer one July afternoon.
