New research offers insight into emerging tomato virus – and advice about a popular resistance

Phys.org

Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) is an emerging virus that is damaging to tomatoes as well as other crops, including peppers. In a recent study, Dr. Ling and colleagues at the USDA Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Vegetable Laboratory in Charleston, South Carolina conducted comprehensive experiments to evaluate two key properties: experimental host range and disease resistance in tomatoes.

Researchers develop promising molecule in quest to create drug to treat COVID-19

Phys.org

Uppsala researchers have succeeded in designing a molecule that inhibits the replication of coronaviruses and has great potential for development into a drug suitable for treating COVID-19. The molecule is effective against both the new variant and previously identified coronaviruses. The research article has been published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

How El Niño and drought affected the transatlantic slave trade

Phys.org

El Niño, an oceanic phenomenon that affects worldwide weather patterns, significantly affected the number of enslaved Africans transported from West Africa to the Americas between the mid-1600s and mid-1800s, according to a study from the University of California, Davis.

Gene important in soybean protein content found after 30-year search

Phys.org

Soybeans outmatch all other legumes as the protein powerhouses of the plant kingdom, providing a key protein source for humans and livestock around the world. And now, after 30 years, University of Illinois scientists have identified the gene with the largest impact on seed protein in soybean.

Research team finds clue to possible extraterrestrial origin of peptides

Phys.org

Researchers from the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy have discovered a new clue in the search for the origin of life, by showing that peptides can form on dust under conditions such as those prevailing in outer space. These molecules, which are one of the basic building blocks of all life, may therefore not have originated on our planet at all, but possibly in cosmic molecular clouds.

Russian Soyuz rocket launches 34 new UK satellites

Phys.org

A Russian Soyuz rocket blasted 34 satellites into space on Thursday for British operator OneWeb, which aims to provide broadband internet everywhere in the world, Moscow's space agency Roscosmos said.

US calls for talks with Mexico on endangered porpoise

Phys.org

Washington has invoked the environmental provisions of the North American free trade pact to urge Mexico to do more to protect the critically endangered vaquita porpoise, officials announced Thursday.

European diets need to change to reduce climate impact

Phys.org

The amount of poultry in European diets isn't conducive to an optimal circular food system, which prioritizes crops that produce healthy foods while reducing or reusing waste streams, a new Cornell University research finds.

Researchers identify SARS-CoV-2 variants with potential to escape cellular immune response

Phys.org

A number of existing strains of SARS-CoV-2, as well as other future variants that could arise, have the potential to escape the immune system's cytotoxic T cell response in some portion of the population. That's the conclusion of a new modeling study publishing February 10th in PLOS Computational Biology by Antonio Martín-Galiano of the Carlos III Health Institute, Spain, and colleagues.

Researchers devise sex-cell precursors with staying power

Phys.org

Human primordial germ cells (PGCs) are the early precursors of the eggs (oocytes) and sperm that are necessary to keep humankind alive and reproducing. Medical researchers attempt to study their function and development using models of these cells called human primordial germ-cell-like cells (PGCLCs).

Poorest people bear growing burden of heat waves as temperatures rise

Phys.org

People with lower incomes are exposed to heat waves for longer periods of time compared to their higher income counterparts due to a combination of location and access to heat adaptations like air conditioning. This inequality is expected to rise as temperatures increase, according to new research.

Study describes challenges and opportunities for detection of high-frequency gravitational waves

Phys.org

Electromagnetic (EM) waves and gravitational waves are the only available means to study the Universe on a large scale. For millennia, only the former could be used, in naked-eye astronomical observations by the ancients based on the reception of visible light, or present-day super telescopes operating in various bands of the EM spectrum, from radio waves to gamma rays.

New Yorkers back vaccine requirements to speed economic recovery, survey says

Phys.org

New Yorkers entering their third year of COVID have bleak views of the near-term economy and a strong conviction that vaccines should be required for those seeking to participate in their city's indoor activities (69%), to work in its service industries (66%) or schools (69%), and even to travel on airplanes (68%).

Using epsilon machines to assist in the search for alien life

Phys.org

A team of researchers from the California Institute of Technology and Sony Computer Science Laboratories has begun to search for life on other planets using a tool that analyzes statistical complexity. In their paper published in the journal Nature Astronomy, the group describes using epsilon machines to search for life on alien worlds.

Researchers reveal evolution of Central Tibetan Valley

Phys.org

A new study led by Prof. Ding Lin from the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research (ITP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has revealed the evolution of the Central Tibetan Valley, which may shed light on the formation of Tibetan Plateau.

African heritage sites threatened by coastal flooding and erosion as sea-level rise accelerates

Phys.org

A global team of climate risk and heritage experts, for which Dr. Nicholas Simpson from the University of Cape Town's (UCT) African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI) was one of the leading contributors, has provided the first comprehensive assessment of exposure of African cultural and natural heritage sites to extreme sea levels and erosion associated with accelerating sea level rise.

How guard cell chloroplasts obtain energy

Phys.org

Whether Guard Cells (GCs) carry out photosynthesis has been debated for decades. Earlier studies suggested that guard cell chloroplasts (GCCs) cannot fix CO2 but later studies argued otherwise. Until recently, it has remained controversial whether GCCs and/or GC photosynthesis play a direct role in stomatal movements. Dr. Boon Leong LIM, Associate Professor of the School of Biological Sciences of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), in collaboration with Dr. Diana SANTELIA from ETH Zürich, discovered... Withdrawal of rivers and lakes is faster near cities

Phys.org

The depletion of water resources (e.g., rivers and lakes) is more rapid and evident in proximity of urban areas and, away from cities, it gradually decreases. A research group from the University of Bologna analyzed 30 years worth of satellite imagery of areas of the United States and developed a model that is able to predict the distribution of water loss in connection with urban areas proximity. Their study was published in the journal AGU Advances.

Hemoglobin acts as a chemosensory cue for mother mice to protect pups

Phys.org

Biochemists in Japan were surprised to discover that the molecule hemoglobin in the blood works not only as an oxygen carrier; when blood is spilled as a result of aggression, accident or predator attack, the molecule also acts as a chemosensory signal for lactating mother mice, prompting digging or rearing behavior to check the surrounding environment and keep their offspring safe.
