Stay on the sunny side: Optimistic animal foragers have better lives in behavior model

Phys.org

A positive-thinking bison, oryx or black bear has a better chance of a full belly and long-term health than a neutral-thinking or pessimistic one according to newly published research from Tal Avgar from the department of Wildland Resources and Oded Berger-Tal from the Ben-Gurion University of Negev, Israel. The team developed a model for animal foraging that considered "valence-dependent optimism bias"—a lopsided learning process in which information about bad outcomes is discounted or ignored. The model showed that when faced with decisions... Читать дальше...

Dogs can recognize their owner by voice alone

Phys.org

A new study from the researchers of the Department of Ethology at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Hungary reveals that dogs can recognize their owner by voice alone, and they make use of some of the same voice properties as humans do. The study is published in Animal Cognition.

25 years of global progress across sanitation service levels assessed against Millennium Development Goal

Phys.org

A new analysis is the first to apply a novel metric for evaluating improvements in sanitation across individual countries between 1990 and 2015, surfacing insights that could inform further progress. Julia Zimmerman of the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, and U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Mississippi and colleagues present these findings in the open-access journal PLOS Water on February 15, 2022.

Microorganism discovered in spacecraft assembly facility named for Berkeley Lab microbiologist

Phys.org

Space exploration has allowed humans to journey from earth to space—but humans may not be the only organisms hitching a ride by spacecraft. Microbiologists who study extreme environments are on the lookout for microorganisms present on spacecraft surfaces that could potentially contaminate the pristine environments of outer space. Now a new fungal strain has been discovered in a spacecraft assembly facility and named after a long-time Berkeley Lab microbiologist, Tamas Torok.

Researchers use supercomputers for largest-ever turbulence simulations

Phys.org

Despite being among the topics most researched on supercomputers, a fundamental understanding of the effects of turbulent motion on fluid flows still eludes scientists. A new approach developed at TU Darmstadt and running at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre aims to change that.

New drug candidates identified in bacteria

Phys.org

Bacteria show great promise as a source of active ingredients. Using computer-based genome analysis, researchers at ETH Zurich have now discovered a new class of natural products that might one day serve as antibiotics.

Einstein's relativity theory passes strict test based on LHAASO observation

Phys.org

Researchers from the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences examined the validity of the theory of relativity with the highest accuracy in a study entitled "Exploring Lorentz Invariance Violation from Ultrahigh-Energy γRays Observed by LHAASO," which was published in the latest issue of Physical Review Letters.

Virgin Galactic re-opens ticket sales for $450,000

Phys.org

Virgin Galactic, which last year flew its flamboyant founder Richard Branson to space, will re-open ticket sales to the general public starting Wednesday, for the sum of $450,000.

Engineers deploy drones to survey Marshall Fire, gather lessons for future disasters

Phys.org

The drone whirs to life on a driveway in the Spanish Hills neighborhood of Boulder County. Its four spinning motors lift it to nearly 200 feet above the ground. Below, the cul-de-sac comes into view, revealing the stone chimneys and blackened foundations that dot the hillside—what remains of many of the houses in this neighborhood after flames swept through on Dec. 30 and into the morning of Dec. 31 during what would become known as the Marshall Fire.

Researchers develop a nanoparticle-based drug delivery system based on corn to target cancer cells

Phys.org

Nanomaterials have revolutionized the world of cancer therapy, and plant-derived nanoparticles have the added advantage of being cost-effective and easy to mass produce. Researchers from Tokyo University of Science have recently developed novel corn-derived bionanoparticles for targeting cancer cells directly, via an immune mechanism. The results are encouraging, and the technique has demonstrated efficacy in treating tumor-bearing laboratory mice. Moreover, no serious adverse effects have been reported in mice so far.

Microgravity worms help solve astronauts' muscle troubles

Phys.org

A new study on nematode worms reveals that physical contact with objects can help prevent neuromuscular decline in simulated microgravity. The research, which was published in the journal iScience, provides new insights into maintaining human health in space.

How reacting to a changing environment involves inhibiting previous behavior

Phys.org

Researchers from Germany, the US, and the UK teamed up to understand the role of flexibility and inhibition in problem solving and how they relate to each other in a behaviorally flexible urban bird species, the great-tailed grackle. The researchers assessed the cognitive abilities of individuals using multiple tests, and found that self control, a form of inhibition, was linked with flexibility, the ability to change preferences when circumstances change.

A more precise numerical model of butterfly flight dynamics

Phys.org

Butterfly flight is a complex phenomenon in which the flow of air generated by the flapping of wings and the movement of the butterflies themselves are intricately intertwined. Many elements of butterfly aerodynamics have yet to be understood, even in terms of basic movement.

Gene editing now possible in ticks

Phys.org

Researchers have successfully used CRISPR-Cas9 to edit the genomes of the black-legged tick. To accomplish this feat, they developed an embryo injection protocol that overcame a major barrier in the field. The work appears February 15 in the journal iScience.
