Developing sustainable membranes for future energy

Phys.org

A recently published paper in Science "Polytriazole membranes with ultrathin tunable selective layer for crude oil fractionation," offers an innovative membrane development solution to handle unique industrial conditions, such as hydrocarbon fractionation.

Update on Golden Retriever Lifetime Study published

Phys.org

As the Morris Animal Foundation Golden Retriever Lifetime Study approaches its 10th anniversary, a newly published paper in the journal PLOS ONE reviews the study's findings to date and previews research in progress.

What shedding light on plant growth could mean for cancer

Phys.org

Understanding how plants process light is key to improving crop yields. Light helps plants know when to grow and flower at the right time. Plants find light using proteins called photoreceptors. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) Assistant Professor Ullas Pedmale's team uncovered how proteins called UBP12 and UBP13 help regulate a photoreceptor called CRY2. Published in Current Biology, their discovery might reveal new ways to control growth—which could have broad applications beyond agriculture.

Rural areas will bear the brunt of US sea-level rise

Phys.org

It's hotly debated whether coastal wetlands can survive sea-level rise by migrating inland. A new analysis using highly detailed elevation maps of the Chesapeake Bay region shows that—contrary to previous studies—human barriers will do little to slow this marsh migration. Instead, extensive areas of low-lying rural land will allow coastal marshes to persist or even expand as salty water creeps upward into what are now forests and farmland.

A warming climate decreases microbial diversity, study finds

Phys.org

Researchers at the University of Oklahoma have found that the warming climate is decreasing microbial diversity, which is essential for soil health. Led by Jizhong Zhou, Ph.D., the director of the Institute for Environmental Genomics at OU, the research team conducted an eight-year experiment that found that climate warming played a predominant role in shaping microbial biodiversity, with significant negative effect. Their findings are published in Nature Microbiology.

Study explores uncertainties in flood risk estimates

Phys.org

Flood frequency analysis is a technique used to estimate flood risk, providing statistics such as the "100-year flood" or "500-year flood" that are critical to infrastructure design, dam safety analysis, and flood mapping in flood-prone areas. But the method used to calculate these flood frequencies is due for an update, according to a new study by scientists from The Desert Research Institute (DRI), University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Colorado State University.

'Alternative facts' are cons, and journalists can help quash them, new paper argues

Phys.org

Journalists need not cover both sides of an argument when one side is advancing what experts widely regard as a con, Illinois Institute of Technology John and Mae Calamos Endowed Chair in Philosophy J. D. Trout argues in his latest publication. "The Epistemic Virtues of a Closed Mind: Effective Science Reporting in the Golden Age of the Con" appears in Frontiers in Communication: Science and Environmental Communication. Trout published the paper with co-author Michael Bishop, a professor of philosophy at Florida State University.

New study determines that Catalonia's anchovies are healthy and free of the parasite Anisakis

Phys.org

A study conducted by the research group SEAaq (Ecosystem and Aquatic Animal Health) of the Department of Animal Biology, Plant Biology and Ecology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and published in the journal Science of The Total Environment has focused on the analysis of the state of health of anchovies found in different points of the Catalan coast (Tarragona, Barcelona and Blanes).

Whale mothers choose nursery sites in shallow waters where predators cannot 'eavesdrop' on communication with young

Phys.org

Sitting on a beach looking out to sea, it may seem unusual to spot one of the world's largest animals swimming in shallow coastal 30-foot-deep waters. But each winter, female southern right whales migrate thousands of miles to bay habitats to give birth and care for their young. So why do they choose such shallow nursery grounds that may be within dangerous proximity to human activity and where food supply is scarce?

Mistletoe berries may hold the secret for creating a biological super glue

Phys.org

Each mistletoe berry can produce up to two meters of a gluey thread called viscin. It allows the seeds of this parasitic plant to stick to and infect host plants. Since ancient times, mistletoe berries have been explored as treatments for everything from infertility and epilepsy to cancer. But, until now, no one has fully investigated the potential medical or technical uses of the glue itself. A recent paper from McGill University and the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, published in PNAS Nexus... Читать дальше...

NASA telescope to help untangle galaxy growth, dark matter makeup

Phys.org

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will study wispy streams of stars that extend far beyond the apparent edges of many galaxies. Missions like the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes would have to patch together hundreds of small images to see these structures around nearby galaxies in full. Roman will do so in a single snapshot. Astronomers will use these observations to explore how galaxies grow and the nature of dark matter.

New substrate for deep UV surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering

Phys.org

The extreme accuracy and speed of NBA three-pointer Stephen Curry's long-range shots are well known to basketball fans around the world, but accuracy and speed are also a focus of research in biochemical testing. Dr. Yen Ta-Jen, professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan, has published a paper about deep UV surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (DUV-SERRS) in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, in which he revises conceptions... Thousands of galaxies shine in ultraviolet light in new Hubble image

Phys.org

A new image from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope is brimming with distant galaxies in an assortment of shapes. Some are seen face-on and appear oval or as disks or spirals, while others are seen edge-on and look more like cigars. The new image differs from past views of the same field of galaxies in that it now includes observations made in ultraviolet light.

Scientists on the hunt for planetary formation fossils reveal unexpected eccentricities in nearby debris disk

Phys.org

Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), astronomers have imaged the debris disk of the nearby star HD 53143 at millimeter wavelengths for the first time, and it looks nothing like they expected. Based on early coronagraphic data, scientists expected ALMA to confirm the debris disk as a face-on ring peppered with clumps of dust. Instead, the observations took a surprise turn, revealing the most complicated and eccentric debris disk observed to date. The observations were presented... Читать дальше...

Harnessing machine learning to analyze quantum material

Phys.org

Electrons and their behavior pose fascinating questions for quantum physicists, and recent innovations in sources, instruments and facilities allow researchers to potentially access even more of the information encoded in quantum materials.

All-dielectric grating structure color filter for sensing and display imaging

Phys.org

Compared with traditional color dyes, structural color has the advantages of high resolution and good stability, which can achieve full-tone modulation in the visible light range. All-dielectric metasurface structures are proposed to replace plasmonic metasurfaces with higher losses. Due to the existence of high-order dipole resonance mode in the short-wave range, the enhancement of color saturation is limited. The researchers propose a feasible scheme to suppress the high-order dipole mode to solve this problem.
