Magnetic superstructures as a promising material for 6G technology

Phys.org

When will 6G be a reality? The race to realize sixth generation (6G) wireless communication systems requires the development of suitable magnetic materials. Scientists from Osaka Metropolitan University and their colleagues have detected an unprecedented collective resonance at high frequencies in a magnetic superstructure called a chiral spin soliton lattice (CSL), revealing CSL-hosting chiral helimagnets as a promising material for 6G technology. The study was published in Physical Review Letters.

Team develops powerful new tool to aid in battle against cancer-causing bacteria in the stomach

Phys.org

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), the bacteria that can cause human gastritis, peptic ulcers and stomach cancer, infects about half of the world's population. It is essential to quickly identify the infection and select the right combination of sensitive antibiotics. Current tools, however, are limited, mainly because H. pylori are slow-growing and hard to cultivate.

Scientists identify a protein key to inhibiting replication of the flu virus

Phys.org

A collaborative study from UT Southwestern scientists has identified a new function for a protein called TAO2 that appears to be key to inhibiting replication of the influenza virus, which sickens millions of individuals worldwide each year and kills hundreds of thousands. The findings were published in PNAS.

Melting Arctic ice could transform international shipping routes, study finds

Phys.org

With climate change rapidly warming the world's oceans, the future of the Arctic Ocean looks grim. Climate models show that parts of the Arctic that were once covered in ice year-round are warming so quickly that they will be reliably ice-free for months on end in as few as two decades. The Arctic's changing climate will endanger countless species that thrive in sub-zero temperatures, scientists say.

New class of excitons with hybrid dimensionality in layered silicon diphosphide

Phys.org

Researchers from Nanjing University and Beihang University in China and the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD) in Hamburg, Germany, have produced a new class of exciton with hybrid dimensionality by engineering the properties of layered silicon diphosphide (SiP₂). Their work has been published in Nature Materials.

As Colorado River reservoirs drop, Western states urged to 'act now'

Phys.org

With the Colorado River's depleted reservoirs continuing to drop to new lows, the federal government has taken the unprecedented step of telling the seven Western states that rely on the river to find ways of drastically cutting the amount of water they take in the next two months.

Leaf mold compost shows benefit for tomato plants in degraded urban soils

Phys.org

Many urban gardeners know that adding ingredients like compost and mulch to their soil has great benefits. But it can be difficult to know what to add and why. Researchers at Purdue University gathered scientific evidence about one specific soil addition, leaf mold compost, and how it benefits tomato plants.

Compact Muon Solenoid on the lookout for new physics

Phys.org

With Run 3 of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) just around the corner, the LHC experiments are still publishing new results based on the previous runs' data. Despite no new discoveries being announced, small deviations from expectations are appearing in a small number of analyses. At the current level, these deviations can still be attributed to random fluctuations in data, but they indicate regions that need to be investigated closely once the new stream of collisions arrives. Below are a few examples... Читать дальше...

Blood pressure e-tattoo promises continuous, mobile monitoring

Phys.org

Blood pressure is one of the most important indicators of heart health, but it's tough to frequently and reliably measure outside of a clinical setting. For decades, cuff-based devices that constrict around the arm to give a reading have been the gold standard. But now, researchers at The University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University have developed an electronic tattoo that can be worn comfortably on the wrist for hours and deliver continuous blood pressure measurements at an accuracy... Damaged plants and fake perfumes can be identified rapidly and reliably in real time

Phys.org

The chiral signature of a fragrance can reveal whether a perfume is genuine or fake. Similarly, the chiral signature of the emissions of a plant can provide information on whether the plant is healthy or sick. Researchers at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) and the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (MPIC) have developed an innovative approach capable of identifying and monitoring such chiral signatures. Most natural chiral substances are found in two mirror-image forms present in different relative quantities. Читать дальше...

How to store more carbon in soil during climate change

Phys.org

Researchers from Cornell University, Ohio State University, Technical University of Munich, and the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station are using synchrotron light to investigate how moisture affects soil carbon—an important ingredient for healthy crops and fertile fields.

Researchers uncover molecular basis of antigen processing for cancer target MR1

Phys.org

In a new study published in Nature Chemical Biology, researchers at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) have revealed the molecular mechanics of a cell-surface molecule that is a potential immunotherapy target. Using sophisticated techniques, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, the researchers demonstrated the importance of so-called chaperone molecules in stabilizing this target, known as MHC-I-related protein 1 (MR1).

Cut and stretch assay reveals resistance genes

Phys.org

Which antimicrobial resistance genes are present in bacteria, for example in a hospital ward? For laboratories with limited financial resources characterizing bacterial DNA is difficult, as this often requires expensive equipment. Researchers at Chalmers have now developed a method that can detect specific bacterial genes that encode resistance using standard microscopes, which are already used to diagnose tuberculosis in low-income countries.
