Dozens of rescuers worked to clear an escape path and position sleds under the animals so they could be pulled out. More than a dozen people pulled the horses free using the sleds and rope.

He said during his four terms he and his team have worked to grow the economy, make Vermont more affordable and protect the most vulnerable. While progress has been made, he said there's more work to do and to accomplish that the Democrat-controlled legislature needs to be more balanced. Scott and the legislature have clashed over spending and taxes. Читать дальше...

More US parents than ever have paid leave this Mother's Day - but most still don't

Times Union

More working U.S. parents than ever are celebrating their first Mother’s Day with hard-fought access to paid time off to care for newborns. But the majority still must forego pay to care for new babies or other loved ones, even as efforts to expand paid parental and family leave gain traction. Bipartisan groups in the U.S. Senate and House have revived efforts to expand paid leave to more workers, with momentum building to introduce legislation this year. In the absence of a federal law, 13 states... Читать дальше...

Michael Cohen: A challenging star witness in Donald Trump's hush money trial

Times Union

Michael Cohen is the most central witness for prosecutors in former President Donald Trump's hush money trial. But Trump’s fixer-turned-foe is also as challenging a star witness as they come. He's expected to take the stand on Monday and offer jurors an insider’s view of the dealings at the heart of the case. The now-disbarred lawyer has a long history with Trump and has become a relentless Trump critic. There are question's about Cohen's credibility. He's pleaded guilty to lying to Congress and a bank... US aims to stay ahead of China in using AI to fly fighter jets, navigate without GPS and more

Times Union

When two U.S. fighter jets recently faced off in a dogfight in California, only one was piloted by a human. The other was flown by AI, in a display of how far the U.S. military has come in its use of artificial intelligence. But it’s only a hint of the technology on the horizon. Among the new projects is one that could help the military keep operating and navigate by magnetic fields if a GPS satellite is attacked. But there are significant concerns, especially when it comes to whether AI-enabled... Читать дальше...

Roger Corman, Hollywood mentor and 'King of the Bs,' dies at 98

Times Union

Roger Corman, Hollywood’s “King of the Bs,” has died. He was 98. Corman produced such low-budget classics as “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Attack of the Crab Monsters” and gave many of Hollywood’s most famous actors and directors their first breaks in some of the hundreds of B-movies he helped create as a producer and director. Martin Scorsese, James Cameron and Francis Ford Coppola all worked for him early in their careers, as did Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda and Ellen Burstyn. Some of Corman's former underlings repaid his kindness years later.

Local governments struggle to distribute their share of billions from opioid settlements

Times Union

Local governments across the country are receiving money from opioid settlements, but not all of them know how to use it. Most towns and cities with populations over 10,000 are getting pieces of the funds, which total over $50 billion. Most of the money is required to be used to address the nation's generations-long opioid overdose and addiction crisis. Advocates want to see governments assess their needs and take input from the public and experts as they figure out their plans. In at least one suburban New Jersey county... Читать дальше...

Crews prepare for controlled demolition as cleanup continues at bridge collapse site

Times Union

Crews are preparing to conduct a controlled demolition to break down the largest remaining span of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Maryland. The explosives are expected to be detonated Sunday. The steel span landed on the bow of a massive container ship that lost power and crashed into one of the bridge’s support columns shortly after leaving Baltimore on March 26. Since then, the ship has been stuck amid the wreckage and Baltimore’s busy port has been closed to most maritime traffic. The... Читать дальше...

Schools turn to artificial intelligence to spot guns as companies press lawmakers for state funds

Times Union

Schools across the U.S. are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence and video cameras to spot guns. Some states are considering multimillion-dollar grant programs for the technology. But many of those bills have been written with specific criteria so only one software provider can qualify. That company is ZeroEyes, which was founded a few years ago by military veterans. The chair of the National Council of School Safety Directors says the technology is good. But he has concerns about state... Читать дальше...

Trump tells Jersey Shore crowd he's being forced to endure 'Biden show trial' in hush money case

Times Union

Donald Trump is blaming President Joe Biden for the criminal charges he’s facing as the presumptive nominees prepare to face off in the November election and called his New York hush money case “a Biden show trial.” Blasting the Democratic president as “a total moron” and “a fool,” Trump told a crowd of tens of thousands on the Jersey Shore that the cases against him were politically motivated and timed to harm his ability to campaign. Trump spoke at a Saturday evening rally in the resort town of Wildwood... Читать дальше...

Times Union

Small pro-Palestinian protests are popping up sporadically as colleges and universities hold commencement services. Among the demonstrations on Saturday were dozens of graduating students at Virginia Commonwealth University who walked out on Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s address. While some of the estimated 100 students and family members who left during the Republican governor’s speech showed support for Palestinians, others held signs signaling their opposition to Youngkin’s education policies, according to WRIC-TV. Controversy follows Gov. Kristi Noem as she is banned by two more South Dakota tribes

Times Union

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem is now banned from entering nearly 20% of her state after two more tribes banished her this week over comments she made earlier this year about tribal leaders benefitting from drug cartels. The latest developments in the ongoing tribal dispute come on the heels of the backlash Noem faced for writing about killing a hunting dog that misbehaved in her latest book. It is not clear how these controversies will affect her chances to become Donald Trump’s running mate because... Читать дальше...

Experts say gun alone doesn't justify deadly force in fatal shooting of Florida airman

Times Union

The killing of a Black U.S. Air Force senior airman by a Florida sheriff's deputy responding to a phoned-in complaint about an argument has the airman's family calling for charges, saying the shooting was completely unjustified. Authorities, though, say the May 3 killing of Roger Fortson at his home is a clear case of self-defense involving an Okaloosa County deputy who had to make a split-second, life-or-death decision. The deputy, whose name and race haven't been released, shot Fortson six times... Читать дальше...
