We interview Scream stars Jack Quaid and Melissa Barrera about their experience making the new horror film and their favorite franchise moments.
More than a decade after Scream 4, the iconic horror franchise returns with Scream. The new film combines series veterans like Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette, with a group of newcomers as two generations of characters attempt to figure out who the new Ghostface killer is. Among the fresh faces are Melissa Barrera and Jack Quaid.
Barrera and Quaid spoke to Screen Rant about their experience on Scream and their favorite moments of the franchise.
Screen Rant: We're headed back to Woodsboro. We're going to Stu's house. We're back with the legacy cast, the new cast. When does the pinch-me moment set in for you?
Jack Quaid: Oh man, I think it was working with David, the first day I worked with David. I think he was the first legacy cast member I got to work with, and just to see David Arquette in front of me, it being Dewey and doing all of his Dewey-isms, was just incredible. I think that's when it really hit me like, "okay, yeah, I'm definitely in a Scream movie."
Melissa Barrera: I had so many pinch-me moments. Every day I had a pinch-me moment. I think the first day on set, I had a pinch-me moment, first day with David, first day with Courtney, first day with Neve, first day with Ghostface. It was just every day.
Jack Quaid: There was a lot of pinching.
Melissa Barrera: Yeah, a lot of pinching was going on.
I like even Ghostface. "Excuse me... Are you Ghostface?"
Jack Quaid: "Excuse me, sir? I don't wanna bother you. But are you Ghostface? Are you going to kill me?" (laughter)
Now, this franchise is so iconic and what I love about it is, they're all hits. Everyone loves them and everyone has different reasons they love them. Do you have a favorite line or moment across the entire franchise?
Jack Quaid: Oh, there's so many. You know what? The first thing that came to mind – because I don't even know if this is my top one, I just love it – I think it's Matthew Lillard saying, "My parents are gonna be so mad at me." Everything he does at that very '90s kitchen-desk-phone-office thing. It's that, and when he goes, "Peer pressure. I'm way too sensitive." All that stuff. It's just so good.
Melissa Barrera: This is a moment, I don't know the exact line, but it's when Gale Weathers shows up at Sidney's house after Ghostface attacks her for the first time at home, and she's with the cameraman. She's like, "hurry up! hurry up!" and he's late. And then she turns to him and goes, "When I say move, you move your lard ass!" I don't know what she says, but it's so cruel. It's so hilarious. I just love that moment.
There have been seven Ghostface killers up until this new movie. Who has been your favorite killer revealed thus far?
Melissa Barrera: Our movie's pretty great!
Jack Quaid: Yeah, our movie's pretty great!
No, but I don't know. I think it's hard to top Billy and Stu. I mean, spoilers, but they're so great throughout the movie, and then when it's revealed that they're the killers, they're just even more hilarious and weird. They have such a weird dynamic with each other in that kitchen scene as well, which I thought was so fascinating. So for me, I got to go with the classic.
Melissa Barrera: Yes the classic, I think it's also my top. But I think in the third movie, Roman is also so shocking because I just thought the motive was so good. Him being an unrecognized son that just wanted a mother's love and is so angry. I just thought that was such a good motive and such a good reason to have a third movie.
