Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Erik Lamela has won the coveted Puskas award for his goal against Arsenal at the FIFA Best ceremony earlier this evening.
The Argentinean, who has since left the club to join Sevilla Sevilla – saw his stunning improvised rabona find the bottom corner in last season’s north London derby at the Emirates Stadium.
The goal came after Sergio Reguilon cushioned a volley into Lucas Moura, who laid the ball off to Lamela inside the Arsenal box. Lamela then struck a first-time rabona with his left foot which went through the legs of Thomas Partey and into the far corner of the goal.
The goal gave Tottenham the lead in the fixture but it proved to be one of disappointment after losing the match 2-1, while Lamela was also later sent off.
It is the second successive time a Tottenham goal has been chosen as the winner of the award, following in the footsteps of Heung-min Son’s brilliant individual effort against Burnley in 2020.
Lamela beat the likes of Luis Diaz, Patrik Schick and Riyad Mahrez in taking the crown.
The 29-year-old’s effort also scooped the Premier League Goal of the Season back in June (Spurs official).
Lamela joined the ceremony via video link and was quoted by the Daily Star as saying: “Thank you so much, I’m very happy to win this award,”
“Honestly, nothing [was going through his mind], in that moment I didn’t think too much.
“I didn’t realise how special the goal was.
“I just kicked the ball and started running around the pitch with my teammates!”

Lamela was capable of a stunning rabona and it was not the first time in which he had scored such a goal for the club, having also netted in a Europa League tie during a 5-1 victory over Greek side Asteras Tripolis in 2014.
