Calgary Herald

It’s hard to tell who drew the short straw. While Dean Roland is fielding questions from some goober in Canada about their veteran Georgia pop-rock band, his big brother Ed is in Washington as part of the Grammys on the Hill Advocacy Day, which was meant to send a message as part of the need […]

'Sit down' showdown adds to an already raucous Alberta Legislature session

Calgary Herald

Getting the boot from the Alberta Legislature, in the manner of Tory leader Ric McIver this week, isn’t unheard of (unless you are a Tory — he may be the first in decades), but it’s just the latest incident in what has been a particularly wild government era. Beyond laments about increasingly bitter partisanship, the behaviour of our elected members of the […]

Calgary Herald

A Calgary woman is upset after claiming she was tossed out of a Calgary taxi cab this weekend, and nearly rejected by a second, because the small fare — she asked for six-block ride downtown because she was afraid of walking alone at night — wasn’t worth their time. Jenna Leniczek wrote about the incident on Facebook, saying it showed her […]

Ginger Snaps: How fear over teen violence almost killed John Fawcett's werewolf cult classic

Calgary Herald

It has been more than 16 years since it happened, but John Fawcett still sounds bewildered, and a little annoyed, about the strange forces that nearly derailed his werewolf film back in 1999. Producing an independent horror movie in Canada is an uphill battle at the best of times. But Fawcett said pre-production was further complicated when word […]

Breakenridge: Uber isn't the only company to find fault with city's ride-sharing bylaw

Calgary Herald

Last week, Ottawa became the latest Canadian city to legalize ride-sharing services like Uber. And while they aren’t the first to do so, they may very well be the first to actually have Uber operating legally, even though their bylaw takes effect Sept. 30. Of course, Alberta’s two largest cities have already brought in changes […]

Editorial: Southwest transitway is off course

Calgary Herald

If there’s any satisfaction to being proven right, the Ready to Engage group should be feeling very content. A report going to a city council committee Wednesday pegs the price tag at between $57 million and $66 million […]
