Calgary Herald

TransCanada Corp. has agreed to submit its $15.7-billion Energy East pipeline to more environmental scrutiny in Quebec, ending weeks of uncertainty after the province filed a court injunction against the project. Calgary-based TransCanada on Friday filed a project application notification as part of the environmental assessment process in Quebec, one of six provinces its proposed oil […]

Sam Maggs explores fangirl passion and real-life wonder women

Calgary Herald

To hear Sam Maggs tell it, she “didn’t stand a chance.” Her fate was predetermined. Geeky fandom was programmed into her DNA. “My parents were both really big nerds who saw Star Wars over 20 times in theatres,” said Maggs, in an interview from her home in Edmonton. ” They used to keep me home from school […]

Big shoes to fill: Waddling like a penguin or flying through the sky, Calgary Expo actors fearlessly take over iconic roles

Calgary Herald

Robin Lord Taylor can discuss any number of deeply psychological choices that go into his star-making turn as supervillain-in-the-making Oswald Cobblepot on Fox’s Gotham. But fans most often want to know about the walk. In the gloomy, pre-Batman series, Cobblepot has yet to morph into someone fans would recognize as the Penguin. Reinvented as a deeply damaged but ambitious young villain, Oswald’s journey from bullied, sad-sack […]

Ten years later, 'Runaway Devil' about to taste freedom

Calgary Herald

Freedom is looming for Canada’s youngest triple killer. It’s been 10 years since a 12-year-old Medicine Hat girl made headlines around the world by committing the most brutal crime known to society – the slaughter of her family. She recruited a boyfriend twice her age to help her carry out the stabbing deaths of her […]

Yedlin: TransAlta enters new era of uncertainty

Calgary Herald

TransAlta’s message to shareholders at Friday’s annual meeting could have borrowed a line from the Rolling Stones’ 1966 hit Mother’s Little Helper: “Things are different today …” In the coal-fired power world, that’s a gross understatement. As TransAlta chairman Gordon Giffin said in his opening remarks, no one could have predicted what’s taken place during […]

Zion National Park a hikers' paradise

Calgary Herald

At the end of Canyon Overlook Trail is a spectacular view of the red and white Navajo sandstone cliffs surrounding the main canyon of Utah’s Zion National Park. It’s one of the prettiest viewpoints in the park, and you don’t have to look long to realize why the canyon was so named. Isaac Behunin, the […]

Van Pelt and Clemens: Private schools save public money

Calgary Herald

By Deani Van Pelt and Jason Clemens While parents in Alberta have more choice for their children’s education than Canadians in most other provinces, that level of choice may soon be reduced by the current government in Edmonton. In response, Ric McIver, interim Progressive Conservative leader, recently tabled a private member’s motion asking the government to affirm […]

Editorial: Drug deaths call for action

Calgary Herald

If Albertans thought the worst of the opioid-abuse crisis was in the rear-view mirror after the horrific number of fentanyl overdoses that marked 2015, the first few months of 2016 are providing a sobering wake-up call.  It bears repeating that 270 deaths in Alberta were linked to the painkiller fentanyl last year. Go back to 2012, and that […]

French: We need a great public education system

Calgary Herald

By Joel French Re: “Choice in education,” Editorial, April 16. The editorial is an unconvincing attempt to defend the status quo in regard to government funding for private schools in Alberta, on the ideological grounds of parental choice. The editorial repeats the unsupported assertion that private schools save the public money because they don’t receive […]

Whittaker: City overlooks calls for tax relief

Calgary Herald

By John Whittaker When the City of Calgary recently asked Calgarians what they would like from City Hall, the public was clear: lower taxes. However, discussions at council suggest city hall still hasn’t received the message loud and clear. In January, the City of Calgary began soliciting the opinions of Calgarians on a wide range […]

Crowley: Why it's OK to sell our military equipment to Saudi Arabia

Calgary Herald

Rarely has the right decision been so ineptly defended. Critics have been ripping into the decision of the Trudeau government not merely to allow the export of Canadian-made light armoured vehicles (LAVs) to Saudi Arabia, but to have actually signed the export permits that made it possible. The ground for the attacks has been that […]

Your letters for Saturday, April 23

Calgary Herald

An absence of guidelines Re: “Acquitted,” April 22. I am very disturbed by the outcome of the Mike Duffy trial, not because he was vindicated of all charges, but because it shows how loose the Senate rules are on expenses. The judge described them as “broad” and “unorthodox.” The judge’s ruling revealed that there are […]

Stage West's Young Frankenstein a wildly comical reunion

Calgary Herald

In Stage West’s production of the Mel Brooks musical Young Frankenstein that runs at the dinner theatre until June 26, Ontario actor Kevin Dennis plays the sexually repressed science nerd Friedrich Frankenstein. Friedrich has disavowed any connection to his infamous grandfather, but fate has other plans for the reluctant re-animator. This wildly comic musical is […]

TransAlta looks at more hydro, not worried about Alberta buying B.C. power

Calgary Herald

TransAlta Corp. CEO Dawn Farrell says her company is examining its hydroelectric options as Alberta moves to shift away from coal-fired power toward more renewable energy sources. The head of the Calgary-based power company also said she isn’t concerned about a possible deal for the province to buy hydro-electricity from British Columbia while Alberta seeks an oil pipeline to the west coast. At the […]

The Wheaties lead the Eastern Conference final 1-0. The two teams will get right back at it Saturday night (6:30 p.m., Shaw TV, […]

Daughter charged with second-degree murder of her elderly mother in Lethbridge

Calgary Herald

Just a couple of weeks after a daughter stood in front of media to make a public plea for information about her mother’s killer, she’s been arrested and charged with the murder herself. Lethbridge police have charged 51-year-old Calgarian Lisa Freihaut with the second degree murder of Irene Carter. Two weeks ago at Calgary police headquarters, Freihaut fought through sobs and stared teary-eyed into camera lenses and said she needed to see the case closed so she and her family could start to heal.

Nenshi suggests city tested Uber screening process with criminals

Calgary Herald

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says he’d choose his words more carefully after video captured him describing Uber’s CEO as a “dick” and suggesting the city directed people — some of whom may be criminals — to test the rideshare company’s background screening process. The remarks emerged Friday in a recording of Nenshi catching a ride with a […]

Braid: The NDP starts spring cleaning of Progressive Conservatives

Calgary Herald

The great purge of Progressive Conservatives is in full cry, but the NDP isn’t being straight about its motives for this blowout of the old government’s lingering influence. Advanced Education Minister Marlin Schmidt, for instance, says partisan politics has nothing to do with the decision to make all board members of post-secondary schools reapply and go through a recruitment screening, if […]

Foothills FC giving players a chance to advance their soccer careers

Calgary Herald

It was only a year ago that Foothills FC was preparing to kick off for its first season in the Premier Development League. At the time, there were grand promises about providing a platform for young Albertan soccer players to show off their skills and a sense of optimism about their ability to pull it […]

Scott Cruickshank: Wacey Rabbit – more than just a colourful name

Calgary Herald

Lunch rush at the only McDonald’s in Kushiro, he heads to the back of a long line. People are staring. Who can blame them? Not only is Wacey Rabbit the lone foreigner on the premises, he happens to be sporting hockey equipment, including helmet and visor. He is also wearing a dimple-busting grin. (The moment, […]

Fortney: Defence Closes in Stephan Case: "All you need is one reasonable doubt"

Calgary Herald

It’s a job few people look forward to, with stories abounding in popular culture about the extraordinary measures some take to avoid it. Yet the role of a jurist in a democracy is an essential one, helping to ensure that such fundamental values as the presumption of innocence and reasonable doubt are given more than […]
