Who recognises the existence of a Palestinian state?

France24.com (en)

Spain's left-wing Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced plans to soon recognise a Palestinian state, breaking with other Western powers which have long argued this should only come as part of a negotiated peace with Israel. The Palestinians themselves have meanwhile relaunched a more-than-decade-old application to become a full member state of the United Nations. According to the Palestinian Authority, which rules parts of the occupied West Bank, 137 of the 193 UN members already recognise a Palestinian state. Читать дальше...

France24.com (en)

As the war in Gaza enters its six month – and more than 33,000 Palestinians have been killed – FRANCE 24 spoke to the Palestinian ambassador to the UK, Husam Zomlot. Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu "wants to have a perpetual war", Zomlot told FRANCE 24. The ambassador cited Netanyahu's "personal reasons" and also "strategic interests of his government and the Israeli establishment to finish off a job that started 76 years ago, which is the ethnic cleansing of Palestine".

UK judges, intelligence experts call for halt to Israeli arms sales

France24.com (en)

Three former Supreme Court justices have joined more than 600 members of the British legal profession in calling for the government to halt arms sales to Israel, saying it could make Britain complicit in genocide in Gaza. Their call was also backed by two of the country's leading intelligence experts, who argued that Britain needed to use any leverage it could to persuade Israel, and its biggest backer the United States, to change course in the conflict.

Kompany's focus on Everton not struggling Burnley's finances

France24.com (en)

The Clarets have announced losses of £27.9 million ($35.3 million, 32.5 million euros) for the year ending July 31, 2023, in their latest accounts following relegation at the end of the 2021/22 season. Burnley are currently six points from safety with seven games to play and a second relegation in three years would undoubtedly harm the northwest club's finances. Kompany when questioned what the club's losses would mean from a football perspective told reporters: "You're asking me this -- it's a... Читать дальше...

Water returns to Rome's Baths of Caracalla in reflecting pool

France24.com (en)

The pool, called "Lo Specchio" ("The Mirror"), measures 42 metres by 32 metres (138 feet by 105 feet), creating a sparkling surface for the reflection of the remains of one of antiquity's largest bath complexes. Cultural officials said they were not trying to recreate one of Caracalla's many baths, but rather to evoke the spirit of the site. "The return of water is not only a wonder for its own sake, a joy for the eyes and the spirit, but is meant to be a concrete symbol of reconnection with the ancient world," said Daniela Porro... France24.com (en)

Thirty years after the genocide against the Tutsis, over 1000 international arrest warrants issued by Kigali against the perpetrators of the killings are still awaiting resolution. Some suspects, like Fulgence Kayishema or Félicien Kabuga, have been found after decades on the run. But for many survivors, international justice is still too slow, even though several countries including France are collaborating with Kigali to track down and prosecute the fugitives. FRANCE 24’s Clément Di Roma report from Kigali.

Kuwait, under new emir, votes yet again

France24.com (en)

Elections have become an almost annual occurrence for the OPEC member country, which has seven percent of the world's oil reserves and the monarchical Gulf's most powerful elected assembly. However, the parliament's clashes with the royal-appointed cabinet have led to a cycle of stalemate, dissolution and fresh elections, delaying much-needed reforms. Almost 835,000 voters are eligible to choose 50 MPs from 200 candidates, including just 13 women, in only the second Kuwaiti election held during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Читать дальше...

Ferdinand warns Rashford may have to leave Man Utd to reignite career

France24.com (en)

The 26-year-old has scored just eight goals in 36 appearances for United so far this season -- a far cry from last term when he scored a career-best 30 goals for United. Rashford has also faced criticism over his off-field conduct. Reports in late January suggested Rashford had spent an evening at a Belfast nightclub before missing training with United. And United manager Erik ten Hag branded Rashford's decision to go to a separate nightclub event after October's 3-0 derby defeat by Manchester City "unacceptable". Читать дальше...
