Global diversified miner Glencore’s emissions and energy use increased in 2023, but the group continues to make strides in managing its operations sustainably and according to ever-evolving standards. Glencore’s total energy use last year was 202 PJ, compared with 194 PJ in 2022. Renewable energy sources delivered 5.4% of Glencore’s total energy needs in 2023, compared with 7.6% in 2022.

Aluminum prices should decline by at least 6% over the next six months as supply returns to the market and high interest rates continue to crimp manufacturing demand, according to an analyst from Trafigura Group, one of the biggest traders of the metal. “We’re looking at a very grim demand picture right now,” metals analyst Henry Van said at the CRU World Aluminum Conference in London on Wednesday. “It’s a fundamentally overdone rally.”

Chile will open calls by the end of July for lithium component producers to obtain preferential pricing on lithiumproduced by Albemarle through 2043, government officials said on Thursday. Albemarle and SQM are the two current lithium operators in Chile, and their contracts stipulate that a part of their output will be awarded at preferential prices ​​to companies that keep investment in Chile, the world's second largest lithium producer.

The Chilean Copper Commission (Cochilco) on Thursday raised its average copper price estimates for both this year and next. Cochilco now sees average copper prices this year at $4.30/lb, from $3.85/lb before. For next year, Cochilco estimates average copper prices around $4.25/lb, up from $3.90/lb before.
