The world’s top diversified miner BHP has made a third unsolicited conditional takeover proposal for smaller rival Anglo American on Wednesday, only hours before its initial deadline for a firm intention to make an offer expired. The board of London-listed Anglo American rejected the latest proposal of £29.34 a share, but agreed to a one-week extension to the 'put up, or shut up (PUSU)' deadline under UK Takeover rules.

South African state-owned asset manager the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) said on Wednesday that it would require a "meaningful revision" of BHP Group's bid for rival miner Anglo American. Anglo rebuffed BHP's initial $39-billion all-share proposal made on April 25, dismissing it as opportunistic. It subsequently rejected a revised offer of $43-billion saying the world's largest listed miner "continues to significantly undervalue" the company and that its difficult to execute.

Indian metals-to-oil conglomerate Vedanta's aluminium business will no longer add coal-fired capacity, its CEO said, in the company's biggest move yet toward renewable energy. Vedanta Aluminium, the country's biggest producer of the metal, aims to increase the share of renewable energy it is using to 30% by 2030 from nearly 5% now, John Slaven told Reuters in an interview.

BHP's bid for Anglo American underlines the growing appetite for energy transition metals like copper from miners who must become more aggressive to secure new projects or risk missing out, investors and mining CEOs said on Wednesday. The bid by the world's biggest listed miner for Anglo is expected to whet appetite for more deals in the sector whether it goes ahead or not, they said.

The Peruvian government's 2024 copper production goal of three-million metric tons is realistic, senior industry executives said on Tuesday, as the country seeks to boost mining investments to help lift the economy out of recession. The South American country produced 2.76-million tons of copper last year, dropping its rank from first to second for global production of the red metal. It still ranks first globally for export volumes.

Copper and gold company Solaris has decided against selling a minority stake to China’s Zijin Group, owing to concerns that the transaction – announced in January – would not meet Canada’s foreign investment standards within a reasonable timeframe. The transaction entailed Solaris’ selling a 15% stake to Zijin for C$130-million to support the development of the Warintza copper project, including the potential major purchase of an adjacent asset in Ecuador.
