High-resolution microscopy for analysis of protein complexes

Phys.org

Researchers at Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Berlin Institute of Health at Berlin's Charité Hospital have developed a novel method for determining the number of subunits within protein complexes. The method is a further development of "super-resolution" single molecule localization microscopy (SMLM), whose developers were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2014. The new technique allows researchers to analyze the composition of protein complexes in intact cells.

NASA's Webb catches fiery hourglass as new star forms

Phys.org

New details surrounding the dark cloud L1527 and its protostar have been revealed by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope. The nebula's vibrant colors, only visible in infrared light, show the protostar is in the midst of gathering material on its way to becoming a full-fledged star.

Singles study: More Midwesterners consider political issues in dating

Phys.org

A new study by the dating app Match in partnership with Indiana University researchers shows that political issues are increasingly important to singles in the Midwest when it comes to considering potential partners. According to the study, 29% of Midwestern singles consider not having an opinion on a key political issue a dealbreaker—up from just 15% in 2017.

This gun policy platform could help reduce gun violence by 28%, researchers say

Phys.org

It starts with a fairly simple premise: A majority of people, no matter which side of the political aisle they occupy, believe that someone with a history of violence should not be able to have a gun. This common ground between gun owners and non-gun owners is the basis for a policy platform proposed in a report out today from Tufts University School of Medicine experts, who led research into the topic, and 97percent, a bipartisan organization of gun owners and non-gun owners committed to reducing gun deaths.

Review of more than 1,000 articles seeks to understand how nanomaterials affect plants

Phys.org

Researchers at the University of São Paulo's Center for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture (CENA-USP) in Brazil, collaborating with colleagues in Canada, France, Italy and Spain, reviewed 1,154 original scientific articles published between 2009 and 2022 on the effects of nanomaterials in 1,374 plants belonging to 253 species. The metadata review assembled and organized quantitative information on the experimental parameters used in the scientific literature of the past decade.

Six years after 'the Blob' in the Santa Barbara Channel, researchers find lasting effects in the kelp forest

Phys.org

The nearshore rocky reefs of the Santa Barbara Channel are dynamic places, with populations of fish, mollusks, algae and other assorted sea life shifting in response to currents, storms and a variety of other conditions. They wax and wane, typically returning to some sort of baseline composition—a kind of standard demographic—after disturbances temporarily disrupt the neighborhood, and then subside.

Between light and darkness: How plants optimize photosynthesis under changing light conditions

Phys.org

For research, plants are frequently grown under stable lighting, which does not reflect natural conditions. In a series of experiments with changing light conditions, simulating the natural interplay of light and shadow, researchers from the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology in Potsdam-Golm (Germany) and the College of Natural Science at Michigan State University (U.S.) reveal the importance of two key proteins for the dynamic control of photosynthesis. The study was recently published in the journal New Phytologist.

Salt more important than cold polar temperatures in sea ice formation

Phys.org

When polar seas freeze and ice forms, it is not only due to cold air chilling the surface of the water. Even more important is that warm water is prevented from rising to the surface from the depths of the ocean, due to the much lower salinity of the surface water. Researchers from the University of Gothenburg and elsewhere have described this effect in a new scientific study.

Biologist discovers evidence for intentional communication in female putty-nosed monkeys

Phys.org

Female putty-nosed monkeys deliberately use alarm calls to recruit males to defend the group. This is the conclusion reached by Claudia Stephan, an evolutionary biologist at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), together with colleagues from the Wildlife Conservation Society after conducting observations in the Republic of the Congo.

Regulations can burden small businesses, but research shows they can also help them grow

Phys.org

A couple of weeks before her short stint as prime minister ended, Liz Truss delivered on a pledge to tackle what some—including Truss—saw as red tape holding back "thousands of growing businesses" in the UK. The move focused on exempting small businesses from certain regulations to help stimulate growth. It involved expanding the government's definition of "small business" to release "thousands of UK businesses" from reporting requirements and regulations.

Why the discovery of Cleopatra's tomb would rewrite history

Phys.org

It couldn't have been a case of better timing. Egyptologists celebrating the centenary of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, now have a promising new archaeological discovery that appears to have been made in Egypt. Excavators have discovered a tunnel under the Taposiris Magna temple, west of the ancient city of Alexandria, which they have suggested could lead to the tomb of Queen Cleopatra. Evidence that this is really the case remains to be seen, but such a discovery would be a major find... Читать дальше...

Global population hits 8 billion, but per-capita consumption is still the main problem

Phys.org

The world population has just hit a new record: 8 billion. As is often the case, there are heated debates about the planet's so-called "carrying capacity"—the total number of people who can live on Earth sustainably. Experts are generally divided into two camps. There are those who argue that we need to drastically reduce the human population to avoid ecological catastrophe. And then there are those who believe that technology will find smart solutions without any need to actively tackle the issue head-on.
