New York state lawyers and an attorney for former President Donald Trump have settled their differences over a $175 million bond that Trump posted to block the collection of a large civil fraud judgment while he pursues appeals. The agreement reached Monday cut short a potential day-long court hearing in Manhattan that was to feature witnesses. As part of a deal struck during a 20-minute recess, lawyers for Trump and Knight Specialty Insurance Company agreed to keep the money in a cash account that will gain interest but faces no downside risk.

Military scientists have identified the remains of an Army Air Forces pilot from Michigan who died during a World War II bombing mission in Southeast Asia. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency said Monday the remains of 2nd Lt. John E. McLauchlen Jr. of Detroit were identified in January. McLauchlen was the 25-year-old pilot of a B-24J Liberator bomber during a December 1943 bombing mission. The mission targeted a railroad yard in Myanmar, then known as Burma. Facing widespread unhappiness over its response to the Israel-Hamas war, the writers’ group PEN America has called off its annual awards ceremony. Dozens of nominees had dropped out of the event, which was to have taken place in New York next week. A $12 billion high-speed passenger rail line between Las Vegas and the Los Angeles area has started construction. Monday's ceremony in Las Vegas drew U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg along with local and Brightline West company officials. The company plans to have trains running by 2028 from just south of the Las Vegas Strip to a commuter rail hub in Rancho Cucamonga, California. The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to consider a request by Republican U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake to ban the use of electronic vote-counting machines in Arizona. Lake and former Republican secretary of state candidate Mark Finchem filed suit two years ago when they were running unsuccessfully for other offices, repeating unfounded allegations about the security of machines that count votes. The European Union is demanding TikTok provide more information about a new app that pays users to watch videos and warned that it could order the video sharing platform to suspend addictive features that pose a risk to kids. The 27-nation EU’s executive Commission said it was opening formal proceedings to determine whether TikTok breached the bloc’s new digital rules when it rolled out its TikTok Lite app in France and Spain. Express Inc. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, as the fashion retailer looks to sell the majority of its stores. Columbus, Ohio-based Express, which is also the parent of Bonbons and Upwest brands, is shuttering a handful of its operations in the process. In an announcement Monday, the company said it planned to close 95 of its Express stores and all UpWest stores. Lawyers for Armenia have asked the top U.N. court to throw out a case filed by Azerbaijan over the Karabakh region that accuses Armenia of ethnic cleansing. Monday's request comes after Azerbaijan launched proceedings at the International Court of Justice in 2021 in the case. Armenia is contesting the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice in this case. Supermarket chains Kroger and Albertsons say will sell more of their stores in an effort to quell the federal government’s concerns about their proposed merger. The companies said Monday they would now sell 579 Kroger and Albertsons stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers, a New Hampshire-based grocery company, for $2.9 billion. The moves at the two Ivy League schools came hours hours before the Jewish holiday of Passover was set to begin Monday evening.
