Mourners gathered Monday at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel in Chicago to remember 30-year-old officer Luis M. Huesca. The six-year veteran of the police department was just two days shy of his 31st birthday when he was slain. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a report last week that documented the first instances of HIV transmissions contracted through unsterile injections used while receiving “vampire facials,” cosmetic procedures involving microneedling. Three women were diagnosed with HIV after getting the services at an unlicensed medical spa in New Mexico. Consumers interested in receiving the services should be aware of the risks.

Police in North Carolina say numerous law enforcement officers conducting a task force operation have been struck by gunfire in Charlotte. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says officers from the U.S. Marshals Task Force were carrying out an investigation Monday afternoon in a suburban neighborhood when they came under fire. Police say multiple victims were taken to hospitals and a SWAT team was on the scene. Gunfire continued after the officers were struck. Many roads were closed for faster ambulance transport. A new study finds that last year’s snow deluge in California, which quickly erased a two decade long megadrought, was essentially a once-in-a-lifetime rescue from above. Don’t get used to it. Monday's study says with climate change the 2023 California snow bonanza, which was a record for snow on the ground on April 1, will be less likely in the future. Last year's heavy snow edged out 1922 for a statewide record. Researchers looked at how the big snows, the ones that happen once every 20 years or so, are getting smaller.

Jurors have heard all of the plaintiff's evidence in a landmark case seeking to hold the state of New Hampshire accountable for abuse at its youth detention center. The last witness called Monday was a former teacher who said she reported suspicious bruises on David Meehan and half a dozen teens in the 1990s. Meehan sued the state in 2020. The Supreme Court will hear an appeal from a Vista, California, CBD hemp oil company fighting a lawsuit from a truck driver who says he got fired after using a product falsely advertised as being free from the active ingredient in marijuana. The court agreed Monday to hear the appeal from Medical Marijuana, Inc., which disputes the claims and says the trucker can't file under a federal law that allows people to collect larger damages if they win. There were many people doing double takes Sunday in North Bend, Washington, after four zebras got loose from their trailer and galloped into a neighborhood. The Washington State Patrol said the zebras were being transported in a trailer, and the driver pulled off Interstate 90 at the North Bend exit to secure the trailer. Somehow the zebras got loose, and trotted past brunch patrons at a restaurant and wound up in a backyard. KING-TV reports that's where two were captured with the help of rodeo professionals. The sea off New England, already warming faster than most of the world’s oceans, had one of its hottest years on record in 2023. The Gulf of Maine, a chunk of ocean that abutts New England and Canada, had an annual sea surface temperature nearly 2 degrees Fahrenheit above normal last year, scientists with the Portland, Maine-based Gulf of Maine Research Institute said Monday. The institute said it was the fifth warmest year on record for the Gulf of Maine, a body of water critical to commercial fishing and other maritime industries.

An upstate New York district attorney has apologized after police video showed her cursing at an officer who tried to give her a speeding ticket. Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley said she was sorry for the April 22 incident in which he refused to cooperate with Police Officer Cameron Crisafulli's attempt to ticket her for driving 20 mph over the speed limit. Ecuador’s Foreign Minister says it filed a complaint against Mexico’s government at the United Nations’ top court over the decision to grant political asylum to a former Ecuadorian vice president, which led to a highly criticized raid on the Mexican Embassy. Oregon authorities are set to reveal the winner of the $1.3 billion Powerball jackpot. The Oregon Lottery says it will identify the person Monday afternoon. The winning Powerball ticket was sold at a Plaid Pantry convenience store in Portland in early April. The winner had contacted the Oregon Lottery to claim the prize.
