Ted Cruz's office refused to open its doors to Muslim constituents on Muslim Advocacy Day

The Week

Of the 215 congressional offices that opened their doors on Monday to meet with Muslims and representatives of the U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations, Ted Cruz's office was not one. Despite his constituents' repeated requests to arrange a meeting for Muslim Advocacy Day, all 14 who traveled to Capitol Hill from Texas were turned away, The Intercept reports.

The country's biggest health insurer just pulled out of most ObamaCare markets

The Week

UnitedHealth Group, the largest U.S. health insurer, announced Tuesday that as of 2017 it would minimize its active participation in Affordable Care Act insurance exchanges to just a "handful" of the 34 states where it currently offers individual plans. The company warned in November that this may happen as the market ended up being smaller and financially riskier than anticipated. CEO Stephen Hemsley forecasted in an earnings call Tuesday that 2016's expected losses on exchanges are now up from $125 million to $650 million. Читать дальше...

It's hardest to change your political party in New York

The Week

New York State has closed presidential primaries (which isn't that unusual) and it required all party voter registrations to be submitted by October 9, a whopping 193 days before the primary elections today. And that is unusual — so unusual, in fact, that it confers on New York the dubious honor of having the most difficult party change rules of any state in the nation.

The majority of Americans don't want to vote for Cruz, Trump, or Clinton

The Week

The spring stretch of the presidential season is rough. The news cycle has revolved around the candidates for more than a year now. With the conventions around the corner, all the players are beginning to throw some elbows and fight a little dirty. It is unsurprising, then, that politics-weary Americans are beginning to get a little jaded, The Washington Post reports.

Joe Biden admits he's 'not comfortable with goofy Uncle Joe' persona

The Week

Vice President Joe Biden says the being perceived as "Goofy Uncle Joe" is exactly the reason he almost didn't take the VP job in the first place. "I'm not comfortable with Goofy Uncle Joe," Biden said in a recent interview with CNBC's John Harwood, commiserating with the long line of vice presidents before him who have gotten bad raps. "But one of the things that's important to know — and one of the reasons why, when I first got asked about this job I said no — is there is no inherent power in being vice president."

The daily business briefing: April 19, 2016

The Week

1.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average on Monday jumped by more than 100 points to close above 18,000 for the first time since July. Stocks shook off an early decline blamed on a drop in oil prices following the failure of major oil producers to agree to a production freeze on Sunday at a meeting in Qatar. Health care and consumer discretionary stocks were among the big gainers. Global stocks rose early Tuesday as oil stocks shrugged off the bad news from Qatar.

The time Donald Trump tried to evict an entire building of rent-controlled tenants — and lost

The Week

In 1981, Donald Trump bought two adjacent buildings on Central Park South for $13 million, and a few years later, he tried to evict the tenants of one of the buildings, 100 Central Park South (now called Trump Parc East). That's partly because he wanted to replace the two buildings with luxury high-rise condos, but also because most of his tenants were paying ridiculously low rent in the rent-controlled building, The New York Times reports, focusing on Madelyn Rubinstein, whose rent was $93.08 a month ... Michigan governor vows to drink Flint water for the next 30 days

The Week

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is taking Flint residents up on their challenge to go ahead and drink their water if he thinks it's so safe again. For at least the next 30 days, Snyder says he and his wife will be drinking filtered Flint tap water to "alleviate some of the skepticism and mistrust" surrounding his suggestion that Flint residents start using less bottled water and more tap water.

10 things you need to know today: April 19, 2016

The Week

1.

New Yorkers vote in their state's critical presidential primaries on Tuesday. The frontrunners, Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton, are entering the contest with double-digit polling leads, and both need decisive victories. Trump needs 50 percent of the vote across the state to prevent Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Sen. Ted Cruz from getting some of New York's 95 delegates. Clinton is hoping a big win will douse Sen. Bernie Sanders' claim that his recent winning streak... Читать дальше...

Ben and Jerry — of ice cream fame — arrested at U.S. Capitol

The Week

Among the approximately 300 people arrested at the U.S. Capitol on Monday for "unlawful demonstrations" was a pair of Vermonters whose names might make me scream, you scream, or us all scream for ice cream. Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield — the co-founders of Ben & Jerry's ice cream — were given the reprimand while participating in the Democracy Awakening protests, CNN reports.

Samantha Bee runs head-on into an unshakable wall of Bernie Sanders optimism

The Week

"You know, it's easy for dried-up old crones like me to dismiss Bernie fans as naive kids who believe in wizards and unicorns — sometimes too easy," Samantha Bee said on Monday night's Full Frontal. "But I wanted to hear from actual Sanders supporters themselves." So she gathered an "impossibly diverse panel" of Sanders fans in a Greenwich Village folk music club and had a heart-to-heart — with herself as much as the Sanders admirers. "I'm not here to bash Bernie," Bee said. "I'm just here to understand your optimism... Читать дальше...

Stephen Colbert notes that Bernie Sanders said a (very clean) dirty word last week

The Week

The Late Show was on hiatus last week, but on Monday, Stephen Colbert took a brief look back at last Thursday's feisty Democratic debate, focusing on one moment in particular. "The subject that really stood out to me was when Bernie Sanders talked about his ideas on energy policy," he said — but when you see the clip, and Sanders talking about "what you do do" with nuclear and nonrenewable power, you can probably guess where Colbert is going. And with a little creative editing of archival footage... Читать дальше...

How a 26-year-old white women died a horrible death in an American jail

The Week

American jails are a hellscape of abuse, medical neglect, and preventable suicide. And because they house those who have been arrested but not convicted or sentenced, very often its the legally innocent who suffer. Mass incarceration is slowly fading — but without serious jail reform, abuses will continue to pile up even as fewer people are going through the jail system.
