New York State has closed presidential primaries (which isn't that unusual) and it required all party voter registrations to be submitted by October 9, a whopping 193 days before the primary elections today. And that is unusual — so unusual, in fact, that it confers on New York the dubious honor of having the most difficult party change rules of any state in the nation.

The spring stretch of the presidential season is rough. The news cycle has revolved around the candidates for more than a year now. With the conventions around the corner, all the players are beginning to throw some elbows and fight a little dirty. John Kasich's chance of winning the Republican nomination is so slim that Donald Trump hasn't even deigned to give him a nickname. And while Kasich has been his usually optimistic self over the course of the last few weeks, it seems as if comments about his brutal losing streak are finally beginning to get under his skin.

Before polls opened for New York's primary, Hillary Clinton campaign spokesman Brian Fallon offered a very cautiously optimistic forecast for the results in an interview on CNN. "I think the margin will be a little tighter than people expect," Fallon said.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average on Monday jumped by more than 100 points to close above 18,000 for the first time since July. Stocks shook off an early decline blamed on a drop in oil prices following the failure of major oil producers to agree to a production freeze on Sunday at a meeting in Qatar. Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is taking Flint residents up on their challenge to go ahead and drink their water if he thinks it's so safe again. For at least the next 30 days, Snyder says he and his wife will be drinking filtered Flint tap water to "alleviate some of the skepticism and mistrust" surrounding his suggestion that Flint residents start using less bottled water and more tap water.
