Momofuku backs down from defending its 'chile crunch' trademark after outcry by small businesses

Times Union

Momofuku, a food and restaurant brand started by chef David Chang, says it won’t defend its trademark on the name “chile crunch” after it sparked an outcry by sending cease-and-desist letters to other businesses using the term. Momofuku started selling its Chili Crunch product in 2020, a crunchy spicy oil with dried peppers and other ingredients like sesame seeds and garlic. It’s a riff on Chinese condiment chili crisp and other similar products from other countries. Momofuku acquired the trademark... Читать дальше...

Will Biden be on the ballot in Ohio and Alabama? That's up to Republicans

Times Union

Democratic President Joe Biden’s campaign is wrangling with Republican-dominated state governments in Ohio and Alabama to assure he is listed on their fall ballots. Both states' certification deadlines precede the Democrats' August national convention. Biden campaign lawyers have asked their election chiefs to accept provisional certification until his nomination can be formalized. Alabama's secretary of state says he lacks legal authority to do that. His Ohio counterpart says the Republican-led Legislature needs to approve an extension. Читать дальше...

Bird flu is spreading to more farm animals. Are milk and eggs safe?

Times Union

A bird flu outbreak in U.S. dairy cows has spread to more than two dozen herds in eight states. That comes weeks after the nation’s largest egg producer found the virus in its chickens. Health officials continue to stress that the risk to the public is low and that the U.S. food supply remains safe and stable. Commercial milk remains safe and available because pasteurization, a high heat treatment, kills bacteria and viruses. But there's limited information about possible transmission of the virus in unpasteurized milk or cheese products. Читать дальше...

Iran's Revolutionary Guard seizes a container ship near Strait of Hormuz amid tensions with West

Times Union

Commandos from Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard have rappelled down onto a container ship near the Strait of Hormuz and seized the vessel. Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency acknowledged the seizure after a video seen by The Associated Press showed the commandos raiding the ship Saturday, an attack a Mideast defense official attributed to Iran amid wider tensions between Tehran and the West. The video showed the attack earlier reported by the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations... Читать дальше...

Ten years later, Cliven Bundy and his family are still grazing cattle on disputed southern Nevada rangeland where armed protesters and federal agents stared each other down through rifle sights. Hundreds took part in the tense showdown near Bunkerville before the government backed off. Nineteen people were later arrested and spent time in jail awaiting trials, but no family members were convicted of a crime. Today, the federal Bureau of Land Management remains tight-lipped and stays away from property including Gold Butte National Monument. Читать дальше...

How O.J. Simpson burned the Ford Bronco into America's collective memory

Times Union

O.J. Simpson has died. But his time in a white Ford Bronco during a slow-moving police pursuit on the Los Angeles freeways 30 years ago still burns bright in the nation’s cultural memory. The Bronco — or at least that Bronco — has become one of America’s most iconic automobiles. It now sits in a crime museum in Tennessee. White Ford Bronco is also the name of a band that plays 1990s cover songs. Marcus Collins is a University of Michigan marketing professor who says footage of the 1994 police pursuit... Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma says 31-year-old Katherine Altagracia Guerrero De Aguasvias was attacked and kidnapped at gunpoint Thursday afternoon at an intersection northeast of Orlando. Some fear University of Michigan proposed policy on protests could quell free speech efforts

Times Union

A University of Michigan proposal aimed at deterring disruptions on its Ann Arbor campus after anti-Israel protesters interrupted an honors convocation is sparking backlash from free speech advocates. Violations of the policy could result in suspension or expulsion for students and termination for university staff. The policy has yet to be implemented. The March 24 protest by groups calling for the school to divest from companies linked to Israel is among several demonstrations on college campuses across the United States. Читать дальше...

Texas' diversity, equity and inclusion ban has led to more than 100 job cuts at state universities

Times Union

Texas' ban on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in higher education has resulted in more than 100 job cuts at University of Texas campuses across the state. The losses echo or anticipate the potential impact of similar bans in other Republican-controlled states. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed a law last year prohibiting DEI initiatives on campuses, such as special centers for minority students. Universities across the Lone Star State rushed to make changes to comply with the new law, which took effect on Jan. Читать дальше...

Far fewer young Americans now want to study in China, something both countries are trying to fix

Times Union

The imbalance in the U.S.-China relationship extends beyond trade to the world of higher education. These days, only about 700 American students are studying at Chinese universities, down from a peak of almost 25,000 a decade ago, while there are nearly 300,000 Chinese students at U.S. schools. China’s pandemic policies and restrictions on academic freedom offer some explanation for the decline. Whatever the reasons, U.S. officials and scholars bemoan lost opportunities for young people to experience... Читать дальше...

How a hush money scandal tied to a porn star led to Trump’s first criminal trial

Times Union

It was the kind of tawdry tale Donald Trump might’ve shrugged off before his life in politics: a porn actress claiming they’d had sex. But on the eve of the 2016 presidential election, Trump feared the story would cost him votes. So, prosecutors say he arranged to pay Stormy Daniels to keep quiet. Now, Trump is set to stand trial Monday in New York on state charges related to the very sex scandal that he and his aides strove to hide. Barring a last-minute delay, it will be the first of Trump’s four criminal cases to go to trial. Читать дальше...

Argentina's populist president meets billionaire Elon Musk in Texas — and a bromance is born

Times Union

Tech executive Elon Musk and Argentine President Javier Milei have sealed their budding bromance at a Tesla electric car factory in Texas — their first meeting after months of mutual admiration on social media. In posts that thrilled their right-wing fans, the pair played up their real-life friendship on Friday. The meeting was closed to the press and the statement from Milei’s office produced little news, saying the free-market enthusiasts discussed a range of issues, including how to promote investment... Judge refuses to dismiss Hunter Biden's gun case, rejecting claim it's politically motivated

Times Union

A federal judge in Delaware has refused to throw out a federal gun case against Hunter Biden, rejecting the president’s son’s claim that he is being prosecuted for political purposes as well as other arguments. U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika’s ruling increases the prospect that Biden could face trial in the case as early as June, in the midst of his father’s reelection campaign. His efforts to scuttle the other criminal case he faces in California involving tax allegations have also failed. Читать дальше...

Читать дальше...

Faced with possibly paying for news, Google removes links to California news sites for some users

Times Union

Google is removing California news websites from some users' search results. The move is widely seen as a protest over pending legislation requiring the search giant and other tech companies to pay news organizations for linking to their content. Google calls it a “short-term test” and says it also would pause new investments in the California news industry. Supporters of the bill say it would provide a “lifeline” to local news organizations that have struggled to stay afloat in the digital era.... Читать дальше...

The widely shared moment was days in the making, with many close to Trump and activists praising the moment as a successfully engineered event highlighting his potential growth with Black voters. The moment, however, frustrated many... Читать дальше...
