A National Public Radio editor who wrote a critical essay saying that his company had become intolerant of all but liberal views has resigned. Uri Berliner, an editor on NPR's business desk, posted his resignation letter on social media. A day earlier, NPR reported that Berliner had been suspended for five days without pay for violating company rules about writing for an outside organization without permission. Japan recorded a trade deficit for the third straight fiscal year as the costs of energy and other imports rose and the yen remained weak. The data released Wednesday showed the deficit was $38 billion for the fiscal year that ended in March. The biggest trade deficits were in the Middle East, mainly Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, as well as Australia and Indonesia. Officails say the planned closure of a federal women’s prison in California notorious for staff-on-inmate sexual abuse won’t happen before each inmate’s status is reviewed. The Bureau of Prison’s announced Monday that FCI Dublin would be shut down. Meanwhile, a judge has ordered an accounting of the casework for all 605 women held at the main lockup and its adjacent minimum-security camp. A Tennessee judge will soon decide whether the journals of a Nashville school shooter can be released to the public, after nearly a year of legal wrangling over who can participate in the case. Nashville police have said they will release the records once their investigation is complete. A group that includes news outlets and a state senator want the records released immediately. Eighty-one-year-old William Brock also faces counts of kidnapping and felonious assault in the indictment handed up Monday by a Clark County grand jury. Court documents did not list an attorney for him and a telephone number for Brock couldn't be located. He has pleaded not guilty and could face a life sentence if convicted on the murder charge.
