Dakar — The death toll amid protests in Senegal over the postponement of the presidential election until December has climbed to three, as concerns grow that one of the remaining democracies in coup-hit West Africa is under threat.  The announcement of the delay just three weeks ahead of the planned Feb. 25 vote triggered violent clashes on Friday between protesters and police in Dakar and several other cities, in a wave of unrest that many fear will spill over into protracted instability.  President... Voice of America

Bangkok — Myanmar’s military regime has undertaken a major expansion of the country’s prison system since toppling an elected government three years ago, according to new analysis of satellite data, amid a bloody civil war and crackdown on pro-democracy activists. Rights groups fear the expansion portends more arbitrary arrests, prisoner abuse and forced labor. By scouring open-source satellite images from the months leading up to the February 2021 coup through last month, Myanmar Witness, a... Читать дальше...

The Election Commission website showed a group of independent candidates, almost all nominated by Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, or PTI, claiming 101 seats in the 266-member legislative lower house of Parliament. They were followed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, or PML-N, led by another former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif. Читать дальше...

Thousands of Iranians marched through major streets and squares decorated with flags, balloons and banners with revolutionary and religious slogans. Iraq Has Complicated Relationship with Groups Clashing with US Forces

Voice of America

BEIRUT — A U.S. strike in Baghdad that killed a commander of the powerful Kataib Hezbollah paramilitary group this week highlighted the ambiguous status of the country's Iran-allied armed factions. Some operate simultaneously as a part of the official security forces and outside of state control. That has put the government of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani in an increasingly delicate position as it attempts to balance between its relations with the United States and with Iraqi armed groups... Voice of America

SHANGHAI — Yuwei Zhangzou represents a new type of Chinese tourist. Last month, the Shanghai-based fashion influencer had close encounters with reindeer, visited Santa's village and stayed in a glass-enclosed treehouse during a trip that she organized herself to Finland. Very little shopping was involved. "I was hoping to get lucky and see the Northern Lights and I got it! I was happy," she said. As Chinese travelers gear up for the Lunar New Year holiday, which this year runs from February 10-17... Читать дальше...

Dakar, Senegal — Tuareg separatists announced Saturday the lifting of blockades they'd set up in December on main roads throughout northern Mali after the national army took back several towns.   "All blockades on the routes from the Algerian border to the towns of Timbuktu and Gao have been lifted," the Permanent Strategic Framework, an alliance of rebel forces, told Agence France-Presse, without giving more details.  The Taureg-dominated rebel groups lost control of several localities in the... Facing Setbacks From Rebels, Myanmar Activates Conscription Law

Voice of America

bangkok — Myanmar's military government on Saturday activated for the first time a decade-old conscription law that makes young men and women subject to at least two years of military service if called up, effective immediately. The announcement of the measure on state television amounts to a major, though tacit, admission that the army is struggling to contain the nationwide armed resistance against its rule.  Under the 2010 People's Military Service Law, passed under a previous military government...
