RIO DE JANEIRO — At least eight people died in Rio de Janeiro state because of landslides and floods caused by heavy rains Thursday, Brazilian authorities said. A 6-year-old was listed as missing in the countryside city of Mendes. Four of the dead, including an 8-month-old, were members of the same family in the city of Barra do Pirai, officials said. NAIROBI, KENYA — Marathon world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum, who was killed this month along with his coach Gervais Hakizimana in a car crash, was buried Friday in his hometown of Chepkorio in western Kenya. Mourners remembered Kiptum as a humble, talented and hardworking athlete. RICHMOND, VIRGINIA — Four foreign nationals were arrested and charged Thursday with transporting suspected Iranian-made weapons on a vessel intercepted by U.S. naval forces in the Arabian Sea last month. Two Navy SEALs died during the mission. The criminal complaint unsealed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Richmond alleges that the four defendants — who were all carrying Pakistani identification cards — were transporting suspected Iranian-made missile components for the type of weapons used by Houthi rebel forces in recent attacks. WASHINGTON — The U.S. military said on Friday it had destroyed Houthi drones and anti-ship cruise missiles in Yemen and the Red Sea after determining they presented an imminent threat to merchant vessels and U.S. Navy ships. The strikes hit four drones and two cruise missiles that were prepared to launch from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen toward the Red Sea, the military's Central Command said.   The military also shot down three Houthi one-way attack drones near commercial ships operating in the Red Sea, it said. VALENCIA, SPAIN — A fire engulfed two residential buildings in the eastern Spanish city of Valencia on Thursday, killing four people and leaving 19 others missing hours after the blaze started, authorities said. Firefighters rushed to the scene on the outskirts of the city center as flames burst from windows of the 14-story residential building where the blaze apparently started.
