A new image hints at a character returning to the MCU for a cameo in the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. The festive television film is written and directed by James Gunn and will be released in December 2022 on Disney+. The Holiday Special will bring back Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldaña (Gamora), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Dave Bautista (Drax), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), and Pom Klementieff (Mantis) to tell a story that leads into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) introduced audiences to the relatively unknown group of unlikely heroes and showcased a vastly different world unseen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe up to that point. The film is full of small details and cameos that only fans with more than a cursory knowledge of Marvel Comics will catch. This includes the cameo of Cosmo the Spacedog, the Russian astronaut dog in the Collector's (Benecio Del Toro) museum on the Knowhere mining colony. After growling at Rocket, the Labrador was released following an explosion by the Power Stone, later licking the Collector's face to the disgust of Howard the Duck.
James Gunn recently took to Twitter to share one of the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special end-of-production wrap gifts that Marvel Studios gave the cast and crew. The present contained ornaments with images of Drax, Groot, Kraglin (Sean Gunn), Mantis, Nebula, Star-Lord, and Rocket. Also included was an ornament with Cosmo the Spacedog sporting a red bowtie, reindeer antlers, and a Rudolph-like red nose, hinting at a possible appearance in the upcoming television special. In the comics, Cosmo was part of a space experiment by the Soviet Union in the 1960s. After being launched into orbit, the dog was lost and drifted to the mining colony of Knowhere. During his travels through space, he was hit with unknown cosmic rays and gained telepathic and telekinetic powers. Story details for the upcoming holiday special have been kept tightly under wraps but Gunn has previously stated that new characters will be introduced.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will be a television event not to be missed as it is considered a story within the official MCU canon that leads directly into the Guardians' adventures in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. What role Cosmo will play remains to be seen but due to the unique nature of the television special, as well as being included amongst the Guardians of the Galaxy in Gunn's wrap gift, it is possible that the dog may play a significant part in the upcoming adventure.
