A Powerful Batman Villain's Weakness is So Simple Even You Can Beat Them
After this powerful Batman villain had a run-in with Batgirl, the hero discovered that the criminal had a weakness that makes them easy to defeat.
One of the most powerful Batman villains is unarguably Poison Ivy as her influence over all plant life on earth grants her nearly godlike powers, but her weakness is so simple—anyone could beat her. Poison Ivy has made it clear throughout her comic book career that she prefers the company of plants over that of people. Unfortunately, her love of greenery is also her greatest weakness, something Batgirl takes complete advantage of during one of their encounters.
Dr. Pamela Isley was a botanist who became Poison Ivy after an experiment went wrong, giving her the ability to communicate with and control plants. Once she obtained her powers, Ivy became an eco-terrorist who would oftentimes kidnap, murder, or otherwise harm people who put the environment in danger, especially in regard to big corporations who would do so just to make a profit. In the past, Batman has been able to defeat Poison Ivy by using some of her more established weaknesses including extreme cold temperatures and vulnerability to darkness. However, when Batgirl goes head-to-head with Poison Ivy, she discovers a different (and much easier) way to take the villain down.
In "Batgirl: Day One" (Batman Adventures #12) by Kelley Puckett and Mike Parobeck, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy crash a party to kidnap the daughter of the head of a corporation responsible for horrific crimes against the environment. The girl the villains intended on kidnapping, Sandy, was in a back room at the party venue being watched over by security guards. Thinking there may be trouble afoot, Batgirl, who is also in attendance, goes to check on her when all of a sudden, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy break through security and make their way to Sandy’s location, sparking Batgirl to jump into action. After she quickly incapacitates Harley Quinn, Batgirl grabs a potted plant that was placed nearby for decoration, and threatens to smash it on the ground unless Poison Ivy surrenders. While Ivy scolds her for putting an innocent plant’s life in danger over their conflict, she doesn’t back off, so Batgirl throws the plant and Poison Ivy dives to catch it. Once Ivy let her guard down, Batgirl was able to get to Sandy before her, effectively foiling her plot.
While Poison Ivy can control plants and use them to take down even the strongest of foes, through the use of force or by manipulating the many poisons and toxins they offer, it seems as though she cares a bit too much for them rather than just using them to accomplish her goals. Ivy is connected to all plant life so it makes sense that she would want to defend it against humans who regularly harm the environment as plants have no way of defending themselves. However, as shown in this comic, her love of plants can be used against her which leaves Poison Ivy at a huge disadvantage to her enemies. While it used to take exposing her to the bitter cold or engulfing her in complete darkness to neutralize Poison Ivy as a threat, now all it takes is a small plant a hero doesn’t mind destroying to take the villain down.
If Ivy completely loses her focus anytime one of her foes threatens the life of an average house plant as she did in this issue, then she leaves herself completely vulnerable to attack. Poison Ivy values plant life way more than that of any human, but virtually no one else in the world feels that way, including superheroes like Batgirl, so they won’t think twice about smashing a potted plant to stop Poison Ivy from pulling off any life-threatening villainy, making this Batman villain way too easy to defeat.
