Sudan violence 'verging on pure evil,' UN warns

France24.com (en)

"We keep saying that the situation is horrific and grim. But frankly, we are running out of words to describe the horror of what is happening in Sudan," said Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the UN humanitarian coordinator for Sudan. "We continue to receive unrelenting and appalling reports of sexual and gender-based violence, enforced disappearance, arbitrary detentions and grave violations of human and children's rights," she told reporters. "What is happening is verging on pure evil," she said, citing... Читать дальше...

Despair in Gaza City hospitals encircled by fighting

France24.com (en)

"We need help from the international community, people are dying here due to lack of treatment," said Atef, who has taken refuge at Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, surrounded by patients on trolleys. The hospital was hit earlier on Friday by an Israeli strike, the facility's director and Gaza's Hamas government said, with the latter giving a death toll of 13. The Israeli military has denied bombing hospitals. Gaza resident Hanane, whose wounded daughter is being treated at Shifa, said that with each explosion his "daughter starts shaking". Survivor recalls watching Israel festival massacre from atop a tree

France24.com (en)

But excitement would soon give way to horror. The two-day festival in the fields around Kibbutz Reim, just beyond the Gaza border in southern Israel, drew more than 3,000 people on October 6 and 7. Nearly one in 10 people would never come back. Balas scrolled through his last photos from the party, showing his friends giving a thumbs up and the festival in full force. It was 6:00 am (0400 GMT) and the young Israeli and his friends were enveloped in the ecstatic fog of the party. "Sunrise is the moment everyone waits for. Читать дальше...

Mariam Abu Daqqa, 72, is a leading member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) which is considered a "terrorist" organisation by the European Union. Abu Daqqa was detained by police on Wednesday night after the State Council, France's highest administrative court, overturned a lower court ruling that had suspended an interior ministry expulsion order. Abu Daqqa had a 50 day visa to visit France to take part in conferences on the Middle East conflict. The ministry said that... Читать дальше...

'Stubborn' Bavuma in South Africa World Cup injury worry

France24.com (en)

Bavuma made 23 as his team completed their group campaign with a five-wicket win over Afghanistan in Ahmedabad. "My leg is sore. I don't know the extent of it yet but I'll have to be fine. I am stubborn, it will have to be fine," said the 33-year-old Bavuma. With a semi-final looming against five-time champions Australia next week Bavuma insists he needs to be at the heart of the action as South Africa stand just two wins away from a maiden World Cup triumph. "I could have not batted, but I want... Читать дальше...

Gaza City in ruins as residents flee urban warfare

France24.com (en)

Heavy gunfire, explosions and the buzz of Israeli military drones could be heard as night fell over Gaza City, where the only glow of light comes from Al-Shifa hospital, which is overwhelmed with casualties. "I wasn't optimistic that any of my children or I would come out unharmed, given the intensity of the bombing and gunfire," said resident Jawad Haruda. He described his journey fleeing the coastal Shati refugee camp as a "tragedy". The Israeli military said its troops have reached the heart of the city... Читать дальше...

Afghanistan 'future's bright' after memorable World Cup

France24.com (en)

Afghanistan's campaign finished in a five-wicket loss to South Africa which ended their slim hopes of making the semi-finals. Needing to win the game by a mammoth 438 runs to stay in contention, Afghanistan were 244 all out with Azmatullah Omarzai top scoring on 97 before the Proteas, already assured of a semi-final place, chased down the target with 15 balls to spare. But the team, led by Hashmatullah Shahidi, had definite highs in the tournament with two of their four wins coming against defending... Читать дальше...

Olmert said Israel should offer to "start negotiations" on a two-state solution with the Palestinian Authority immediately after conclusion of the war. He also claimed that no Arab country would agree to replace the Israeli army in Gaza after the war... Читать дальше...

Yemen's Huthi rebels seek legitimacy with Israel attacks, analysts say

France24.com (en)

A series of launches over most of the Arabian Peninsula targeting Israel from war-torn, impoverished Yemen have either been shot down by missile defences or fallen short. However, experts say the Huthis, who seized the capital Sanaa in 2014 and control much of country, have a different goal in mind: regional and domestic legitimacy. "The group seeks strategic objectives through their involvement in a regional conflict, including securing political influence in Yemen and the broader region," Mohammed Albasha... Читать дальше...

In the city -- long-considered a hotbed of militancy -- 14 people were killed in the fighting on Thursday, according to the Palestinian health ministry. After a day of running battles between masked gunmen and Israeli forces in armoured personnel carriers, the streets were pockmarked with holes and strewn with bullet casings. From homes and hospital morgues, the bodies of 10 of the victims were carried on stretchers by dozens of masked militants firing guns in the air. "We don't live like the rest of the people," said Hayat Amorri... Читать дальше...

The British star won all three of his Grand Slam titles in his first two spells with Lendl and they reunited again in March last year. But although the Scot regained his place in the top 50 after years of battling to overcome hip problems, he has not achieved the results he wanted, particularly at the biggest tournaments. "Ivan has been by my side at the biggest moments in my career and I can't thank him enough for all that he's helped me achieve," said Murray, 36. "He's a unique character who... Читать дальше...

US military buildup off Israeli coast requires balancing act between deterrence and escalation

France24.com (en)

US warplanes conducted air strikes on a weapons storage facility in Syria used by Iran-backed militants on November 8 in retaliation for the growing number of attacks on US military interests in the region, the second such strikes in less than two weeks. The strikes illustrate the delicate balancing act of the US, which aims to protect its interests in the region without further aggravating the war between Israel and Hamas that risks escalating into a regional confrontation.

'War against residents of Gaza': Seen as collateral damage, 'vast majority nothing to do with Hamas'

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday that “far too many” Palestinians have died and suffered as Israel wages a relentless war against the militant Hamas group in the Gaza Strip. He urged Israel to minimize harm to civilians and maximize humanitarian assistance that reaches them. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Blinken said recent Israeli moves to improve dire conditions in Gaza as its military pushes deeper into the strip — including pauses in military operations to allow Palestinians... Ten Hag 'not happy' with Rashford's form at Man Utd

France24.com (en)

Rashford's disputed red card in Copenhagen on Wednesday contributed to a dramatic United collapse as they blew a 2-0 lead and conceded two late goals to lose 4-3, dropping to the bottom of Group A in the Champions League with two games left. Gareth Southgate kept faith with the 26-year-old by naming him in his England squad on Thursday, but a player who scored 30 goals for United in all competitions last season has only one from 15 appearances for the club this term. "I think he's not happy, we... Читать дальше...
