What we know so far about surging respiratory illnesses in China

France24.com (en)

However Chinese health authorities have said the rising infections are a mix of already known viruses and are linked to the country's first full cold season after strict Covid restrictions were lifted last December. And while emphasising that the full situation remains unclear, experts say there is little to suggest the cases were caused by a new virus. Here is what we know so far. What and where? On November 13, China's National Health Commission reported a surge of respiratory illnesses, mostly in children. Читать дальше...

Relief in Netherlands as 'escaped' mamba never left home

Tilburg has been on edge since Monday when the serpent's owner alerted police that "he was missing a snake." Police issued a mugshot of the "very dangerous" two-metre-long (6.5-foot) coiled green mamba, warning people to stay indoors and under no circumstances to attempt to ensnare the snake. The snake's fate has been national news in the Netherlands -- despite media competition from a historic election -- with herpetologists regularly quoted on TV and in papers. Authorities deployed sniffer dogs and snake experts in vain for days... Читать дальше...

Prolonged ceasefire would be seen as 'net defeat' for Israel, researcher says

France24.com (en)

As the truce deal between Israel and Hamas started Friday, some wonder whether the temporary ceasefire could be prolonged, leading to an end of the war in Gaza. This, however, seems unlikely, according to the director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy & International Affairs Joseph Bahout. Israel has always focused on eliminating Hamas in its war discourse and "if it stops there ... it would be a net defeat [from Israel's viewpoint] and admittance that the Hamas operation was a political success," Bahout said.

Dyche 'shocked' by Everton's 10-point deduction

France24.com (en)

Dyche's club were hit with the bombshell sanction last week after they exceeded losses permitted under the Premier League's financial rules. Israel faces challenging 'conundrum' over Gaza war rhetoric, specialists say

France24.com (en)

"Israel's put itself in an impossible situation by saying Hamas must be destroyed," Hussein Ibish, Senior Resident Scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute said, noting the mounting internal pressure on the Israeli government as families of remaining hostages increasingly call for the release of more Palestinian prisoners in exchange for all Israeli hostages. "It's not really an achievable goal unless Israel wants to reoccupy Gaza for a prolonged period of time," Ibish said.
