John McCain says Obama is 'directly responsible' for Orlando attack

The Week

On Thursday, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) placed the blame for the Orlando nightclub massacre, which killed 49, squarely on President Obama's shoulders. In a conversation with reporters in the Senate hallway, McCain suggested that Obama was "directly responsible" for the terror attack because his failures in the Middle East — including pulling troops from Iraq and not trying harder to intervene in Syria — had enabled the rise of the Islamic State. The Orlando gunman, Omar Mateen, allegedly pledged... Читать дальше...

An unexpected beneficiary of improved U.S.-Cuba relations? Ernest Hemingway.

The Week

It was at the Cuban estate Finca Vigía that some of the greatest American novels of the 20th century were written — For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Old Man and the Sea. But after the death of Ernest Hemingway in 1961 and the escalating tensions of the Cold War, U.S.-Cuban relations fizzled out and then were severed all together. Without being able to order valuable materials from the U.S., Hemingway's historic Havana estate fell into disrepair.

"He doesn't appear to be a Republican, he doesn't appear to want to learn about the issues," Armitage, who also served as an assistant secretary of defense under former President Ronald Reagan, said of Trump. "So I'm going to vote for Mrs. Clinton."

Donald Trump is reportedly thinking about launching his own TV network

The Week

Even if Donald Trump doesn't win the presidential election, there's a good chance we'll still be seeing a whole lot more of him on TV. Vanity Fair reported Thursday that the presumptive GOP nominee is eyeing the possibility of launching his very own media company — possibly a cable news network — after discovering just how powerful a hold he can have on the news cycle:

"We judge that ISIL is training and attempting to deploy operatives for further attacks," Brennan will tell the Senate Intelligence Committee, according to excerpts of his statement provided to CNN. "ISIL has a large cadre of Western fighters who could potentially serve as operatives for attacks in the West. And... Читать дальше...

The man who invented the AR-15 never imagined it would end up in civilians' hands

The Week

The family of the man who invented the AR-15 assault rifle has spoken out to say the weapon was never intended to be in civilians' hands. "Our father, Eugene Stoner, designed the AR-15 and subsequent M-16 as a military weapon to give our soldiers an advantage over the AK-47. He died long before any mass shootings occurred. But, we do think he would have been horrified and sickened as anyone, if not more by these events," the family told NBC News.

Donald Trump has his own family charity problems

The Week

The Clinton Foundation, the global charity set up by former President Bill Clinton, has caused some headaches for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, and Donald Trump says he will tell everyone about it in a major speech. But it turns out that several ethics and campaign law watchdogs are also calling for an investigation of Trump's family foundation, The Daily Beast reports, with groups including the Sunlight Foundation, Citizens for Responsibility in Ethics in Washington (CREW), the Campaign Legal Center... Oprah endorses Hillary Clinton: 'What this says is, there is no ceiling'

The Week

Oprah Winfrey officially announced her endorsement of Hillary Clinton for president on Entertainment Tonight Wednesday, and she couldn't say enough about how big Clinton's candidacy is for women. "Regardless of your politics, it's a seminal moment for women," Winfrey said of Clinton becoming the first woman poised to win a major party's nomination and, possibly, the presidency. "What this says is, there is no ceiling, that ceiling just went boom! It says anything is possible when you can be leader... Читать дальше...

The daily business briefing: June 16, 2016

The Week

1.

Federal Reserve policy makers left interest rates unchanged as they ended their two-day meeting on Wednesday. The decision was widely expected in the wake of May's disappointing jobs report. The Fed said it still expected to make two quarter-point increases to its benchmark short-term rate this year, although six of the 17 Fed policy makers — up from one in March — now anticipate just one increase this year. Fed officials said the slower pace of economic growth could slow the pace of hikes in coming years. Читать дальше...

John Kasich on endorsing Donald Trump: 'At this point, I just can't do it'

The Week

As much as Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) wants to support his party in the general election, he's having a hard time getting behind its presumptive nominee. In an interview on MSNBC's Morning Joe that aired Thursday, Kasich tried to reconcile his longstanding loyalty to the Republican Party with his aversion to Donald Trump. "There's this thing called Republican loyalty," Kasich said. "I've been a Republican all my life, how do you think I feel about this? I'm the Republican governor of Ohio. It's difficult."

During Orlando visit, Obama will fight paranoia with logic

The Week

President Obama will visit the site of the Orlando nightclub shooting on Thursday to meet with families of the victims as well as people who survived the attack. The visit comes as Obama continues to try to deflect criticism that he has not done enough to fight ISIS and that he does not understand the full threat of radical Islam. Clinton supporters' newest delusion about Bernie Sanders

The Week

The Democratic primary is over, and Hillary Clinton won by a comfortable margin. Given the overwhelming handicap that Bernie Sanders faced, from big money donors to simple name recognition, it is staggering that the contest was even remotely close. But now that it's finished and the bitter and rather pointless fighting between Clinton and Sanders supporters is finally dying down, it's worth taking a step back to consider what this primary was all about — in particular, what Sanders' candidacy represents.
