Hungary's government declines offer to meet US senators seeking approval for Sweden's NATO bid

Times Union

A bipartisan delegation of U.S. senators has made an official visit to Hungary’s capital to call on the nationalist government to immediately approve Sweden’s request to join NATO. Hungary is the only one of NATO’s 31 members not to have ratified Sweden’s bid. The visiting senators announced they plan to submit a joint resolution to Congress condemning alleged democratic backsliding in Hungary and urging the government there to act on Sweden’s NATO membership. Making up the delegation in Budapest on Sunday were Sen. Читать дальше...

'Bob Marley: One Love' stirs up $27.7M weekend, 'Madame Web' flops

Times Union

Paramount Pictures’ Bob Marley biopic “Bob Marley: One Love” outperformed expectations to debut at No. 1 at the box office with a $27.7 million opening weekend. But Sony’s “Madame Web” flopped with one of the lowest debuts for a movie centered on a Marvel character. Both films launched in theaters on Tuesday to rope in Valentine’s Day moviegoers. But on a weekend that was once expected to go to “Madame Web,” “One Love” emerged as the much-preferred option in theaters, despite largely poor reviews. Читать дальше...

Trump VP contender Tim Scott doesn't want to talk about vice president's role in certifying election

Times Union

Sen. Tim Scott is treading carefully on questions about whether he would have certified the 2020 election had he been vice president at that time. The South Carolina Republican is seen as a potential running mate if Donald Trump becomes the Republican presidential nominee. On Jan. 6, 2021, about two months after Trump lost the White House, then-Vice President Mike Pence defied his boss and refused to use his largely ceremonial role in overseeing the election certification process to block Democrat Joe Biden’s victory. German labor union calls on Lufthansa ground staff to strike at 7 airports on Tuesday

Times Union

A labor union in Germany has called on ground staff for Lufthansa to walk off the job at seven airports on Tuesday following a similar strike earlier this month. The Ver.di union said Sunday that the one-day strike will affect the airports in Frankfurt and Munich, Lufthansa’s two main hubs, and in Berlin, Duesseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne-Bonn and Stuttgart. It is set to run from 4 a.m. Tuesday to 7:10 a.m. Wednesday. A 27-hour strike at five of the same airports that started Feb. 7 prompted the airline to cancel hundreds of flights. Читать дальше...

GOP candidates elevate anti-transgender messaging as a rallying call to Christian conservatives

Times Union

Donald Trump has mocked transgender people during his campaign, using language about gender identity that LGBTQ+ advocates say is wrong and harmful. Other GOP presidential candidates have attacked transgender participation in athletics and proposed nationwide bans on affirming care for transgender minors. Political observers say the issue has become a more potent rally call for Christian conservatives than abortion rights or same-sex marriage. This shift worries advocates who note transgender people... Читать дальше...

Times Union

Japanese Americans who were incarcerated on U.S. soil during World War II are being commemorated at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. A year after Jimmy Carter's entered hospice care, advocates hope his endurance drives awareness

Times Union

Since Jimmy Carter entered hospice care at his home in south Georgia one year ago, the former U.S. president has celebrated his 99th birthday, enjoyed tributes to his legacy and lost his wife of 77 years. Rosalynn Carter died in November, about six months after the Carter family disclosed her dementia diagnosis. She lived only a few days under hospice supervision, with her frail husband at her bedside. Experts on end-of-life care say the Carters’ different paths show the range of an oft-misunderstood service. Читать дальше...

Houston megachurch to have service of 'healing and restoration' a week after deadly shooting

Times Union

A Houston megachurch is set to have a special service a week after a woman opened fire in one of its hallways before being gunned down by security officers. Lakewood Church, run by celebrity pastor Joel Osteen, has not had services since the Feb. 11 shooting that sent worshippers scrambling for safety. Osteen said Sunday's service was being held to celebrate a “time of healing and restoration.” Police say Genesse Moreno entered the church with her 7-year-old son and opened fire. Two people were injured... Читать дальше...

Southern Illinois home of Paul Powell, the 'Shoebox Scandal' politician, could soon be sold

Times Union

The birthplace of one of Illinois' more notorious politicians might soon be up for sale. Paul Powell was the Illinois secretary of state whose death in 1970 led to the discovery of $800,000 in cash in his Springfield hotel room and Capitol office. Powell was from the southern Illinois town of Vienna. Before his death he established a $250,000 trust to maintain his birthplace for use by the Johnson County Genealogical and Historical Society. Gary Hacker is a society board member. He tells The Associated... Читать дальше...

California is forging ahead with food waste recycling. But is it too much, too fast?

Times Union

Two years after California launched an effort to keep organic waste out of landfills, the state is behind on getting food recycling programs up and running. CalRecycle’s director Rachel Machi Wagoner says about three-quarters of communities are currently collecting organic waste from homes. It’s hard to change people’s longstanding behavior quickly and some communities have faced delays setting up organic waste hauling contracts due to the pandemic. Meanwhile, some of those that ramped up collection now have more compost than they can use. Читать дальше...

Times Union

Former President Donald Trump railed against the judge who slapped him with a $355 million fine in his New York civil fraud trial. The Republican front-runner also went after the long list of prosecutors with cases against him as he campaigned in Michigan Saturday night while facing penalties that, with interest, could exceed half-a-billion dollars. Trump was making his pitch in a state expected to be critical in November as he pivots toward a likely general election rematch against President Joe Biden. Читать дальше...

Here's a look inside Donald Trump's $355 million civil fraud verdict as an appeals fight looms

Times Union

On the witness stand last year, Donald Trump proclaimed: “I have a lot of cash.” After Friday’s eye-popping penalty in his New York civil fraud trial, he’s going to need it — and maybe more. A judge ordered the former president to fork over $355 million, plus interest. The judge found he lied for years about his wealth on financial statements he used to secure loans and make deals as he built the real estate empire that vaulted him to fame and the presidency. The financial penalty could put the Republican... Читать дальше...

As he closes in on the Republican presidential nomination, former President Donald Trump made a highly unusual stop. On Saturday he hawked new Trump-branded sneakers at “Sneaker Con,” a gathering that bills itself as the “The Greatest Sneaker Show On Earth.” Trump was met with loud boos as well as cheers at the Philadelphia Convention Center Saturday as he introduced what he called the first official Trump footwear.
