A bipartisan delegation of U.S. senators has made an official visit to Hungary’s capital to call on the nationalist government to immediately approve Sweden’s request to join NATO. Hungary is the only one of NATO’s 31 members not to have ratified Sweden’s bid. The visiting senators announced they plan to submit a joint resolution to Congress condemning alleged democratic backsliding in Hungary and urging the government there to act on Sweden’s NATO membership. Two police officers and one first responder were shot and killed early Sunday while responding to a domestic abuse call in a Minneapolis suburb. That is according to an association that represents police officers. The deaths of the two Burnsville police officers and the first responder were confirmed by the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association. Police, fire and city officials, including the mayor, didn’t immediately return phone or email messages from The Associated Press seeking comment.

A labor union in Germany has called on ground staff for Lufthansa to walk off the job at seven airports on Tuesday following a similar strike earlier this month. The Ver.di union said Sunday that the one-day strike will affect the airports in Frankfurt and Munich, Lufthansa’s two main hubs, and in Berlin, Duesseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne-Bonn and Stuttgart. Japanese Americans who were incarcerated on U.S. soil during World War II are being commemorated at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. A massive book, called the Ireichō, lists the names of the more than 125,000 people who were detained in the camps nationwide. It will be on display at the museum until Dec. 1. Since Jimmy Carter entered hospice care at his home in south Georgia one year ago, the former U.S. president has celebrated his 99th birthday, enjoyed tributes to his legacy and lost his wife of 77 years. A Houston megachurch is set to have a special service a week after a woman opened fire in one of its hallways before being gunned down by security officers. The birthplace of one of Illinois' more notorious politicians might soon be up for sale. Paul Powell was the Illinois secretary of state whose death in 1970 led to the discovery of $800,000 in cash in his Springfield hotel room and Capitol office. Powell was from the southern Illinois town of Vienna. Before his death he established a $250,000 trust to maintain his birthplace for use by the Johnson County Genealogical and Historical Society. Two years after California launched an effort to keep organic waste out of landfills, the state is behind on getting food recycling programs up and running. CalRecycle’s director Rachel Machi Wagoner says about three-quarters of communities are currently collecting organic waste from homes. It’s hard to change people’s longstanding behavior quickly and some communities have faced delays setting up organic waste hauling contracts due to the pandemic.
