Bernie Sanders shot back at the House Democrats who booed him at a meeting

The Week

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said the reason that House Democrats booed him at a closed-door meeting Wednesday morning boils down to the fact that they simply "look at the world a little bit differently." Though Sanders said that reports of the incident were somewhat exaggerated, he did acknowledge "differences of opinion." "What I'm trying to do and the reason I ran for president is to help transform this country. To deal with income and wealth inequality, a declining middle class, the fact that... Читать дальше...

Both Joni Ernst and Bob Corker are backing away from being Trump's VP

The Week

Donald Trump's VP shortlist may have just gotten two names shorter. Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) told The Washington Post on Wednesday that he'd taken himself out of the running to be Trump's ticket-mate, saying that "there are people far more suited for being a candidate for vice president, and I think I'm far more suited for other types of things." Corker, who is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he'd already told Trump he wasn't comfortable with being vice president, a position he called a "highly political job... Donald Trump upped his fundraising by almost $50 million since the end of May

The Week

Donald Trump raised a total of $51 million in the last five weeks through the end of June, far surpassing his dismal $3.1 million total from May. Trump brought in more than $26 million for his own campaign through donations from more than 400,000 supporters, 94 percent of whom gave in increments of $200 or less, Politico reports. For the other $25 million, the campaign teamed up with the Republican National Committee. Trump also gave the campaign $3.8 million out of his own pocket.

Gretchen Carlson files sexual harassment lawsuit against Fox News CEO Roger Ailes

The Week

Former Fox News host Gretchen Carlson has filed a sexual harassment and retaliation lawsuit against the network's chairman and CEO, Roger Ailes. Carlson, a one-time co-host of Fox & Friends, alleges that she was terminated by the network on June 23 — the day her contract expired — because "she refused to sleep with [Ailes] and reported disparaging treatment in the newsroom," a release shared by CNN's Tom Kludt said.

Tony Blair defends Iraq war decision after damning report

The Week

Following the release of a damning report by Britain's Iraq Inquiry Committee, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair at a press conference Wednesday accepted full responsibility for his decision to join the U.S.-led invasion into Iraq. Though Blair said that he feels "more sorrow, regret, and apology than you may ever know" for the decision, he disagreed with some of the criticism leveled against him in the report, including that he failed to prepare adequately and to ask enough questions.

Watch Megyn Kelly's brutal rundown of every misleading comment Hillary Clinton made about her emails

The Week

Megyn Kelly didn't even have to say a word to issue a scathing takedown of Hillary Clinton's claims regarding her private email server. Instead, the Fox News anchor simply let the footage play on The Kelly File Tuesday night, resulting in a damning juxtaposition between what Clinton had to say about her email use while she was secretary of state and what FBI Director James Comey said was found over the course of the bureau's in-depth investigation.

Report tears into Tony Blair for Iraq war decisions

The Week

A report by Britain's Iraq Inquiry Committee released Wednesday concluded that former Prime Minister Tony Blair joined the U.S.-led invasion without preparing adequately or gaining sufficient intelligence. The report, which took seven years to complete and spans 12 volumes, found that Blair joined without fully exploring peaceable options, without a satisfactory "legal basis for military action," and with an inflated sense of influence over President George W. Bush's decisions. "We do not agree that hindsight is required," John Chilcot... Читать дальше...

The daily business briefing: July 6, 2016

The Week

1.

Oil prices fell by nearly five percent on Tuesday due to continuing fear that Britain's looming departure from the European Union will hurt the world economy, decreasing energy demand in the middle of a global oil glut. Brent futures fell by $2.14, or 4.3 percent, to $47.96 a barrel, while U.S. crude dropped by $2.39, or 4.9 percent, to $46.60. The news of an increase in stocks at an Oklahoma supply hub for oil futures also contributed to downward price pressure.

The Week

1.

FBI Director James Comey announced Tuesday that the agency's investigation had found no grounds for criminal charges against Hillary Clinton related to her use of a private email server while serving as secretary of state. Comey said that despite sometimes "extremely careless" handling of sensitive information, there was no evidence of "intentional misconduct." Republicans said Comey's sharp criticism showed Clinton was unfit to be president. Presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald... Читать дальше...

Protests erupt over fatal police shooting in Baton Rouge

The Week

Protests broke out in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after footage surfaced of two white police officers pinning down a black man and fatally shooting him outside a convenience store Tuesday. The circulating cell phone video shot by a bystander shows Alton Sterling, 37, being tackled to the ground, and then held down as one of the officers appears to hold a gun above Sterling's chest. An autopsy revealed that Sterling died of multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and the back.

I watched the Independence Day sequel on Independence Day. Here's what I learned.

The Week

It's instructive to watch movies on the dates that matter to them. I watched the Back to the Future trilogy on Oct. 21, 2015, and goggled at how long Donald Trump has haunted our dreams for America's future. Now that America is teetering on that darkest of dark timelines, I decided to shove aside my reservations and celebrate Independence Day by testing my American mettle. On the 240th anniversary of our nation's birth, I lunched at McDonald's, drove to the biggest mall I could find, and watched Independence Day: Resurgence. Читать дальше...

Why Hillary Clinton needs to be twice as good

The Week

"You have to be twice as good to succeed." It's something countless African-American parents have told their children, as the TV show Scandal brought to white people's attention (if they didn't hear it somewhere else, perhaps from the Condoleezza Rice biography Twice As Good). The system is designed for you to fail, and people are rooting for you to fail and doing their darndest to make sure you do. Just being good isn't nearly enough.

Is Hillary Clinton too big to indict?

The Week

Hillary Clinton is off the hook.

On Tuesday, FBI Director James Comey announced the conclusion of the investigation into the secret email server used by Clinton while she was secretary of state. Clinton repeatedly lied to the public about its use, especially when it came to the transmission of classified information. She was "extremely careless," in Comey's words. And yet, the FBI has chosen not to press charges.

Clinton sent or received more than 100 emails containing material classified... Читать дальше...

The bucolic beauty of the middle of nowhere

The Week
