Donald Trump's VP shortlist may have just gotten two names shorter. Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) told The Washington Post on Wednesday that he'd taken himself out of the running to be Trump's ticket-mate, saying that "there are people far more suited for being a candidate for vice president, and I think I'm far more suited for other types of things." Donald Trump raised a total of $51 million in the last five weeks through the end of June, far surpassing his dismal $3.1 million total from May. Trump brought in more than $26 million for his own campaign through donations from more than 400,000 supporters, 94 percent of whom gave in increments of $200 or less, Politico reports. For the other $25 million, the campaign teamed up with the Republican National Committee. Trump also gave the campaign $3.8 million out of his own pocket.

Former Fox News host Gretchen Carlson has filed a sexual harassment and retaliation lawsuit against the network's chairman and CEO, Roger Ailes. Carlson, a one-time co-host of Fox & Friends, alleges that she was terminated by the network on June 23 — the day her contract expired — because "she refused to sleep with [Ailes] and reported disparaging treatment in the newsroom," a release shared by CNN's Tom Kludt said.

President Obama announced Wednesday that he will slow the drawdown of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, keeping about 8,400 troops there instead of reducing the number to 5,500 by the end of 2016, as was originally planned. There are currently 9,800 U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

A report by Britain's Iraq Inquiry Committee released Wednesday concluded that former Prime Minister Tony Blair joined the U.S.-led invasion without preparing adequately or gaining sufficient intelligence. The report, which took seven years to complete and spans 12 volumes, found that Blair joined without fully exploring peaceable options, without a satisfactory "legal basis for military action," and with an inflated sense of influence over President George W. Oil prices fell by nearly five percent on Tuesday due to continuing fear that Britain's looming departure from the European Union will hurt the world economy, decreasing energy demand in the middle of a global oil glut. Brent futures fell by $2.14, or 4.3 percent, to $47.96 a barrel, while U.S. crude dropped by $2.39, or 4.9 percent, to $46.60. The news of an increase in stocks at an Oklahoma supply hub for oil futures also contributed to downward price pressure.

Protests broke out in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after footage surfaced of two white police officers pinning down a black man and fatally shooting him outside a convenience store Tuesday. The circulating cell phone video shot by a bystander shows Alton Sterling, 37, being tackled to the ground, and then held down as one of the officers appears to hold a gun above Sterling's chest. An autopsy revealed that Sterling died of multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and the back.

On Wednesday, a Spanish court sentenced Lionel Messi to 21 months in prison for three counts of tax fraud, The Associated Press reports. The famous Argentina and Barcelona soccer player is accused alongside his father, Jorge Horacio Messi, of avoiding taxation on more than 4 million euros between 2007 and 2009 by setting up tax havens in Uruguay and Belize.

Hillary Clinton's escape from any indictment for her email scandal — from any cost or consequence whatsoever — is a daunting reminder of the inexorable callousness with which those who should be our models of public spirit instead continue to gin up endless impotent rage among regular people.

"You have to be twice as good to succeed." It's something countless African-American parents have told their children, as the TV show Scandal brought to white people's attention (if they didn't hear it somewhere else, perhaps from the Condoleezza Rice biography Twice As Good). The system is designed for you to fail, and people are rooting for you to fail and doing their darndest to make sure you do. Just being good isn't nearly enough.
