Who actually watches political conventions?

The Week

It apparently takes people over half a century before they begin to care about the Democratic or Republican National Conventions — or at least about watching them on TV. Nielsen numbers show that for night one of the Republican Convention this year, 14 million of the 23 million people who tuned in were older than the age of 55:

NBA reportedly yanks All-Star Game from Charlotte over bathroom law

The Week

The NBA has decided to move its 2017 All-Star Game out of Charlotte, North Carolina, after the state neglected to change a controversial law requiring transgender individuals use the bathroom that corresponds to their biological sex, The Vertical reports. Earlier this year, North Carolina passed its controversial House Bill 2, which prompted league commissioner Adam Silver in April to threaten to relocate the game after calling the law "problematic."

Clinton's veepstakes heats up ahead of rumored Friday announcement

The Week

Amid the chaos of this week's Republican National Convention, presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has been quietly mulling over her running mate candidates. At the top of the shortlist are reportedly Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, both of whom would bring extensive political experience to the ticket; both men also hail from important states, as Vilsack was a two-term governor of Iowa before joining the Obama administration.

The RNC's communications director basically just called Ted Cruz an 'a--hole' on national TV

The Week

Sean Spicer, the communications director for the Republican National Committee, thinks Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) communicated the correct sentiment when King called Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) an "a--hole" after Cruz refused to endorse Donald Trump in his Wednesday address at the GOP convention. In fact, Spicer admitted Thursday on CNN, he would "probably use the same verbiage."

Brazilian police arrest 10 over alleged Rio Olympics terrorist plot

The Week

Brazilian police have arrested 10 suspects and are seeking two more over an alleged plot to launch a terrorist attack at next month's Rio Olympics Games. Brazil's Justice Ministry said Thursday that the Brazilian Islamist group plotting the attacks was "baptized" by the Islamic State, and reportedly had both promoted ISIS propaganda online and tried to contact the terrorist group over the internet. The suspects, all Brazilian nationals, were allegedly discussing using weapons and guerrilla tactics for the attack. Читать дальше...

Michael Moore predicts a Trump win: 'I'm sorry'

The Week

As much as he seemingly hated to admit it, filmmaker Michael Moore is pretty certain the next president of the United States of America is going to be Donald Trump. Moore broke the light mood of Wednesday's live episode of Real Time with Bill Maher to make what he knew was a downer of a point about the election they'd been cracking jokes about. "I'm sorry to have to be the buzzkill here so early on, but I think Trump is going to win," Moore said, eliciting boos from the audience.

The lunatic brilliance of Bojack Horseman

The Week

Bojack Horseman — Netflix's wildly bleak cartoon about a washed up sitcom-star who happens to be a horse — is back for a third season of winks and angst. On Friday, 12 new episodes will drop on Netflix. The new season celebrates Bojack's hardscrabble climb back to stardom (via the biopic Secretariat) by making its iconically flat opening credits just a little bit glossier. Its shadows are deeper, and so are some of the show's more amusingly stilted lines, as when game show host Mr. Peanutbutter (a sunny yellow lab played by Paul F. Читать дальше...

Cruz tells Texas delegation his refusal to endorse Trump was 'personal'

The Week

Speaking at a breakfast for the Texas delegation Thursday morning, Sen. Ted Cruz explained that his refusal to endorse Republican nominee Donald Trump in his convention speech Wednesday was "personal." Cruz said Trump knew he was not going to offer an endorsement — something Trump himself confirmed — and told the home-state crowd that he could not support someone who, during the primary campaign, was "maligning my wife and maligning my father":

Gary Johnson says Ted Cruz's Trump snub is really an endorsement of Gary Johnson

The Week

Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson is pretty sure that when Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) told the Republican National Convention to "vote your conscience," what he meant to say was "vote for Gary Johnson." In an interview with CNN's Chris Cuomo on Thursday morning, the former New Mexico governor clarified just how big of an opportunity he thinks Cruz's refusal to endorse Trump might have created for him.

Turkey declares 3-month state of emergency, suspends Convention on Human Rights

The Week

After declaring a three-month state of emergency late Wednesday, Turkey announced Thursday that it would also be temporarily suspending the European Convention on Human Rights, an international treaty aimed at protecting human rights and freedoms. The announcement followed Friday's failed coup, which resulted in the deaths of more than 250 people and has since spurred the suspension of thousands of government workers. Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said the country was following... Читать дальше...

The daily business briefing: July 21, 2016

The Week

1.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures edged down on Thursday, signaling a lower open for the stock index after nine days of gains. Dow futures dropped by 0.2 percent. S&P 500 futures fell by 0.2 percent, too, while Nasdaq-100 futures fell by 0.1 percent. The Dow and the S&P 500 both advanced to fresh highs on Wednesday with modest gains. The pause in the rally came as investors awaited a flurry of economic news, earnings reports, and as the European Central Bank, as expected,... Читать дальше...

10 things you need to know today: July 21, 2016

The Week

1.

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence accepted the Republican nomination for vice president on Wednesday night, praising the party's presidential candidate, Donald Trump, as a man who "never quits, never backs down, a fighter, a winner." He said the billionaire businessman is "a doer in a game usually reserved for talkers." The forceful speech came after Sen. Ted Cruz, Trump's strongest primary-season rival, upstaged the rest of the night's speakers by telling conservatives to "vote your conscience" in support of conservative policies... Читать дальше...

Police shoot unarmed black caretaker of autistic man

The Week

A black man was shot and wounded by police in Miami, Florida, on Monday as he cared for his autistic patient. Charles Kinsey, a therapist for people with disabilities, was attempting to get the patient back to the assisted living facility he'd wandered away from when police arrived on the scene following reports of a man with a gun.

How the GOP could have stopped Donald Trump — in 2009

The Week

There was nothing inevitable about Donald Trump's blitzkrieg to the Republican presidential nomination. The fast track from his dictator kitsch-decorated Trump Tower penthouse to the podium tonight in Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena had many potential off-ramps. What if Trump's GOP rivals had pounced from the start? What if Jeb Bush had spent millions attacking Trump instead of Marco Rubio? Perhaps the indeterminately wealthy businessman wouldn't even have run if all the media "haters" had shown him more respect. Читать дальше...

Why Ted Cruz's huge convention gamble will pay off in the end

The Week

Ted Cruz put his name into the history books last night.

He took a major political risk in refusing to endorse Donald Trump in such a public fashion. By now, many other Trump-hating Republicans have reluctantly offered their unenthusiastic endorsements. But not Ted Cruz. He became the first runner-up in living memory not to endorse the candidate of his party.

Leading into his non-endorsement, Cruz said, "I want to see the principles our party believes prevail in November." He continued... Читать дальше...
