The Chinese government reportedly hacked the FDIC. Then the FDIC allegedly covered it up.

The Week

An internal report on the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has revealed that the key U.S. banking regulator may have been hacked by the Chinese government in 2010, 2011, and 2013. However, until a congressional report was released Wednesday, the breach largely flew under the radar, as the report alleges FDIC officials tried to cover up the hack.

Here's how the FBI Director Comey's speech affected Hillary Clinton in the polls

The Week

In the days since FBI Director James Comey called Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email server "extremely careless," the presumptive Democratic nominee's lead on Donald Trump has narrowed. Although the FBI recommended no charges be pressed against her, Clinton barely leads Trump in Iowa, earning 42 percent support to his 39 percent, an NBC/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll found. In Pennsylvania, Clinton has a slightly safer lead of 45 percent to 36 percent, the poll showed.

Clinton pushes unity in first speech after Sanders endorsement

The Week

Hillary Clinton offered a message of unity in her first speech since Bernie Sanders endorsed her on Tuesday, addressing supporters from the Old State House in Springfield, Illinois — notably, the place where Abraham Lincoln delivered his House Divided speech in 1858. However, her speech was not without the sober mention of police brutality and the tragic shooting of five Dallas officers last week. "Recent events have left people across America asking hard questions about whether we are still a house divided," she said. Читать дальше...

Theresa May becomes Britain's 76th prime minister

The Week

Shortly after officially accepting David Cameron's resignation as U.K. prime minister Wednesday, Queen Elizabeth II appointed Theresa May as Britain's new leader. May, previously the home secretary, won the race for leadership of the Conservative Party after her final rival, Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom, bowed out Monday.

This judge's ruling may stop police from conducting sweeping cell phone surveillance

The Week

Stingrays are portable devices known as "cell-site simulators" that pretend to be cell phone towers to collect location metadata on a mass scale from cell users in a given area. Their use by a number of state and federal law enforcement agencies is fraught with controversy on privacy and due process grounds (only a few states even require a warrant for stingray use), but police have so far encountered little legal push-back.

Marines notice attempted murder suspect after Pokemon Go glitches

The Week

"Attempted murder suspect" is not a Pokémon, but it's exactly what two Marine Corps veterans found while they were playing Pokémon Go in Los Angeles on Tuesday. The iPhone game, which encourages users to wander around their neighborhoods in search of diverse Pokemon, took Javier Soch, 26, and Seth Ortega, 24, to downtown Fullerton on what they thought was a regular Pokémon hunt.

Corey Lewandowski is getting paid by both Trump and CNN

The Week

While it may seem like Donald Trump's former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski has entirely moved on with his new gig as a CNN political contributor, it turns out Lewandowski hasn't yet severed all ties to his former boss. Turns out, Media Matters reports, Lewandowski is still getting severance pay from Trump's campaign — while he's simultaneously getting a check from CNN to comment on Trump's prospects in the presidential race.

White nationalists praise Trump for going 'full wink-wink-wink'

The Week

Neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups have praised the no-filter presumptive Republican nominee for making it acceptable to be outspoken about races they see as invasive or inferior. And although Donald Trump has said he "disavows" the support of such hate groups, many are now claiming that his use of images from white nationalist blogs on Twitter is a "full wink-wink-wink to his most aggressive supporters."

Watch David Cameron's poignant final speech as prime minister: 'I was the future once'

The Week

David Cameron's speech before parliament Wednesday — his last as Britain's prime minister — was packed with moments both poignant and funny. As Cameron, who was re-elected just last year, passed the baton off to his presumed successor, Home Secretary Theresa May, he offered words of encouragement to the next phase of leadership and expressed hope for all that politics can accomplish. "You can achieve a lot of things in politics. You can get a lot of things done," he said. "In the end, the public service... Читать дальше...

The Washington Post and New York Times just took Trump's side in his fight with Justice Ginsburg

The Week

Donald Trump has been criticized by opponents for having thin skin when it comes to receiving the kinds of insults he so readily doles out to others. But after Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said she "can't imagine what the country would be with Donald Trump as our president" and later doubled-down on the comments, claiming Trump was a "faker" with an "ego" and "no consistency," The Washington Post and The New York Times both did the unusual — they took Trump's side.

Americans throw out $160 billion worth of fruits and vegetables every year

The Week

America's quest for perfection is sending $160 billion worth of produce down the garbage chute every single year. A report by The Guardian Wednesday revealed that, thanks to both retailers' and consumers' demand for fruits and veggies sans blemishes, more than 60 million tons of food — food that farmers say is both "high-value and nutritious" — never makes it into Americans' mouths. Instead, it is left to rot in fields or warehouses, fed to livestock, or simply shipped off to landfills.

Hillary Clinton's swing state leads are seriously slipping

The Week

Hillary Clinton just lost her leads in two key battleground states, a poll by Quinnipiac University out Wednesday revealed. While Clinton led Donald Trump in Florida by 8 points just a month ago, she now lags behind the presumptive GOP nominee by 3 points. In Pennsylvania, a state which Politico noted hasn't voted for a Republican in the presidential election since 1988, Trump is ahead 43 percent to 41 percent. Clinton previously led there by 1 point.

Donald Trump expected to announce VP pick on Friday

The Week

Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump is reportedly going to unveil and appear with his running mate on Friday. On Tuesday evening, at a rally in Indiana with one of the potential candidates, Gov. Mike Pence (R), Trump teased the crowd: "I don't know if he's going to be your governor or your vice president. Who the hell knows." Two other widely discussed candidates, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, have also campaigned with Trump in recent weeks, and... Theresa May will become Britain's new prime minister today

The Week

On Wednesday, British Prime Minister David Cameron will tender his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II after a final round of sparring with the House of Commons, paving the way for Home Secretary Theresa May to take over by Wednesday evening. May, 59, won the race for leadership of the Conservative Party without a vote, after her final rival, Andrea Leadsom, bowed out on Monday. She will be Britain's second female prime minister, after Margaret Thatcher, also a Tory. Cameron has been prime minister since 2010... Читать дальше...

Could a populist revolt topple Paul Ryan?

The Week

Are voters about to kick Paul Ryan out of Congress?

It might seem crazy for a widely respected, newly installed speaker of the House of Representatives to be shown the door. But according to one recent poll, it just might happen.

This is still highly unlikely. But it's not impossible. And even more than Donald Trump's improbable victory in the GOP primaries, a Ryan loss would signal a fundamental shift in the ideological orientation of the Republican Party.

To be fair, the... Читать дальше...

The 45-year-old book that explains TV today

The Week

Read just about any analysis of the television industry in 2016 and you'll see a lot of worrying about a business model that may be unsustainable. There are too many shows. Audiences are too fragmented. Young people aren't watching TV. Stars cost too much, and don't guarantee success. And nobody can figure out whether Nielsen ratings even matter any more.

The last gasps of #NeverTrump

The Week

Now that Bernie Sanders has finally endorsed Hillary Clinton, the potential for fireworks at the Democratic National Convention is now limited to celebratory displays. Sanders won't challenge Clinton for control of the platform or use the media to demand more speaking slots on the stage. Sanders' legions of supporters will have no rallying point for their differences with the soon-to-be-official nominee; they will either quietly stew about the result, or find some heretofore untapped reserves...
