The Week contest: Brexit blues

The Week

This week's question: A poll has revealed that up to 1.2 million people who voted for Britain to leave the European Union now regret their decision, in light of the economic and political repercussions from the referendum. Please come up with a new psychological term that could be used to describe the feeling of guilt and remorse these Brits are now experiencing.

For those who have everything: A hugging machine

The Week

Ever dreamed of receiving hugs on demand? Meet the OrbisBox ($35,000), a squeeze machine made by Danish company Gloria Mundi Care and modeled after the hug machine dreamed up by author and professor Temple Grandin, reports Gizmag.com. Grandin, a high-functioning autistic, recommends its use for calming hypersensitive people. When you lie down in the box, fabric-covered foam panels press in gently from all sides. You can adjust the amount of pressure and get out of the machine at any point. Users... Читать дальше...

10 states just sued the federal government over Obama's transgender bathroom rules

The Week

On Friday, 10 states — Arkansas, Kansas, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Wyoming — filed a lawsuit against the federal government over its rule allowing transgender students in public schools to use the restroom that corresponds with their gender identity, rather than their biological gender. The lawsuit, filed in Nebraska's federal court, accuses the U.S. Education Department and the Justice Department of taking away local authority and bypassing the established process for changing a law. Why police robots shoot to kill

The Week

When police finally ended their standoff with Dallas shooting suspect Micah X. Johnson, they did it not with a gun, but with an explosive device. As Dallas Police Chief David Brown explained at a Friday morning press conference, authorities saw "no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a device on its extension for it to detonate where the suspect was." This tactic lessened officers' exposure to "grave danger," Brown explained.

Dallas suspect Micah X. Johnson was an enlisted Army Reserve soldier

The Week

The Army confirmed Friday that the Dallas shooting suspect killed in a standoff with police was a veteran. Micah X. Johnson, a 25-year-old living outside of Dallas, had served in the U.S. Army Reserve as a junior enlisted soldier and completed a tour in Afghanistan, The Associated Press reported. He was a "carpentry and masonry specialist," CNN reported, and though he likely got basic training on firearms it is "unclear whether he received more advanced training."

Attorney General Loretta Lynch to peaceful protesters: Your voice is important

The Week

On Friday, Attorney General Loretta Lynch said this last week has been one of "profound grief and heartbreaking loss" following two police-involved shootings of black men, and Thursday's sniper attacks on Dallas police that killed five officers. She addressed the sense of helplessness and fear gripping the country, but called on Americans to react not with violence, but with peaceful action. "We must continue working to build trust between communities and law enforcement," she said. "We must continue... Читать дальше...

Democratic congresswoman charged with fraud, theft of government funds

The Week

On Friday, Rep. Corrine Brown (D-Fla.) was charged with multiple counts of fraud, theft of government funds, and conspiracy, among other charges, following a federal investigation into her connection to a fraudulent education charity. The charity, One Door for Education Foundation Inc., was said to offer scholarships to underprivileged students, but investigators found that it had only given out $1,000 in scholarship money and was instead funneling funds to Brown and "her associates," The Associated Press reported. Former GOP congressman warns 'Black Lives Matter punks' that 'real America is coming after you'

The Week

Just hours after five police officers were shot and killed by snipers in Dallas, former Illinois Rep. Joe Walsh (R) took to Twitter to dole out blame. In a series of tweets — at least one of which has since been deleted — the conservative radio show host called out President Obama for opening "the door for anti-cop rhetoric and action," as well as "liberals" and "Black Lives Matter" for encouraging violence:

Donald Trump releases remarkably tactful statement after Dallas

The Week

Donald Trump's response to the Dallas shooting didn't include any self-congratulatory statements, the word "tremendous," or even an exclamation point. Instead, the presumptive GOP nominee released a statement on the shooting Thursday night in Dallas that killed five police officers that's so tactful it might make you do a double take:

Dallas shooting suspect said he 'wanted to kill white people'

The Week

Before one of the Dallas shooting suspects was killed during a standoff with police, he said he was "upset" about Black Lives Matter, "the recent police shootings," and "white people," Dallas Police Chief David Brown said at a Friday morning press conference. The suspect stated that he "wanted to kill white people, especially white officers," Brown said, and that he was not "affiliated with any groups" and "did this alone."

The U.S. economy added 287,000 jobs in June

The Week

The federal nonfarm payrolls report released today showed that U.S. employers added 287,000 jobs in June, far exceeding economists' expectations and suggesting the economy had rebounded after May's disappointing employment numbers. Economists had predicted an increase of 170,000 jobs, with the gains partly due to Verizon employees returning to work after being out on strike in May. The unemployment rate increased to 4.9 percent from 4.7 percent, because more Americans returned to the labor force to look for work. Читать дальше...

The Benghazification of Hillary Clinton's emails

The Week

Just as Obama-era Republicans have made George W. Bush look like a much more reasonable figure than he seemed when he was president, the rapid redeployment of the anti-Clinton scandal machine might cause one to reevaluate the relationship between Barack Obama and Republicans in Congress. While it's true that they've been relentlessly attacking the president since he first took office in 2009, it's now clear that while Republicans were waging an ideological, personal, and at times legal battle... How the West lost faith in globalism

The Week

Is globalism dying?

Plenty of analysts have begun posing such profound questions about globalism, an ideology that has dominated elite circles of the West at least since the end of the Cold War, in response to the improbable presidential candidacy of Donald Trump and the U.K. voting to take itself out of the European Union.

Is rising popular opposition to free markets and open borders a sign of a broader rejection of neoliberal economic policies, or of free-market capitalism in general, or even of "liberal politics" itself? Читать дальше...

The Night Of will turn your love of Serial against you

The Week

When it comes to murder and our justice system's shortcomings, we're a nation obsessed. Whether it's The Jinx, The People V. O.J. Simpson, Making a Murderer, or Serial, the only subject that engages us more than the story of a wrongful conviction is the story of a wrongful acquittal. HBO's latest limited series, The Night Of, taps into that mania for armchair sleuthing and turns it back on us.
