Analyst: Delivery of Artsakh territories as a result of Putin-Erdogan deal is incapable to ensure long-term implementation of Armenian interests
ArmInfo. The return of Artsakh territories as a result of the Putin-Erdogan deal is incapable to ensure the long-term realization of Armenian interests and peacekeeping , primarily because there is no guarantee of respect for our interests by other participants in such a deal. Such an opinion was expressed 6to ArmInfo by ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs of NKR, independent analyst Arman Melikyan.
On the eve of the meeting with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced discussion of other issues and the Karabakh problem at the meeting. Erdogan expressed the supposition that if the Russian colleague is concentrated on this issue, it "will be easily solved".
"Erdogan's offers on Artsakh can be accepted by Moscow only if they correspond to the deepening and strengthening of Russian influence in the region." In this light, Ankara's proposal seems most likely to open the border with Armenia in exchange for deploying Russian peacekeepers to the Artsakh territories handed over to Azerbaijan, "the analyst suggested.
According to his estimates, thus, Russia will expand its military presence in the district, Azerbaijan will get more than half of the territory of Artsakh without recognizing the right of self-determination of the Artsakh people, Armenia will get land routes to the West, and Turkey will have new transit opportunities to Azerbaijan through Armenia, along with a significant increase in its influence on the whole South Caucasus.
The analyst sees the problem in a temporary nature of acquisitions of the Armenian side against the backdrop of the strategic character of the long-term achievements of Turkey, Russia and Azerbaijan of a strategic nature. He estimates that Armenian acquisitions will entirely depend on the goodwill of Russians or Turks, and Turkey is also easily able to open the border with Armenia today and close it tomorrow. Similarly, the Russians under whose control the Armenian-Turkish border is located can act.
According to Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov, Vladimir Putin will meet with his Turkish colleague Recep Erdogan on November 13 in Sochi. The presidents will discuss bilateral cooperation, as well as the situation in Syria, in particular, the preparations for the congress of the peoples of Syria and the congress of the national dialogue.
