Officials with New Mexico’s largest electric utility say a proposed multibillion-dollar merger with a U.S. subsidiary of global energy giant Iberdrola has been scuttled. Under the proposal, Avangrid would have acquired PNM Resources and its two utilities — Public Service Co. of New Mexico and Texas New Mexico Power. The all-cash transaction was valued at more than $4.3 billion and would have opened the door for Iberdrola and Avangrid in a state where more wind and solar power could be generated and exported to larger markets. Indiana woman is rescued after passerby directs police to car crash site along little-used road

Police say a woman who was trapped in a car that crashed early on New Years Day was rescued after a passerby directed officers to the crash scene along a little-used northwest Indiana road. Police and emergency responders spent two hours searching unsuccessfully for the car after a woman called 911 early Monday and said she and another woman were trapped in a crashed car in Gary. Man found dead at Salt Lake City airport after climbing inside jet engine

A man has been found dead at Salt Lake City International Airport after police say he breached an emergency exit door and climbed inside a jet engine. Officers found a 30-year-old man unconscious inside an engine mounted to the wing of a commercial aircraft loaded with passengers on Monday night. The engine was not running at the time. A large passenger plane and a Japanese coast guard aircraft have collided on the runway at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport and burst into flames. Officials say five people aboard the coast guard plane were killed. All 379 people on the Japan Airlines flight got out safely. Price cuts boost Tesla 4Q sales, beating estimates as electric vehicle growth rate slows

Steep price cuts helped electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc. increase its fourth-quarter vehicle sales by almost 20% as EV sales growth slowed across the industry. The Austin, Texas, company said Tuesday that it sold 484,507 vehicles worldwide from October through December. That handily beat Wall Street estimates of 473,000 for the quarter. For the full year, Tesla said it sold just over 1.8 million vehicles, up 37.7% from 2022 numbers. The Cook County sheriff’s office says it’s one of the most unusual cases they’ve encountered because the person, who died in 2015, died with the name Seven. Thailand's Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin says his country and China will soon implement visa-free entry for each other’s citizens. Srettha said Tuesday that Chinese nationals will be granted visa-free entry on a permanent basis beginning March 1. Chinese visitors have been allowed visa-free entry since September last year, but the privilege was due to expire on Feb. 29. Officials say several people suffered minor injuries and service was disrupted when a train derailed and caught fire on New Year’s Day in the San Francisco Bay Area. Klee Benally, a Navajo man who advocated on behalf of Indigenous people and environmental causes, has died. His sister, Jeneda Benally, said her brother died Saturday at a Phoenix hospital at age 48. His cause of death was not disclosed. Klee Benally was among the most vocal opponents of a Flagstaff ski resort that more than a dozen tribes consider to be on sacred land.
