Cumbersome process and 'arbitrary' Israeli inspections slow aid delivery into Gaza, US senators say

Times Union

A cumbersome process of Israeli inspections and other hurdles are slowing the entry of aid into Gaza. That's according to two U.S. senators after a visit to Egypt's Rafah crossing into the besieged territory. Hundreds of trucks are lined up at Rafah, sometimes waiting weeks to go through the process. Sens. Chris Van Hollen and Jeff Merkley say Israeli inspections reject items for vague, seemingly “arbitrary" reasons. The senators say a warehouse at Rafah was full of material rejected by inspectors... Читать дальше...

Nearly 3,000 pages of Jeffrey Epstein documents released, but some questions remain unanswered

Times Union

Even after the release of thousands of pages of court records about Jeffrey Epstein in recent days, some questions about the millionaire pedophile remain unanswered. The documents have received a lot of attention, but they shed little new light on the financier’s habitual sexual abuse of underage girls. More than anything, the public is still fascinated with the possibility that some of the rich and powerful men in Epstein’s social circle were also involved in the abuse. So far, 191 of the approximately... Читать дальше...

On Jan. 6 many Republicans blamed Trump for the Capitol riot. Now they endorse his presidential bid

Times Union

Three years after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, many Republicans have endorsed Donald Trump's presidential bid. Many of the same Republicans in Congress had blamed Trump for the attack when it happened. The defeated Republican president, stoking lies over the election, had encouraged his supporters to come to Washington and “fight like hell” when Congress convened to certify Democrat Joe Biden’s victory. Biden, ahead of the anniversary of Jan. 6, says democracy remains threatened by Trump's extremism. Читать дальше...

Defense Secretary Austin has been hospitalized since Jan. 1, but the Pentagon kept the news quiet

Times Union

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has been hospitalized since Monday, due to complications following a minor elective medical procedure. That's according Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary. It was the department’s first acknowledgement that Austin had been admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The Pentagon’s failure to disclose Austin’s hospitalization is counter to normal practice with other senior U.S. and Cabinet officials, including the president. Ryder... Читать дальше...

Alaska Airlines CEO... Читать дальше...

Michigan Republicans set to vote on chair Karamo's removal as she promises not to accept result

Times Union

Michigan Republicans plan to discuss removing state party Chairwoman Kristina Karamo. Michigan GOP members have called for the vote to remove Karamo less than a year into her leadership because the party has been plagued by debt and infighting. Karamo has said a meeting set for Saturday is not official and she will not recognize the vote if removed. The situation could play out in court if Karamo is removed. Michigan is among several swing states where parties overtaken by far-right leadership have... Читать дальше...

Deaths from western Japan earthquakes surpass 100; rain and snow imperil already shaky ground

Times Union

Aftershocks are threatening to bury more homes and block roads crucial for relief shipments, as the death toll from the earthquakes that rattled Japan’s western coastline last week surpassed 100 people. Among the dead was a 5-year-old boy who had been recovering from injuries from Monday’s 7.6 magnitude earthquake. The risk of landslides was growing with rain and snow expected overnight and Sunday. More than 500 people were injured. The temblors left roofs sitting haplessly on roads, with everything beneath them crushed flat. Читать дальше...

A push to expand Medicaid has Kansas governor embracing politics and cutting against her brand

Times Union

Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly is more aggressive and openly political in pushing to expand Medicaid in Kansas as the Republican-controlled Legislature prepares to open its annual session. Lawmakers are scheduled to convene Monday and GOP leaders have shown no interest publicly in expanding Medicaid to cover another 150,000 people. But Kelly’s new approach includes a promise to hit expansion-opposing Republicans hard later this year during races for legislative seats. She says in a recent interview... Читать дальше...

To plead or not to plead? That is the question for hundreds of Capitol riot defendants

Times Union

Hundreds of people charged with storming the U.S. Capitol three years ago have had a powerful incentive to plead guilty rather than go to trial. An Associated Press review of over 1,200 cases arising from the Jan. 6, 2021, attack found that the average prison sentence for a Capitol riot defendant convicted of a felony after a trial is roughly four years and three months. That's roughly two years longer than the average sentence for those who pleaded guilty to a felony. Defendants who plead guilty... Читать дальше...

New Mexico legislators back slower, sustained growth in government programs with budget plan

Times Union

Leading New Mexico lawmakers are recommending a 5.9% increase in general fund spending for the coming fiscal year amid a windfall in oil-related income. Announcing the proposal Friday, legislators are sounding a cautionary note on the future of the state’s petroleum bonanza with plans to set aside more money in savings and investment accounts. The proposal from a lead budget writing committee to the Democratic-led Legislature would increase general fund spending by $566 million for the fiscal year running from July 2024 to June 2025. Boeing still hasn't fixed this problem on Max jets, so it's asking for an exemption to safety rules

Times Union

Boeing wants an exemption from federal safety standards for an anti-icing system on its new, smaller version of the 737 Max airliner. Without a permanent fix, pilots of current Max jets are being told to limit use of an anti-icing system in dry but cold weather. Otherwise, inlets around the engines could overheat and break off and possibly strike airplane windows. Some pilots say it's not safe to depend on always remembering to limit use of the anti-ice system. Boeing said Friday that it is “developing... Читать дальше...
