Sixteen-year-old John Hittos bested 64 other teenage boys in Tarpon Springs on Saturday and retrieved the cross from chilly water. The winner is believed to have a year of blessings ahead. The emergency landing of a Boeing 737 Max jetliner with a gaping hole in its side is renewing safety concerns about the planes and creating new headaches for Boeing. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has been hospitalized since Monday, due to complications following a minor elective medical procedure. That's according Air Force Maj. Gen. Alaska Airlines grounded all of its Boeing 737-9 aircraft, hours after a window and piece of fuselage on one such plane blew out in midair and forced an emergency landing in Portland, Oregon. The incident occurred shortly after takeoff Friday and the gaping hole caused the cabin to depressurize. Aftershocks are threatening to bury more homes and block roads crucial for relief shipments, as the death toll from the earthquakes that rattled Japan’s western coastline last week surpassed 100 people. Leading New Mexico lawmakers are recommending a 5.9% increase in general fund spending for the coming fiscal year amid a windfall in oil-related income. Announcing the proposal Friday, legislators are sounding a cautionary note on the future of the state’s petroleum bonanza with plans to set aside more money in savings and investment accounts. Boeing wants an exemption from federal safety standards for an anti-icing system on its new, smaller version of the 737 Max airliner. Without a permanent fix, pilots of current Max jets are being told to limit use of an anti-icing system in dry but cold weather. Otherwise, inlets around the engines could overheat and break off and possibly strike airplane windows. Health officials say at least two dozen people in 14 states were sickened by salmonella poisoning tied to recalled meat snack trays sold at some Sam’s Club stores. Five people were hospitalized. Fratelli Beretta USA is a New Jersey meat processing company that has recalled more than 11,000 pounds of Busseto Foods brand ready-to-eat charcuterie meat products because they may be tainted with salmonella. The meat trays are labeled “Bussetto Food Charcuterie Sampler Prosciutto, Sweet Soppressata and Dry Copa" and have a best-by date of April 27.

A former police officer who defended the U.S. Capitol against rioters on Jan. 6 has announced he is running for Congress in Maryland.
