Alabama is preparing to attempt the nation’s first execution using nitrogen gas. Kenneth Eugene Smith, 58, is scheduled to be put to death Thursday by nitrogen hypoxia. The state plans to use a respirator face mask to replace Smith's breathing air with pure nitrogen, depriving him of the oxygen needed to stay alive. The state says the new method will “cause unconsciousness within seconds, and cause death within minutes.” Lawyers for Smith have argued the new method violates the ban on cruel and unusual punishment. Libya’s state-owned oil company says production has resumed at the country’s largest oilfield, ending a more than two-week hiatus after protesters blocked the facility over fuel shortages. The National Oil Corp. said in a terse statement it lifted the force majeure at the Sharara oil field in the country’s south on Sunday and resumed full production. A Texas man has pleaded guilty to kidnapping a 13-year-old girl who was rescued in California last year when a passerby saw her hold up a “Help Me” sign in a parked car. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Central District of California says 62-year-old Steven Robert Sablan of Cleburne admitted in a plea agreement that he sexually assaulted the victim while driving her from Texas to California.
